    That's funny, I use to collect saltwater tropical fish. When we were down at 100ft targeting Cuban Hogs, we caught a Snowy Grouper. It was black with white dots. Guess they lighten up with age, or maybe they get stressed from coming up so fast that the lose a little color.
    When we brought them up, we'd tie them off at 25ft for 30 to 45 minutes to decompress them a bit. Still had to pop their bladder with a hypo needle but they wouldn't make it without the decompress. Lots of fun in the old days.

      @@KeyWestWaterman I dove tropical for 4 yrs and that was the only one I saw caught alive. When working on shrimp boats we would catch a few in 300ft, but they were around 10 inches, not very big.
      No on sees Cuban Hog fish on top of the reef in 30ft, but I caught 2 in 30ft in a 3 year period. We caught a lot at 100ft. I guess sometimes the fish get lost and show up in unexpected places.
      We chummed up the water with ground fish in a net bag we tied off to the anchor, and dropped it in 100ft when going down for Cuban Hogs. Then we waited about 30 minutes for the chum to do it's job. We'd go down with a barrier net each to the anchor. There were Cubans everywhere, but we only had 5 minutes to catch them and go back up to the decompression point where we staid, I forget...maybe 15 minutes, this was in the mid 90s. Had a tank in the boat with a long hose and regulator at 20ft in case we ran out of air.
      But that one time.... I didn't catch it, I was diving with my buyer and he caught it. Never saw a live one before that.

      @@KeyWestWaterman wel, I'm 69 yrs old now, I doubt anyone who was doing it when I was would still be in the business now.
      Old Devon at Reef Relief was giving the tropical fish business Hell after they finished putting mooring buoys on the core reef areas.
      They always have to have a cause to get people to keep donating them money. So for 6 months she was dogging our fishery. Problem was it was all made up stories/lies.
      Didn't look like she would stop until she put us out of business.
      So I wrote an article in Solaris Hill that close the doors of Reef Relief for 3 months. All their funding had dried up over night. Folks can tell which is the truth when they see both sides of the story.
      When they reorganized and opened the doors back up, they had hired a Marine Biologist, so any cause they had after that was backed up with facts. She never forgave me for doing that, but we were the victims here, we were the ones who were harmed, and she couldn't expect us to go down without a fight. Those were the good old days. 😁

    Did I hear 600 feet deep?
    I loved to go out for grouper here in NC.
    A charter Capt. I came to know and who owned a bait and tackle shop that he ran on non fishing days. I'd stop when he was there and buy a little something and talk
    with him. One day I said to him we wanted to catch grouper but so far had only caught small barely legal fish or throw backs and could he help us get on some decent grouper. He walked over where he kept his grease charts on the wall removing one and asked me where we had tried to catch them. I told him a couple of spots we fished and he showed me those spots on his map then marked an area he said was another 15 or so miles farther out. Total distance from inlet , ...36 miles. We first went to
    the area he showed me and it was a large area of high relief coral bottom and we pulled dead baits behind skirts so we could fast troll for anything while we kept eyes glued on depth.sounder set to zoom in and show the bottom and the ledges we were looking for. In just that first trip we located and marked several promising ledges. It took a few trips to learn the best way of pulling fish from their home and up 100 feet to the boat. After a few trips with only small grouper in the box and many should have seen us fighting the ones that got away I took our rod and reels to a tackle shop and had them fitted with motors and 200 lb braid.
    In time we had learned to use whole menhaden.for bait because as soon as reaching the bottom and engaging reel we would get constant rat a tat bites I called them from baby black bass or grunts. I learned quickly you have to have a big enough bait to endure those small fish that would get the attention of grouper that would come to check out what was attracting the little guys. The machine gun bites of those small fish would suddenly stop and we knew they had cleaned the 9/0 circle hooks we used or they stopped biting because a big grouper was moving in an they'd give em room. A grouper bite can take the rod outa your hand if you aren t holding tight and we'd let the rod touch the water before engaging motor letting those circle hooks set themselves like they are designed too. Our problem in past trips was once hooked it was easy for a big gag or red to strip the drag allowing them to cut the 200 lb braid like sewing thread leaving that fish to swim around with hook and dragging a 16 ounce weight around effectively killing the bite for some time. By using motors we could get them up high enough when theegdy realized their mistake they couldn't get back down into coral to get free. I'd tighten drag with pliers as far as possible before bending drag legs. If you tried to pull line from reels by hand the line would cut into your hand before slipping from drag. Those big gags and especially the reds would stall motors , slip drag but stop short of getting home and we d get them up again even higher pulling with all we had slowly gaining each run finally getting them to the pressure change that effectively stunned them and they were ours. We still hooked fish we couldn't get off the bottom however we did bring in gags over 30 lbs and reds up half that. Red grouper pull twice as much as any other we found. We caught gags , reds ,scamp as well as trigger fish. Snapper and occasionally 4- 5 lb black bass. We d hook occasionally sharks and Amberjack that would destroy leaders and pull you to your knees with drag locked down. I got spoiled from eating fresh grouper, to me the finest tasting fish in the sea. N C started limiting the amount we could keel untill it no longer was feasible to make the over 70 mile round trip and we eventually stopped going out and I sold my ride after years of going offshore. It was when we could justify going one Hell of a ride and fight when we got there and hooked up.

