- The number 2 nobby from the 'pick a winner' competition was Justin's pick of the entire bunch.
There is great hope for this particular nobby, it has an exceptionally thick color bar compared to most. To take advantage of how thick this color bar is, there may be some slicing involved, but you'll have to watch to find out if it pays off or not!
Here is the gem

While I appreciate that you're willing to try different formats with your videos, YOU"RE the star of the show. We're all here for you, your wisdom, your knowledge, your memories, your engagement, your stories. You're an amazing craftsman and an even better teacher, and honestly that's what we're all here for
I was coming here to say pretty much the same thing! Glad I’m not the only one who feels this way
I appreciate that Thank you. Yes some weeks I just want to inspire through opal and others I wanna talk about it.
I think this may have been a tribute to his dad.
I disagree strongly. Star of the show is the opal. Best video to date!
You obviously do not know how hard it is to keep making videos like he does. Let him just do his thing. He knows he has a fan base and people like change. He is not going to bow down to one person and what they would like him to do so cut it out.
Justin, you are the master! I did not see that nobby coming out as a matched pair. Congratulations!
That's partially why he held it to a light to try and determine what he has to work with as far as internal inclusions, cracks, etc. And YES most definitely a Master at his Craft
Breathtakingly Beautiful pair!
Thank you for editing this abbreviated episode!
This was enjoyable watching the master lapidary craftsman bring the stone to such perfection.
Excellent video and superb gems cut. Miss your narration. , your wit and experience shared cannot be replaced by music. Kind regards Morgan in South Africa
Always great when a rare pair is created! Going to be amazing for someone.
Absolutely wonderful photography and music! Great storytelling!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Interesting format but I love your commentary on the normal format. You add so much with your voice over. It is good to try things even if some of your people might want something else!
I expected this to end in a dance!
Me too lol
@@blackopaldirect And? WHERE IS IT? ❤
How can you not love him dancing
I'm dancing listening to the opening right now knowing what fun and beautiful things are coming even though I missed the live.❤
🗣SPRINKLAHHHHHH🎉
That was a beautiful pair and so relaxing to watch. I would like to see how you cut some of the bolder ople that you have been showing😍🤩
Thank you yes I have bought that boulder from someone else that cut it so I don't have any sorry Kristine
Great work again Justin. Bravo! Awesome to watch a master craftsman working their skills and showing their craft.
Reminds me of when I visited Europe (almost 30yr ago) watching masters making Venician Glass products.
Thanks again!
Absolutely amazing Justin👌🏻 Your vids really are a masterpiece⛏️🏴
Thank you Gold Hunter
I wish! What a beauty! 😮
Thank you
Very welcome
È sempre emozionante vedere con quanta perizia fai uscire delle gemme bellissime congratulations per il tuo lavoro😮❤ bravooo 😍👏🤙🤝.
Love, love, love this pair. I look at your opals and can't really afford what I want, because y'all have increased the value of my desires. Your vids have really opened my eyes to the world of opals and now I am obsessed. This pair really speaks to me....ahhhh one of these days I find just the right opals for me that I can get. FYI, wouldn't buy from any one but you. Absolutely gorgeous pair that I feel in my heart and soul. Thank you!!!
Thank you
Love it. I like the different video format. Very well put together. The Black Opal team is very slick right now! 😍
Thank you
Not as big a fan of this style of video compared to your typical. Nice cut though.
Fantastic video! love this style of letting your work do the talking! Also love your other videos when you do explain things, but this is a nice added change to your video selections! Keep being creative!
You have spent a lifetime bringing beauty into the world :)
Glad you like them!
Those are really pretty!
Thank you! Cheers!
Without a doubt your father is so proud of you and everything you have achieved, not just as a master of your trade but as a person too 🥰🙏🏻
Love the videos
Loving the deep azurite blue, like a sapphire which happens to be my birthstone. Only been doing lapidary work for 5 years now. I'm 54 and enjoy it emensely, wishing I had discovered it sooner.
