  • This Easter, President Russell M. Nelson invites you to follow Jesus Christ and feel the peace and joy of forgiveness. Beginning with the Savior's timeless words on the cross, "Father, forgive them for they know not what they do" (Luke 23:34), President Nelson shares from the scriptures-and from his own personal experiences-how letting go of old hurts and grudges allows the Savior to heal our souls.

I’m a faithful Roman Catholic, but I needed to hear this. I’ve been recently struggling to forgive those who have wronged me, and hearing this has given me such understanding, and a primary objective: to forgive my trespassers, as the Lord forgives my trespasses. Thank you for this message. God bless.

I can honestly say that because of this video, today I forgave my father for years of abuse and neglect that I suffered at his hand. He is not perfect, and I know he will make mistakes in the future, but today I sincerely forgave him for what he has done and what he may do. I haven't told him yet because I want to wait until I see him in person in May, but it is such a weight lifted off my shoulders to know I no longer have to carry the anger and hurt I have harbored against him for so many years.

This is beautiful. Forgiveness is difficult both to give and receive sometimes. Forgiveness, however, is a truly righteous judgment given to us and that we give to others. Forgiveness as well as repentance are beautiful steps towards living a good and righteous life with Jesus Christ.

What a gift forgiveness can be for those of us who have been wronged at the hands of others. No matter your father’s reaction, you have laid this burden at your Savior’s feet and no longer have to bear this pain. Sadly, We often continue to feel the sting of abuse long after it occurred, but i can choose to relieve my pain by letting go and letting God.

My husband showed this to an agnostic co-worker and she asked “why did he need THEIR forgiveness? Couldn’t he just forgive himself?”
I thought about that for a while, and then re-watched this video. I think that President Nelson didn’t want forgiveness just for himself - he wanted this family to feel the power of forgiveness. He wanted this family to be relieved of any pain and resentment. And he never gave up trying to lead them to the source of all forgiveness. This story testifies to me that he is prophet of God, leading others to the Savior…even if it takes decades.

This is a wonderful point you bring up. Pres. Nelson could have said, “I’m just going to move on. It’s not my fault. I can’t waste energy”-all common sentiments coming from many in the world today. But that’s not what Pres. Nelson did. He continued to CHOOSE to extend love to people who blamed him. He chose to continue to turn outward even though he could’ve chosen otherwise. Because he did so, the miracle of this long-lasting friendship occurs, the Savior’s atonement had full effect on both him and the Hatfield’s. We are strengthened by his message.

I consider myself a forgiving person. Past betrayals and stinging hurts don’t stay with me I give them to Christ. However, I do go around being mad at the world for being such a rotten place to raise my kids, I feel anger (not righteous anger that leads to righteous action) at politicians and economic leaders for being greedy and corrupt. I can say I hate people I’ve never met in these contexts. I will ask Christ to help me forgive the difficult world that makes life hard everyday not that it makes the corrupt abuse okay but that the poison can leave my heart.

I do struggle with being angry at the world, sometimes, a bit more when they are people I have met and know well. Please bear with me, for a small moment. I am one of the great-grandsons of Rey Lucero Pratt. He is a good man. However, Great-Grandma May (Mary Stark).. is not. Covert narcissism and unrighteous dominion have torn apart sections of my extended family. My own greatest betrayal came this way from a parent.
Despite how personally painful and difficult this has been, I do agree that holding to the poison is damaging. I still ask the Father to help me give the hurt to Master Jesus. One of the greatest blessings in doing so is coming to know (well, remember, really) my ministering angels personally, including dear Bisabuelo Rey.

It affects me enough that I took our church's Emotional Resiliency Course. It was wonderful. We are applying those principles, as my husband joined me. We will continue having lessons at home on the topics and I am trying, WORKING on my sims, and my faults. I need to forgive, to focus on the Light, my Savior.

What I will tell you is this... Forgiveness of others and forgiveness of yourself with a truly sincere heart will lift so much weight from your shoulders. The ability to breathe once again from true comfort, you don't realize how that feels because it has been so long. Like taking off a heavy backpack you have been carrying for years. Take the time, speak with our father through prayer, and ask what you should do. The moment will come, and you will be given a choice to make. Keep an open mind, and a contrite heart. You will be given gifts of peace and comfort beyond your understanding.