    Decades ago when I was commercial like this in Guam, we were anchoring in 600’ high spots and fishing current swings. Are you anchoring or drifting here? I worked two Miya-Epochs with 5 hooks and a chum bag on the swivel. Often put a hidden hook inside the chum bag as the bigger grouper and snapper would just shred the bag! Only issues I had were floaters drifting away and getting the anchor stuck and having the breakaway not break away!

I have a ew buddies down there but nobody does the commercial thing I know already. It would be awesome to get some info from you if you would be willing. No spots or anything hahaha. Just permits and license stuff. Also ins and outs of the markets. Thanks.

    First Channel or Video on youtube I have ever commented on or “liked”. Last year I bought a Shimano Forcemaster, spooled it with 80lb powerpro and put it on a Shimano Tallus Bent butt. Do you think I spooled it with heavy enough line or should have I went with 100lb instead? I had my equipment for over a year now and have yet to deep drop. I am up in NC and it’s about a 55 mile ride From the inlet to around the 500ft Mark. As soon as the weather gets right I plan on Trolling for Wahoo but I am going to bring my deep drop set up with me and try it out. Hopefully my reel and line is strong enough to pull up them up.

    • @KeyWestWaterman
      @KeyWestWaterman  3 года назад +1

      haha thats awesome! honored to be the first! and 80 is plenty! my deep drop and sword fishing reels both have 65 lb braid on them, most deep drop reels only have about 50 lbs of drag so 80 is plenty. I rarely have to lock my drag even with the big snowy groupers!

    What’s the most current use deep drop in? Went out of port canveral last weekend and current was 3.4-3.7kts. Using 6 lbs couldn’t get it down there very well. Any suggestions

    • @KeyWestWaterman
      @KeyWestWaterman  4 года назад +2

      that's smoking!! I try not to drop in more than 2 knots or so to be honest. but also depends on what kind of bottom I'm in, rocky bottom is a no no for me with strong currents lol mud isn't so bad. not much you can do, more weight to hold up and down and just being careful, manage the rod closely, never lay her down in a strong current.

  • @paulkuiper1077
    @paulkuiper1077 2 года назад +1

    Great Video Aaron, I'm up in Stuart, how do you deal with current? once you hit bottom doesn't it drag you off the spot at anywhere between 2 and 5 MPH?

    • @KeyWestWaterman
      @KeyWestWaterman  2 года назад

      our current varies greatly, some days is 4 knots, some days its at a stand still. all depends where the stream is

    Bring 3 buddies with you, to basically spread-out the fixed cost (boat, gas, etc.) drastically.
    Do you consider depreciation on the boat, and on the motor(s) in your profit/loss calculations?
