I'm not a critic, I don't claim to be an expert or to have seen a huge amount of movies. I'll just say I've noticed that older movies to me always seem more 'focused' on a subject, even a simple but powerful one. While often movies in recent years - despite great casts or directors - seem to 'want it all' and ultimately don't have anything to say.
In the past movies were made by filmmakers who just wanted to make the best they can. Now, they are box ticking, trying to please demographics and following set rules put in place to achieve a basic enjoyment level. It's the movie 'business' side of things that often ends in a lesser 'product'. I am NOT saying making money from movies is bad but by the numbers box ticking demographics movie making does not make for the best experience.
@@TheycallmeMrWonka you’re not watching the right stuff and not every movie is gonna be a hit. And a movie like Everything Everywhere all at Once shows that a movie can reach for the stars and hit them.
I agree with Alonso’s analysis - this is a good movie in fits and starts with nice individual moments and character interactions, and even some genuinely funny parts. But as a whole it absolutely doesn’t work at all and completely falls off the rails towards the end.
American Hustle was pretty similar. And all of the actors were giving their loudest Acting performances, while each belonging in different films. These days, O'Russell's name is enough to make me wary about seeing a film.
Never thought I’d hear the day where I’m sayin, ‘I’m tired of seeing Margot’. Love her, but she’s becoming a bit overdone. Anya Taylor Joy is also in that same boat.
American Hustle is good. The Fighter is good. Everything else hes done is pretty bad. I Heart Huckabess is BAFFLING. And let’s not forget Accidental Love. The one where Jessica Biel has a nail in her head.
Amsterdam is not so confusing not is it the mess you claim it is. On it's face, it's a murder mystery. And under that genre, I'm not expecting super nuanced performances. Taylor Swift is fine.Chris Rock is....Chris Rock. Washington is likeable and Robie is as magnetic as ever. And to call Bale's performance "a bunch of quirks" is an insult to Bale. There is a tinge of heartbreak to his character. Prosthetics aside, at least he didn't lose or gain a tremendous amount of weight for the role. Amsterdam is a maybe not the knockout you want, but it’s good. And it's fun to continually run into so many talented actors in one story.
Absolutely. There were some choices made here that held it back from being a really great movie, but it’s still better than a lot of mediocre fluff that gets pumped out by the studio system. It’s not as tight as I would have liked and it could have been better but in no scenario would I give this movie a 3 out of 10. It’s a low 7 out of 10.
You did a major disservice to your readers. The movie, from beginning to end, follows exactly one theme. Authoritarians trying to control regular people. Whether white officers trying to get the black soldiers to wear French uniforms because they're not "good enough" to wear the American uniforms, or a high society family trying to keep down the unfortunately Jewish son-in-law. In the end, it turns out these are smaller expressions of the pattern. The larger expression is dictators trying to control the common people. And all throughout the movie, this trio of friends is representing how life can be lived. As the movie verbalizes explicitly over and over: create art and love someone. You are right about one thing. At the end, there is a period where people "stand and declaim" what happened in the movie. In the tradition of Hercule Poirot and Columbo. And for the same reason. If you can't be bothered to engage with the movie enough to understand it, perhaps you should stay home and pot petunias.
well the observations made here are correct. the production and costume design and cinematography are great. the production design captures the period and also gives it right look. For e.g. look at the bush Rami Malek cut in his garden. The costume design is really great. As Christy notes Margot Robbie looks really pretty here. For e.g. she has very sharp features but here the costumes capture her beauty and her mental state really well. Like the white dress when she was a nurse. the black dress when she was unwell. And finally the gown she wore at the climax. just so haute. similarly for the dress of Bale's wife. Plain dresses when she is trying to look submissive but bright colors when she is dominant. Definitely a clap for the man who at 90 designed the costumes. And the cinematographer. Two particular scenes which are captured so well. The scene where one of the characters is pushed under a motor vehicle. Its filmed so well. just like an accident. and secondly the focus on the heels of Margot Robbie when she is having a nervous breakdown. How she is struggling to place her feet is captured by the movement of her heels. Definitely great work by the production designer, costume designer and cinematographer. Their efforts ensure Amsterdam is watchable, if only barely. Clearly outshining the mega cast.
Robbie and Washington had no chemistry because JDW is no Denzel. When are people going to realize he phones it in every time? Margot did her part to try to build some romance, but JDW was dull and charmless. He's good-looking but needs work as an actor imo.
I thought the movie was okay… I liked the individual performances in and of themselves… the story was a mess… it took 15 drafts. The production design, cinematography, costume design is all great. 5/10.

There are thousands of mediocre and down right bad films. This is not in that camp. It is disappointing to have so much talent and not strike gold but it’s still a B+ film (despite its flaws).
so disappointed in the reception to this. i was hoping for a european 'american hustle', but clearly not. what a waste of that ensemble (and $80 million)
If you made a movie about how Fascism was a global phenomenon not limited to Germany, and it was backed by big money interests, no one would go to see it. So, they wrapped that story in a character story that conceals the true point of the movie. They took some very deep concepts, and wrapped it in a sugary story about three friends who reunited after a decade apart, and the challenges they face. But, that's not what the movie is really about.
Great review as always, but when are you doing your spoiler review for Don’t Worry Darling? I can’t be the only one worried how Florence gets out of the bed.
Man first I waste my time with Adam McKay and “Don’t Look Up” and now I gotta put up with this. Next time I see a film with a star studded cast and an acclaimed director at the helm I might not even bother.
This may be one of the most soap-boxy, left-pandering, over-expository movies ever made. I was STUNNED how many times characters repeat the same information, just to make SURE their braindead audience can keep up. That ending with Christian Bale on pain meds just narrating everything he's witnessing (which just ends up being a Wikipedia plot summary, in function) was one of the most embarrassing scenes I have ever sat through. I hope for David O'Russell that the INSANE exposition was a product of studio interference; if not, I dread whatever he makes next, if he hasn't been cancelled by then.

The cast, director and DP alone had my interest, but I’ll safely skip it. I do have a comment about this being Emmanuel Lubezki’s ugliest looking movie: Just want to remind people he shot “The Cat in the Hat”
And is nobody going to say that the movie addresses what the American people are most concerned about at the present moment? Really? Nobody? The movie is about authoritarian dictators. Hello? Whether you view the threat as being from Biden or from Trump, that is what we are most concerned about. And the movie has it dead in its sights.
Agreed, AH had all the same issues. None of the characters felt like people, the actors all belonged in different films from each other, the performances were incredibly desperate, and the plot made me want to stop watching the film and just look up a Wikipedia article on what really happened.

Not her fault! She's barely in it.
I liked the movie…it’s a type of movie, we’re a writer is trying to tell us a message…u just have to dig it out.
It's like a very long, very bad, SNL skit 🙃
Ha!
An amazing cast and none of them had to wear their underwear on the outside of their tights, maybe just for that I'll check it out. 🤣
What does that mean?
Now you know how some of us felt with American Hustle whilst you guys were praising it to high heaven. I saw the same issues with that film.
AH was a terrible film that got high praise. At the time I thought I was being punk'd.
@@angelthman1659 you had to commit, see it in the theatre, it falls flat on a TV
@@cjwright79 Saw it in the theater.
Agreed, AH had all the same issues. None of the characters felt like people, the actors all belonged in different films from each other, the performances were incredibly desperate, and the plot made me want to stop watching the film and just look up a Wikipedia article on what really happened.
It is one giant turd……. Pass…save your money…