Christ doesn't simply cover. Or precious Savior helps recover, heal, and aid in whatever we need. There was an interesting question/ quote from a movie that i feel would bring my point to the forefront. " when we pray, and ask God for specific means to help us, does he give them to us directly or does he create opportunities for us to gain ,for example patience, or understanding, or does the reward seem more exactly what we think we need? Does God offer us countless opportunities to learn, grow in faith and in love for and of him? If he simply gave us everything we wanted the instant we asked would faith be able to take root? Or is it in the work and working through the opportunities we are given or presented with allow for faith and dedication to take hold in us in our Heavenly Father. "

I learned forgiveness from laying my childhood pain at the Savior’s feet and letting go. It has been a conversation between the Savior and myself. Those who caused the pain have passed to the other side of the veil. I have forgiven them and am in therapy for working through the lingering effects of trauma, but I do so with my hands in the Saviors. Their repentance and judgement are through the Savior and I no longer am a part of that conversation, but I do hope they will repent. I am now moving on with a new life as guided by the Savior.

      Many years have passed
Decided to consciously think and work on forgiveness-
So I made a list of names- those I was having trouble with (either mad at / offended by)
Sadly cuz I hadn’t addressed this issue with people -it was a large list….
Then, as I prayed sincerely over each name… (stopping my prayer to write down the whispering of the spirit- per each name)
Which was interesting- because I had never stopped a prayer in the middle of speaking (to write down thoughts) but this prayer was my first time EVER DOING IT THIS WAY…
(I did so for all 10 names on this list)
      When my prayer had ended-
I had a plan for each name on the list…
What a tender moment between and the Lord…
I actually wept after this prayer-
I - began to DO ALL actions that were written beside EACH name…mostly an “apology tour”…. I went to each one…
      NOT expecting anything in return
The Lord is still walking with me and I am still very much a student in this endeavor….
I have seen and felt differences- (also in knowing whom I should forgive and love -but at a distance) letting others love them… where I’m not able to be close….
      Our savior is magnificent!
I received a thoughtful text from one of the names on the list (the relationship had been strained 4 yrs)
Our Father in Heaven knows us All!
      It was a miracle!

I've looked at how abuse and trauma has ripped apart many sections of our family. Although my wife's parents were converts, I'm a 5th generation BIC member of the church, so upbringing doesn't necessarily shield someone from this disillusion.
I had to exercise faith. This is what kept me rooted, despite seeing resentment from friends and family. I do empathize with them, although I choose to remain with the Church and to strengthen my witness and testimony of the Gospel (good news) of Jesus Christ.

If you ever could , take that opportunity to speak to those who do not like you anymore, whether you are guilty or not, try to make the wrong right again, you should feel good about it because you tried to deescalate the problem. Those who judge or speculate are normally wrong and praying for them will always be good, so if you get the opportunity you will know what to say and when to say it, by the inspiration you will receive.. being happy is always a good thing, because people feel your light shines upon them, because of your obedience.

It warms my heart to see so many Catholics, Jews, Muslims, Athiests, Agnostics, Hindus, Buddists, even both Non Denominational and Denominational Christians coming together like this. This truly is Gods church. I used to be a Non Denominational Christian, and I had researched Catholicism, Judaism, I had read the Q'uran and the Bible despite growing up in the LDS Church, I went to Baptist, Lutheran, Presbeterian, Pentecostal, Evangelist, Methodisy and even Protestant Churches. NONE of them brought me peace, although Joyce Meyer and Joel Osteen came very close. I became an athiest after awhile and after that agnostic and I had a spiritual experience that changed my life forever. Christianity pushed me back into Mormonism and after that I converted to Christian Spiritualism which is the idea that all faiths are connected through Christ Jesus. I personally believe the LDS doctrine that, we do becoe like "God" and become "gods" ourselves but these gods are not gods in the sense of a deity. The term "gods" merely means spirit children in modern terms. There is only ONE TRUE GOD. The Greek gods, Allah, Budda, and all other existing "gods" are merely fallen angels that served under the adversary in the pre mortal life or they are humans who became exalted spirits/gods and fell from grace and declared themselves as gods to be worshipped. The Bible even confirms other gods exist but that they hold no real power so as a spiritualist I am open to the idea. If Allah and God are the same person, hey great, but if so Muslim doctrine is mistranslated because scientists have already confirmed in history that Jesus did in fact die on that cross. I however feel either Allah doesn't exist at all, or that he is one of those fallen angels that declared himself a god or he could have been of one the "gods" spoken of in the pearl of great price who helped create the earth. I'm open to anything but based on the fact that Elohim (God of Christianity and Jews) has a completely different doctrine from Allah I seriously doubt they are the same person. Elohim, is a jealous God, has a son, sent his son to die for us, and he is all knowing and all forgiving. Allah however is not jealous, makes us earn forgiveness by good deeds and has no partners and teaches to reject any non Muslims as where Jesus and Elohim teach to love all. Sorry for rambling, I have ADD/ADHD and Asperger's so I tend to over analize things as I am very literal but this is my firm testimony that this is Gods church, that Jesus is the SON of GOD and the Christ and shed his blood for us. When I read the Book of Mormon I KNEW this church was true because I felt no confusion. I always felt confusion when reading the Bible, the Q'uran, The Torah or the lost gospels but I NEVER felt confusion with the Book of Mormon. The Q'uran may be the final gospel, but the Book of Mormon came between the Old and New Testament so it was here long before Islam even existed. It truly is the word of God. I will never again leave this beloved church and am thankful to be LDS.

