  • Cedar Point has officially unveiled the reimagining of the park's Top Thrill Dragster, coming in the form of Top Thrill 2! Gone is the original hydraulic launch and in its place is a new launch powered by Linear Synchronous Motors (LSMs). The ride will feature three launches, two forward and one backward, as well as a new 420 feet tall vertical spike! This will make the coaster the world's tallest and fastest triple launch strata coaster as well as the world's only dual-tower strata coaster! And yes, the ride will be built by Zamperla! Comment below what you think of this mega addition!

      I worked there back in 2006 and MUCH of the capacity and RPH depends on the loading/unloading crew. Operating a ride like this even on the old dragster requires speed of the crew and efficiency they can't be on the platform lollygagging talking amongst themselves and slow dragging to get everyone secure in safely and dispatch the ride. As a coaster fan, I dig it. It won't have the same mind-blowing launch but between the rollback, the backwards launch and the spike there's a bit more to the ride. I'm glad in a way that the spike is straight, as the way down from the top hat is already twisted.
    Not that any of this matters. Success will be measured not by how good the coaster fans will think it is compared to the orginal, but by how much uptime it has, how safe and reliable it is, and if it can run at the capacity that Cedar Point needs. Zamperla coasters so far hanven't been great (in fact I struggle to think of one I'd even call "good") but they seem to run well enough in that regard. It helps that all new track Zamperla has to put in is straight as a ruler, Intamin has done the work for them when it comes to the tricky bits. The wildcard is the new trains. They look like plastic toys. I hope those are sturdier than they look.

      I think it comes down to the park it’s at and how it was hyped. Cedar point is known for it’s innovative rides (mxl200, millennium force, ttd), so when they hype up this ride by saying “smoke the competition,” many instantly thought a height record was going to be beaten. Even news outlets were speculating that, so when it was announced and all it was was a vertical spike that was already known about by most, it became a little disappointing.

    I hope Cedar Point implements some sort of virtual queing system for this, otherwise a physical line could very well be like 3 or 4 hours long due to the ridiculously low rider capacity.

    • @KingdaToro
      @KingdaToro 11 месяцев назад

      The capacity should be fine. The launch sequence takes 45 seconds until the train crests the tophat, so if you assume 15 seconds to switch the track, bring the next train on, and start its launch sequence, that's one train per minute. 60 trains per hour x 20 seats per train = 1200 riders per hour. That's actually about the same as Millennium Force.

    Let's figure out the capacity!
    The critical thing to consider here is when the switch track can move into the position that allows a train to move from the station to the launch track. The earliest possible time is when the train passes it during the second launch, at about 1:04 in the video. But this is potentially unsafe as the train could still potentially roll back after the second launch. So, the more likely point it'll be able to move is when the train crests the tophat, at 1:13. The launch sequence begins at 0:29, so the launch sequence takes 44 seconds up until the point where the switch track can move. Let's assume 15 seconds for the switch track to move and the next train to move into position and begin its launch sequence. That means a 1 minute interval between trains. With a 20-person train, that works out to 60 dispatches an hour, or 1200 riders per hour. Actually not bad. It seems like the station itself may wind up being the limiting factor, as consistently dispatching trains at 1 minute intervals isn't easy. Hopefully it will at least have a separate unloading station.

    • @ragzillaz
      @ragzillaz Год назад

      60 second dispatch on the trains may be possible due to the Lightning car restraint design. Separate load/unload can't hurt, but I'm not sure it's strictly necessary, more beneficial could be a hold section between load/unload and the switch. But there's no evidence of either in this video.

    • @KingdaToro
      @KingdaToro Год назад

      @@ragzillaz You can see what sure looks like a hold section at 0:51

    • @ragzillaz
      @ragzillaz Год назад

      @@KingdaToro are you talking about the middle track which goes left out of the station? I'm assuming that's service track. There's a small motor roll out which goes straight forward to the switch but it doesn't look nearly long enough to hold a train. If you check out Zamperla's video on their "Lightning Launch 1074m" layout they're claiming 1300 rph with a 5 car (20 rider) Lightning train, 60 second cycle time. ruclips.net/video/n2RJGquo3Ys/видео.html

    People have to understand it’s basically impossible to make the top hat in a single launch with that little amount of track using LSMs. Only the hydraulic launch can do that; LSMs can’t accelerate the trains as fast in such little track/time. That’s why there’s the backwards launch: to build some speed for the third launch (which pushes the train up the top hat). And at the same time the hydraulic launch was very unreliable. So in the long run, switching to LSMs will probably save money and the ride will (mostly likely) have less downtime.

    • @ragzillaz
      @ragzillaz Год назад

      LSMs can, it just costs more in capital and operating expense to run double/triple LSM (and/or you have to cut down on train length, like they did with Red Force).