Just my opinion no one get mad I did not enjoy this video at all because of music playing threw out video, I would rather Justin explain what he is doing
I just fast forward it to end
Blue mandolin a beautiful pair
Nice opal, but this long time fan perfers when you talk about them and what you are doing and dont care for music. Learned nothing about this opal so I not into this new format either. Please stay with what works and Be the teacher not just another opal video blending in with the others on the internet ❤
Justin, love your videos. Enjoy the occasional suspense til everything for the most part turns out beautifully.
JUST WANT TO ASK: did you injure your thumb or did that spot show up on its own? Pls check if it’s not an injury. We care, stay healthy!
This is the one i voted for because I have a stone I've been putting off cutting that is very similar. I cant decide if I want to cut it in half like you did or not. It looks like your worked out however the color around the perimeter is better than the color in the middle.
maybe cut the better color outside off, and doublet them, use lesser color center for bigger stone...my thoughts
Literally a mirrored perfect pair. Outstanding.
Very well made video.
Glad you liked it!
As a person who has known people to lose fingers from different sorts of saws. Black Opal Direct makes me nervous as hell because of how close he keeps his hands to a revolving spinning blade. There's a dichotomy of emotions for me watching your videos. Me - "Wow nice atmosphere, great visuals, wonder what amazing opal he's cutting now? DON'T CUT YOURSELF! TURN OFF THE SAW! WHY DO YOU STILL HAVE IT ON!?!?!?!"
Fantastic Justin 👍👍🏴☠️❤️❤️
blue pilled. They make me think of cold medicine, but A LOT more beautiful
First off loved the pair of opals, absolutely delightful. Secondly, while I enjoyed the new format, music and classy editing, I missed hearing your voice and thought processes, for me it adds to the dynamic and personality of each opal you cut and gives each one its own story. In saying that, I would still watch everything you put out☺
Thank you very much for the feedback
Could always have a commentary running from a local horse race instead?
@@blackopaldirectI miss hearing your voice and funny banter Justin. I believe I learn more about opals when you explain things as you go along. Opals are one of my favorite gem stones. ❤😊
How interesting! This was the nobby I voted on. Didn’t expect a pair like that!
Thank you
Such good content thanks !!!
Glad you enjoyed it
Those would make some absolutely beautiful earrings!
Its fabulous how everything in the world is trying to take a shape. Even the atoms are trying to find a group to form a complicated structures as gemstones.
The jeweler's/gem cutter's work is to release the beauty of the nature that was hid within and improve it to perfection💖
Booooooo! No Justin!! Opal is beautiful though. Going to make me go to the website to see the value. Cheeky monkey. Love you Justin and BOD Team.
I preferred your videos when you weren’t trying to make a Hollywood production
Justin - lovely gems!
FWIW, I prefer the videos where you provide verbal analysis of what you are doing and why, even if it's dubbed after the fact. IMAO, it’s the "why" that makes your videos interesting. It also adds drama to see if your instincts about the "why" were correct.
In this video, you cut the rough opal (nobby?) with the saw before it even touched the wheel, leaving it to my amateur, uninformed opinion as to why. That's just my opinion, and it's worth exactly what you paid for it.
Don't like giving the thumbs down but I think most of us are comfortable to listen to you talk us through your experience.Iam a 60,s 70,s music chronic .This new music dousnt do much for me.
I miss your talking! The music was nice but I like you telling what you are doing step-by-step.
How did you know that the stone was a black opal. Opal is my birth stone. Hard to find here in the city for a reasonable price. The outcome is beautiful. Where in the world would black opals or other opals come from? Love the video. Like some crafters like quiet to concentrate what they are doing. For me, I need the TV on, just to focus on my projects. Awesome job.