I'm inspired by President Nelson's persistence in continuously reaching out to the family who harbored anger against him. Many--very likely myself--would give up thinking they had given a good enough effort. That's what Christ (who is the GREAT physician) would've done with any of His patients, and that's what He does with each of us.

President Nelson, I see the love in your eyes for our Savior Jesus Christ, and for us (His flock.) I've watched many Spirit-filled talks you've given, and have felt a STRONG testimony of you as our current living prophet on Earth.

This video’s message was also a common theme from this past weekend’s General Conference. I hope and pray that those who watch this Easter message and many of the Conference talks take to heart what is spoken. It does us no good to hold onto grudges and hurt. A critical part of the Lord's plan entails our progress and continual ability to progress. I have seen how an unforgiving heart can stop an individual's spiritual progress. It really is a poison. It really is as much for the benefit of the one forgiving as it is for the one being forgiven. The scriptures remind us that the ways of the Lord are not our ways. So often what the Lord counsels is counter-intuitive until we practice faith and follow the counsel. Forgiving may seem difficult or challenging, but it can shed a burden we did not even know we were carrying.

For my future I would rather have the peace and the spirit of the Lord then always thinking or saying things that may harm others, even gossip. I will not allow myself to get angry or spread rumors and I can't hate anymore with the help of my savior. I want peace and the spirit of the Lord with me constantly, have inspiration and the Holy Ghost , I cannot do without them anymore. You message is touching and moved Me to thank You with all My heart for it. My oldest Brother from My Mom’s first Marriage passed away when still a Baby from a weak Heart. One of My Nieces works as a Nurse in a Hospital where many kids have terminal illnesses. One of My Sons is a doctor in the Green Beret’s. God has truly blessed You and the world by putting people like You in it. Few people could function in a job that guarantees adversities and devastating heartbreaks without end. People like You give Us hope and sometimes success . I feel at a loss for any words that can assuage the pain and burden You feel. You have done Your best and I know that is quite a lot. God blessed You with a ability to function under great hardships. God teaches us to welcome adversity . The Bible is full of stories about people with troubles. It is the Greatest Book. Its lesson’s are in adversity and heartbreak. By keeping Our Faith through trials and tribulation’s We are closer to God and it is then that We are tested even more.

Something that took a burden off my shoulders and finally allowed me to forgive someone was when I prayed for that person. I was in mid prayer and had an impression that I should pray for this person. I immediately felt like I was replying to the spirit "uggh no!" I felt the person didn't deserve for me to pray for them. Little did I know Heavenly Father was actually trying to help ME. I swallowed my pride and prayed for this person during that prayer. Then something amazing happened. I instantly felt this incredible hurt and anger (that I had held on to for years) just leave me. I couldn't believe it. I was finally able to forgive this person. I felt so much better. I don't believe it will always be instant like that but I do believe praying for the person brings a feeling of sympathy for them even if it's just genuinely knowing that person probably needs all the help they can get. I don't mean that condescendingly. But what President Nelson said here about viewing these people who've wronged us as sons and daughters of Heavenly Father is what helped me bring myself to pray for my tormentor and I truly felt healed of my hurt and anger after my prayer. Our savior's power is truly real and amazing.
