  • Father (1888-1964) and son (1927-1980) Neuhaus play Mozarts Sonata for two pianos, KV 448 in D major
    1. Allegro con spirito
    2. Andante 10:47
    3. Molto allegro 20:17
    Recorded in 1950
The wonderful cantabile and phrasing in the second movement make up some slips in the first and last movement...

Absolutely lovely, love the tempo of the 3rd movement, sounds a lot like the Richter/Britten version

I remembered that I've read a very nice episode about their (Heinrich and Stanislav) joint concert for two pianos, that I am going to write here. It was written as a memory of Stanislav's wife Galina. One day she jopined their concert tour as a follower, and visited Riga. And they did rehearsal in the morning at a place where they gave a concert in the night. They played pieces for two pianos, but then they noticed that one of pianos were "useless", some keys were too stiff.

I grew up on this recording, and it remains the only performance of this piece I know to this day, so don't think it ever registered with me that the occasional dissonance in the exterior movements are finger slips. For me it couldn't be any more magical.

Stanislav became depressed and his father got angry about it. Then they started an argument, just to offer nicer piano for each other. In the end they decided to cancel the concert, Galina was disappointed and went for stroll and Heinrich and his son went beds to have a rest. When Galina returned from a stroll, she found them in a good mood, with a chess game. Heinrich said "we will play that 'broken tub' tonight pointedly!" Galina says the concert was quite successful and

Although the playing is not always fully clean or together in the outer movements, there is some delectable fingerwork and bags of energy, and, yes, the Andante is truly lovely, played with beautiful balance and phrasing, and an elegant coda. (But are you sure that the two pianists are not Dezső Ránki and Zoltán Kocsis ... ??!!)