I nearly cried when you started cutting this stone in half lol but it still came out nicely 👍
Omg me too I thought he wanted the black inside like that I've been looking online for used cutting wheels and now I'm questioning everything I know about life
trust in the force padwan
@@blackopaldirect I couldn't see everything as you can , so I just knew whatever happens would be entertaining 😂
While the different format made a nice change, i really missed hearing your thinking behind the process, explaining why you chose to slice and make a pair. Also the videography of the stones wasnt great, it wasn't until the final shots that the pattern in the opals became visible, I thought most of the way through that there was a large patch of poch (is that how you spell Poche? Poch? Potch?!) In the centre of the stones, and was wondering why you weren't removing it.
What a beautiful set for earrings!
I think so too!
Can't say I'm a fan of this format. The music was loud and took away from what you do. I'm all for trying new things, is was really neat when you had your son on cutting a stone, or the visits to Lightning Ridge.
I like the new format. The only thing I didn't like was how you're trying to get us to go to the website to spend money before we can find out the value. It made it feel kind of like an ad. Not what we've been used to over the years where you have been. The teacher from beginning to end, including valuation. I hope you do change that part and it doesn't become commonplace in your videos.
If they had come out slightly different sizes, they would still make terrific his & hers rings.
I like it much better with the usual commentary.
I would for example like to know what you saw that made you cut the stone in half.
no talking BAD . talk alot is good for the show. Be Safe love your talkees.
Wow, absolutely stunning
Thank you! Cheers!
@Justin, I did some research on building a diy “soft” X-ray source to take pics inside these opels. It’s probably too much for any of your contacts to build, but, they’re not “terribly difficult” to build. It does require a 35Kv power supply, a beam supply vacuum tube and so fourth. It’s not that expensive. It does require much caution to prevent electrical shock and X-ray overexposure. If you’ve got any ham radio friends, it should be easy for them to build.
In Australian talk - cheers!
Wow, super thick color bar on this one.
And it cut into an amazing pair! Not quite as black as I like, but then again I like those jet black opals where the color is only seen in sunflash.
Sure is!
Once again, the gems are shaped as beautifully as the video!
Thank you so much 😀
For some reason this had a sad vibe....
Super ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Looking like a beautiful gem is going to arrive very soon! ❤✌🇨🇦 oops I mean two beautiful gems 💎! 😂
Hope so!
A minor suggestion, Justin. A friend of mine who sells expensive coloured diamonds told me he doesn't clip his nails but rather files them, to enhance the close-up experience.
Hahah good to know
Wow. Just. Wow. I was worried when the slice revealed a really dark patch in the middle. Almost looked like potch or something, to the untrained eye. But DANG. That color runs deep and mysterious. Further enhancing my belief opal is the best gemstone around. Diamonds, rubies, emeralds. All just ok, compared to the crystallized fire that comes out of Australia.
Yes I was worried too
Very well done, both the video and the jems 👍
Thanks again.
Our pleasure!
WooHooo that was a funky fun video to watch ✌😎✌Thanks for sharing
Glad you enjoyed it
Spot on pair of gems would of preferred a talk through of decision to cut . Defo prefer your normal style of video .
Fair call
How's about"I'm going in" when starting on the rough and when you have the final stone...."I went in"
Great video and kudos to your video editor! Thanks for sharing!
That would be me. Thank you
At the end of a busy exhausting but productive day I love to watch inspiring videos from Black Opal Direct because they are SO relaxing.
Thank you Justin and crew. 😘
I'm weeping right now because this is the most beautiful introduction I've even seen you do. Music, editing, visuals are sheer perfection!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You're the best! Thank you
Funny I feel exactly the opposite about this video. I didn’t like a constant music overlay, missed the cutting comments and silly Justin. I actually fast forwarded to the end to see the beautiful stones. To each their own. I’ve watched all of your videos and thank you for what you do. You got me through the pandemic. Each video was a spot of light in the dark times.
Buy him a glass of wine first will ya
Hello Justin,
kove your work iustin its always surprisibg what happens when you put these stones on the wheel love it mate
Thank you
Why the marker is that where there is more color and that's where you will cut ?
That is what I want to know as well ?
