A little extra income from a part-time job goes a long way. First, you have more money. And second, you have less time to spend that money.

Wise comment Pam Hopkins and great humanitarian!
I do the same, make do the best I can. I live in South Florida (very expensive). I say we pay for the weather😊🥴.
My home and car are paid off BUT taxes and insurances are ridiculously high! But I look around the corner at the poor renters who are paying $1900. For a 1-bedroom and my total monthly bills do not equal up to that.

Bad things can happen to wipe out a frugal person's savings and income. There aren't always easy answers. Sometimes people need help from others. The economy is terrible. We gave our home and cars paid off. We have income but the cost of everything is ridiculous

Yes! I'm sick of people assuming others don't know how to manage their money. I literally know people who did 'everything right according to society' and something came out of nowhere and wiped them out. A relative was a literal tightwad and did everything 'right'. Then out of kindness they were taking care of their adult daughter's dog because she moved. The dog got away from them and attacked and killed the neighbors goat. The neighbors were earning an income from that goat, so they got sued for a huge sum of money and their insurance didn't cover it and their daughter didn't have insurance.

I donated my car to charity. I no longer pay for gasoline, insurance, etc. If I need something I order it for home delivery. Most stores ship to your home. Most grocery stores have that service with a yearly fee, (I paid $60.00). The only thing is you need to spend $35.00, which is easy to do these days. I take the bus if I need to get somewhere. SAVES ME LOTS OF $❤

I learnt to be frugal from my parents.
This is what I noticed they did for years when money was tight.
Pay bills first (I actually ring around and always get reductions on home loan interest etc).
    Buy food next- NO takeaways.
(We only had fish and chips about once a year).
SAVE something for car repairs, new fridge (though of course pick this up used).
Anything left can be spent.(usually this was less than $10 a fortnight)

Hello, Money Mom! I have commented here in your past videos, not sure if I've discussed my side hustle. I give/donate plasma at my local CSL Plasma Center. The more plasma you can donate goes by your weight, the more you weigh, the more you can give and in turn the more you get paid . You can donate 2xs in a 7 day period. There are three tiers, I'm in the third. I receive $460 a month ( plus bonuses some months) for 1 1/2 hours a week of donating! It's a win win! While on the machine I watch my RUclips vids. So fun and I love paying it forward!

Some of my friends have developed ingenious ways to make a little money on the side. One disabled woman makes simple beaded earrings and sells them. One woman who loves gardening works evenings as a “plant/garden sitter” while people are away in vacation. Another woman has made impressive money by pet-sitting while the owners are on business trips or vacations. One young lady with autism gives manicures to friends and family (no, she doesn’t have a license but this is only friends and family.). Just some examples from my own experience.

I have tried to plan for everything! I grew up with a mother that spent all of the money and then some. I had to get a job at 13 so that I could have clothes. She tried to take my money, but my dad said absolutely not. There was so much stress in the house that it created a person that has a plan for as many situations as possible (real or perceived). We will survive!

Insurance, medical, and dental costs have risen so much that it's difficult for people to afford it. If you're low income, medical is covered, but there is little offered for dental or optometry services. Unfortunately, not everyone can get a part-time job and are too proud to ask for help. We help some of our relatives regularly, but I need to be more attuned to extra expenses that need addressing. Great video! Love to all, Linda 💕

Sometimes Dawn, you just have to resign to the fact that things are the way they are and you have to make the best of them…After I pay rent and utilities, I am lucky to have $300 a month left…the only leeway is cutting back on electricity and food…I pride myself in sitting in the dark mostly and only using the AC when I really need it…Half my family is here with me, so I’m not afraid…truthfully, I try not to waste energy on useless worrying…

Extreme frugality is one thing... ultra extreme frugality might be put in play to build a bigger financial nest egg. Podcasts that feature van life and living off the grid are very validating. It is a contribution to give ideas and support to others in dire circumstances.... I don't think that Dawn needs to live in extreme frugality. Her sensitivity to people who have.less financial wherewithal (as well as people who have a little bit more in life) is a very important character trait. Her openess to everybody also welcomes commenters who have a lot to contribute to everybody through her format.

