  • Question 1 on the Massachusetts ballot would grant the state auditor the authority to audit the legislature on things like accounts, programs and functions. A "yes" vote would grant that authority, while a "no" vote would make no change in the law.
Mary Connaughton from the Pioneer Institute representing YES on 1 and political science professor Jerold Duquette arguing NO on 1 shared their arguments on Boston Public Radio.

Holy cow this guy was great! Respecting institutions and norms is good actually. Our institutions are awesome in America and populist brainrot is cancerous. You have to win elections, next time don’t reject ranked choice voting mass!

We must have been watching different discussions. He did not make a good case for anything as far as I could tell. "Nobody else does it" is a pretty good way for nothing to ever change. Even if it is found to be unconstitutional, it would still send a clear message to the hill: Clean up your fucking act.
I expect this was not put forth as a petition to amend the constitution because, as they said, the auditor thinks the right already exists and wants to clarify things. Not only that, to do so in a timely manner. The amendment process takes at least two years and requires two votes by the legislature.
