I really like, respect and support people like you people that do commercial spearfishing because its the most selective way for hunting fish and you only kill what you want and what you need. I am only 15 but i really like spearfishing since its selective and you get to see what is down there in the depth even if you dont get a fish sometimes you still really enjoy it.

Can't believe how easy you make that look. lol..... Nice to have friends down there with you. Some people have no clue to how hard you work for those fish and how expensive it is to keep your boat and gear up to date. Now with 5-6 dollar gas coming it really will hurt.

I could tell it was opening day, tame groupers :) I'm 84 with 60 years of shooting. 20 on scuba and the last 40 free diving. I don't like commercial but fully understand why you do. Great video and I like your attitude and demeanor. You are obviously a good athlete and quit fit. Best wishes in the future. I can't take the heat or cold so I shoot vicariously on you tube vids. I'm on FB as Stanley L Cates. My son now has my 23ft Seacraft in Pensacola. I live near Houston.

Man I can't even see the fish but you on point like I always tell you man what I like about the spear fishing I mean sometimes you catch the big ones on the top but like the Cobia or the Goliath or the snappers you get to choose you know really getting nice fish all the time I don't know I just like it I think you do better spearfishing than you do on top water but sometimes your videos watching it watching you fish with the poles you do good with that too man you know so and that would be a good thing for you to get with deer meat because he's he's all right I ain't going to lie to you I don't know if he's as good as you but he's all right all right bro keep them videos coming man living that life in Paradise

Hey great video! This is the first time I see a commercial spearfisher from the US. Most spearos I see on youtube are hobby divers. I am from Vietnam and most of the best divers we have here are commercial spearfishers. Fishing is their full time job but I haven't seen anyone in the West making a full time shooting fish for profit. Seems like it's simpler to just run spearfishing charters, better for the environment too.
Thanks for watching! Yea there aren't a ton of people in the keys who spear commercially full time, its only a small portion of my income. I've been doing more than normal because of the state of our economy. They have close our borders to tourist, so I can't run charters which is the majority of my income. But I have had to to more commercial than normal to pay the bills! I prefer to do charters because like you said its a lot less on our fish numbers! but anyways hope you like the vids and stay tuned for more!

Aaron - superb dives and congrats on paying a few bills! The one thing that I never hear about is how you pay your divers. With all of the close-calls with the guys in the gray suits, no matter how much any of your co-workers love to dive, they have to get paid at some point! I love feeling like I'm diving right next to you, but it is so frustrating seeing a big black grouper take your spear into the rocks, If you had tanks on, it would be so much easier to wait it out with the fish on the bottom, but you've got to get top side for a fresh air pit stop. LOVE what you all do. Thank you again, my friend! Will
I'm just not a big fan of tank diving to spear to be honest, I think our natural limits help preserve the populations. but we all have opinions doesn't mean mine is right! and I have a select few friends that spear with me for fun, they have day jobs that they make their living with so they come and dive for fun which means they get out for free. and they help me make a living when I need it! everybody wins!

WOW! When I lived in the keys there was no closed season on Grouper, and no limit. We could fish them or spear them all year round. But that was the 90s. We use to be able to collect as many Queen Conch as we wanted. The one year they closed that fishery. Said it was a "5 year moratorium", 10 years later it was still closed for taking conch. Same with Jew Fish. Once they take it away, they never give it back.

@@KeyWestWaterman sure have, I knew the guy who got the Jew Fish protected. He had tons of videos of him slaughtering them with a power head. Then he married a marine biologist and made a big speech to the state fisheries on how they're getting wiped out and needed to be protected. What a jerk, he was the one who was killing a boat load of 500 pound fish everyday the weather was good. If we wanted to save the Jew Fish we could have simply banned him. Actually, a size and number limit with a closed season would have done the job. I'll bet to this day, you still can't take Jew Fish, when they take it away, they never give it back.

I don't often hammer the same spots repeatedly, the best spot in this vid I had never dove before. I use my sounder mainly to find bait/life. find what grouper like to eat and you find the grouper!

I've never done any kind of training or anything, I grew up in the water, swimming diving and surfing so it all came naturally. Not the answer you want to hear im sure, but practice and persistent will get you there!