In OH we have to have liability car insurance and I believe that is true in TX also. I know how hard it is to have so little money that you have to count every penny. When we married my husband was in college, we were living in CA, and I was making $400 per month. We got our dental work and eyes taken care of at the dental school and optometry school. I had a gold inlay done in 1968 for $25 and that tooth is still good today. All we paid for was the price of the materials. When we moved to Cincinnati we used the dental school here as well. I cut the family hair, including mine, for 20 years, and made my own clothes. When my husband was employed we had good insurance, but when he quit and we started a business we had no medical insurance. As a family of 5 we lived well below the poverty level for 2 years. Our kids got free lunch at school and got $10 visits at the clinic. We qualified for food stamps, but never took them. I shopped the day old stuff and dented cans and we ate a lot of rice and beans. We would go to pick your own places and get things like strawberries, peaches, and apples and I preserved them. For years I made crafts and sold them. Now I live on Social Security and savings and make extra money by selling clothes and my decluttered items on E-bay and Facebook Marketplace. I have known lots of people who shopped garage sales and thrift stores and made a living by reselling these items. In the 1990s one lady who lived in CA would fly in, rent a car and hotels for a 2 week trip twice a year to the Midwest and South. She shopped antique and thrift stores, and then shipped those things back to LA where she would sell them and make a profit. She told us that people in the Midwest saved everything and were sitting on a gold mine. Another thing we did was to learn how to fix and build things ourselves, or find skilled friends, neighbors, or handymen who could do it for us reasonably.

Its tough to find extra income for so many. 😢may i suggest a couple of things i am doing...pick up free items on the side of the road, clean them up then fix them up with a bit of elbow grease and paint if necessary. Once a month have a yard sale with the stuff you've gotten for free and anything you want to get rid of out of your house. You could also sell plants you've gotten out of your yard or propagate from your own house plants. Keep prices reasonable and you will make $ 😊 i make crafts and sell at senior center craft fairs in my area. Its $10 for a table and i usually make $50-100 each time. I clean houses for family and friends when they need extra help. I dont ask for a certain amount but usually make an extra $20-40 depending on the extent of the job. I hope these ideas help someone 😊

Dawn, What great insight you have on this subject. It is so dear to my heart too. I worked as a eldercare secretary at a inedpendent living facility. I can tell you that all these stories are true. So many people are struggling to get by. It breaks my heart to see people go without needed things like hearing aids, glasses and many other needed things for themelves. I know in my neignborhood, one of the widows took in a single woman who had been vetted by her church, before moving in but it was the best idea for both at the time while the woman finished her classes to reinvent herself so she could make more money. I know another friend who makes delicious breads and cakes and sells them at the farmer market in her area. She makes enough to pay for her car payment and insurance every month. I pray for anyone here who is struggling.

The affordable care act (Obama Care) charges for insurance according to what you make. You have many choices of plans and can pick what's affordable for you. Some options are free for low income. It's so important to have health insurance, as one hospital stay can drain your savings and possibly make you homeless!
Same with car insurance. There's so many crazy drivers out there! Get the least coverage you can, but please don't drop it!
Dawn's suggestion of extra income is a good one to make sure you can keep yourself covered! ❤ Thanks for caring MM!

Obamacare is not affordable. Your premiums are based on your income and, depending on how much you make, can be very low cost and in some cases zero. It’s the deductible that will drain you. Anywhere from $5,500.00 to 9,450.00 depending on the plan and what zip code you live in.

If you make too much money, you have to pay it back at tax time. Initially, it is based on what you state you make. Then at tax time you are sent the 1095A form to reconcile with the government.