Beautiful, great job!
Can you PLEASE explain why the potch you cut thru wouldn't have been better to leave as the base and cut around the outside of the opal to make an all directional black opal with potch on the inside where you can't really see it
I wondered that right away too!
Please do not think this is me acting as if I know anything I just always thought a bigger stone was better value so I am genuinely curious because I've seen thousands of stone I would rather cut the pairs because myself I much prefer a 3-5 ct store over a massive one as far as looks and appeal
The piece didn't show the dark inside until it was sliced but by polishing it as you would have wanted would only have made the purple and blue color. This way I got green as well
Of course I didn't come up with that brilliant thought until you'd already sliced it #20/20Hindsight 😝
It's always a great evening when I see a new upload from Justin at BOD. What a magical stone, and also those boulder opals you showed off yesterday.
Haha thank you
Beautifully done with a great soundtrack to boot. Just love it, Justin
Thank you :-)
Hi Justin, love to see how much love you put inside your work. Respect! Do you send also to Europe? Specially to The Netherlands or France? I wanna buy some very special opal from you.
Quite a perfect pair - so stunning - well done
Thank you! Cheers!
Second ❤
So I have a question? When you have a 2 sided gem and you dopp the polished side so you can polish the second side, how do you get it off the dopping stick and get the wax off with out scratching the first polished side???
Put it in the freezer is one option
Perfect
Justin & B.O.D. I wat to say THANK YOU my friends & Teacher for everything especially the emails and time given to us.
Amazingly beautiful 😊
Thank you! Cheers!
Not everyone would have looked at that Nobby and seen the potential..I think some would have cut it and thought is was flawed because of the darkness in the center of each piece. But you, saw the potential and made something so special out of it..a pair of such lovely pieces, it's amazing! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
KILLER PAIR JUSTIN!!! BTW I also watch the video at 1.75 and the music sounded amazing at that speed IMO.
such beautiful opals 😮 can’t wait to see what the next rough piece holds!
Justin ... simply put - ROCKS!!!! Love and appreciation and blessings from Georgian Bay, Ontario! (PS - Hi Tamika you rock as well luv!) MQH
I would like to see what a good jeweler will do with this pair, earrings maybe? They are exquisite!
Fascinating! How can you possibly know which way an opal will face best! Conundrum & MAGIC!
I'm glad I can write, because now I'm speechless🤩 Looks like an underwater sinkhole. When you had cut Opal in half.
Btw, what type of liquid do you use to preserve your "beaten by sand" Opals.🤪🤣 In the glass jars.....
C'mon now, if you’re playing funk for closing music, you’ve gotta work in the 1980s hit, Funkytown! I'm pretty sure it's legally required in most of the world. ... not that I'm a lawyer.
That was awesome, two beautiful stones.
😎😎😎👍👍👍
Thank you
Good show! My favorite part is watching the process.
I'm a monster...
For a brief moment while you were twirling the rough knobby, I thought I was in the space shuttle looking out a porthole at the blue earth covered in clouds. Tears for Fears - Mad World was playing in the background.
A real space odyssey
Please don't mistake black mark on thumb for black mark on stone...
Wow freakin beautiful. My favourite coloured opal is deep purple with green flecks and just a tad of blue...to good.
I know where I’m buying y black opal! Wife’s favorite
Hey just incredible,
I want to say thank you. You inspired me to take my son for a holiday to lightning ridge.
We found some opal after it rained at Grawin. We just picked it up next to the road.
So I tried polishing one up and it looks cool.
I wonder what’s the best way to get it validated.. cheers.
Wowza, you don't see this perfect color that often. Brilliance is the word I'm thinking.
This is a great format👍✅️
Thank you
di kampungku banyak batu seperti ini !!
I loved this Justin! This sums up why I started watching your channel: the videos always relaxed me after a long day and the beautiful opals that you produce just make me happy! Those are two of your best yet opals: they remind me of a pair of gorgeous blue eyes. ❤❤❤