    • @larmstrong2302
      @larmstrong2302 25 дней назад +3

@Lisa-Tahiti 5 days in the hospital cost approximately 13K. If you have a bad accident and a long hospital stay, you could end up losing your home. If you are able to drop your insurance, you're likely in good health, so maybe choosing a higher deductible that offers hospitalization (so the plan is cheaper or free) to help protect your assets would be fine. But protecting yourself against what can happen if you end up in the hospital is so important! 💯 There's many different plans offered.
I'm not saying it's right for everyone, but it is an option.
This option made it possible for me to retire, as I'm very sick and am now able to have insurance on my husband's self-employment income.
Insurance kept me working even though I'd come home so sick that I couldn't do anything else when I got home until I woke up the next day with enough energy just to work. A friend told me about the affordable care act (I didn't know this was an option, as I'd only been insured through a job with insurance), and I believe this will help extend my life. I retired 2 months ago. I slept for the entire first month. Now, it's one day at a time, and I am praying for better health.
Cobra was far more expensive for us through my job!
Maybe this will help somebody like me and my husband, who didn't know this option was out there.
      I hope you're blessed! 🙂

Permaculture is a back to the land and simple lifestyle movement. It seeks to be at one with nature, yourself, animals, and the people in your life. By shutting out the artificial and focusing on the natural, you come to realize that you are an inexhaustible source of wisdom and food. You begin to do tasks at the speed of life. More importantly, you realize that the values you were handed in school were the wrong value system. You begin to challenge yourself to see how much food you can produce. It's fun because you're not scared. One of the most impressive things is to walk past entire areas of the grocery store because you don't need them anymore. You walk past the produce section and the bread aisle because you are growing your own produce and you've learned to make your own biscuits, bread, and rolls. Soon you're walking past the cheese and egg sections. You install a gray water system. Which means that with a turn of a valve, near your backdoor, you've just watered all the plants you're growing. Turning permaculture into a turnkey operation. It is possible to hire people to build these systems for you if you've become too old to want to learn 'how-to' and tool up. I've developed a clothesline system in which I stand in one location and let the clothesline do the work of hanging out laundry. As you step off-grid, inner peace returns. This is what I'd tell anyone who realizes that modernity is designed to bankrupt people and leave then with a slave-mentality.

Economic collapse is designed to happen by govts who want to destroy nation-states so that they can build back better. TPTB want super-states, in which it doesn't matter what nation you're from but only what corporation you work for. This is what they mean by neo-feudalism. So families are finding themselves failing badly and they think it is their fault, it isn't.

sad commentary on our society that people have to struggle and not be able to afford health care, their cars, houses etc. Thinking you can live on just SS is also an issue, savings are important, also having a self funded pension or one from work that you can draw on when you retire. I know of people in their late 60's and early 70's who cannot afford to pay to live on their own, rents too high along with property taxes and insurance. some refuse to be realistic and keep getting deeper and deeper into debt. Our town has subsidized senior housing, rent is based on your monthly income, some seniors pay less than $50 a month because of their low SS checks. Medicaid is also an option for some who qualify along with food stamps and free transportation to medical appointments. Good to bring these issues up and discuss and learn from others, thanks Dawn

In my opinion, some of the most lasting memories you will make with your children won’t cost a thing, or very little. Just being available to them to talk and listen is huge. Taking them to library, reading to or with them, going for walks or hikes, playing cards or board games are all free or low-cost forms of entertainment, and are often much less stressful than planning a big trip or spending loads of money.

I agree with you when you say find ways to make extra money every extra dollar helps. I recently started up my pet sitting services again it's a side gig so it's as needed. I to have an elderly friend who I grocery shop for once and a while she tips me for my services. I to enjoy these side gigs.

If you have a mortgage, you cannot cancel home insurance. I have a "reverse mortgage," which is really helpful, but insurance is a necessity.

I thank goodness we live in the UK where we have the NHS so medical needs are free for everyone (except for dental and eyecare - but this can be covered if you are on low income) Prescriptions are £9.90 per item but free if you have certain medical conditions or low income.

Have you ever used the medical services? How long did it take to get an appointment and then surgery if needed. Curious here!

@@monikaw1369 Luckily I have not needed surgery in about 20 years, but as an example, I had a really painful shoulder last Wednesday. Requested a doctors appointment at about 3.30pm online, got an appointment 1.30pm next day, saw doctor who sent me for an xray (x-ray facilities in my medical centre) - had xray and was home in 2 hours from seeing doctor. She rang me at 5pm with xray results (luckily clear) electronically sent prescription to chemist close to me and emailed chart of exercises- had prescription by 6pm - btw she told me have a a trapped nerve in my neck causing shoulder and arm pain. (xray was because I had a neck vertabrae crush fracture many years ago and she wanted to check nothing had shifted etc)

I am on Social Security disability and my mother is on social security retirement and we live together. It is a struggle sometimes, but one thing I found out is that if you have social security income or a pension, and you are in debt and cannot make the payments along with things that you need to survive like your home and food and medicine, that you do not have to pay those debts! Yes they will serve you with papers that they are going to sue but they cannot garnish your Social Security wages up to twice the amount that is deposited. There is a RUclips channel here called the helps nonprofit law firm and he does a live video every Tuesday and Thursday answering questions and telling people how their income is protected. Just something I want to pass along and I'm not at all trying to steer anyone away from your Channel!

Two ideas for a little extra money would be babysitting, even a few hours, and cutting grass for people. My heart goes out to people in situations like that. I used to be one of them.

3 years ago we bought tile for our house. We need to get it put down but my husband is so busy working 50-60 hour work weeks. So we’re going to hire a good friend and contractor. Just the material for under the tile is $2,600 ! That’s not including labor. We might have to save up for this for the next several months. I don’t want to take it out of my emergency fund 😮

I just found the best dental plan ever: $5000 with 0 deductible...plus $1600/year hearing aid benefit and $200 for vision. Note: I am an insurance broker and look for 'the best' at all times.

If you’re elderly, you could apply for senior citizen housing/apartments that charge rent based on your income. Sell your house and do this before you can’t afford to repair or keep your home.

Why do people live, barely scraping by, for years? Dont they ever pause for a moment and start to formulate a plan to change things for the better?

This is embarrassing but when my mom died, that's when I realized I had to change things & try to save. I was now head of the house & had to make sure all the bills were paid, not just my portion of the bills. One thing I've noticed, & I'm not trying to make fun of anyone, is that some people honestly don't have the mental capacity to plan things. My older brother has always been "slow" so he doesn't know hobw to budget or save $. He doesn't understand that he is supposed to save for the future because he never thinks that far ahead. He's in his own little world.
I've worked with people that think social security will be enough to live on. They don't understand you need to save up additional money as well. Some people have been on welfare so long they think the government will provide everything for them.
One major obstacle is technology. I know people who refuse to learn new things because they're too scared or think they're too stupid to learn(their words, not mine)so they end up spending more money than they have to. For example, there are apps that can help you do your own taxes but if you don't know how to use the internet, you have to have someone else do them for you & those places are expensive! If you don't understand how to use a cell phone, you can't access digital coupons, money saving apps, etc.
I'm sorry I know this is long, but there are people who just didn't do well in school or had to quit for various reasons. Therefore they never learned how to properly read, basic math, etc. so the only jobs they can get are low paying ones that make it difficult to plan/save.
These are just a few reasons off the top of my head & I know they don't apply to everyone. My parents had to quit school early to help pick cotton but we always had food on the table. My Dad could barely read but he could fix things & never spent money needlessly. My mother could sew & cooked all our meals so she was able to save up for emergencies. I'm sure there are more reasons why some people don't plan for the future but I wanted to give some insight as to why some people struggle more with finances than others.
