I just played the soniscape to try to block out my neighbor’s subwoofer. The subwoofer is winning. I hate heavy bass. People who live in apartments need to realize they are not the only ones in the vicinity and shut the heck up.
Try Boombuster. Worked great for me. You'll need a bass speaker to wash out the other bass noise. I have a portable Bose Bluetooth speaker and it has enough thump to do the trick.
sub-woofers should not be legal in accommodation which is not detached. It should be written into leases / sales and more easy to switch off from the tv.
Thank you for this (and other) very informative video about your Soniscape recording. Like many people, I too have had my share of "bad neighbours" and such, but what really was the issue was my hyper-sensitive hearing. Without going into too many détails, suffice it to say that sometime in the late 90s or early Y2K, I actually designed my own little "Soniscape" series of recordings, meant of course to help block out the undesireable noises produced by outside interférences. In my case, and as you appropriately mentionned in this video, the problem came in low-frequency noises such as loud bangs and thuds, which disrupted my sleep for numerous years. After I made my own recordings (which were essentially series of sound frequencies mixed together) principally of low-frequencies as well, I have been using these to help me sleep for numerous years now, with great success. I have found through conversations with people that most seem immune to the "noise pollution" generated by others, something which I have always found strange seeing as how what passed as "normal" noise for most was quite "unbearable" for me. The idea of ear plugs and such works decently for high-to-some mid frequencies but don't do anything for the lower frequencies. I guess most people are accustomed to door slams and foot stomps, and only consider "inconsiderate" neighbour behaviour as being loud music or parties. Finally, I have also noticed that we are living in an increasingly louder society (North America). Not only have stereo reproducing devices become much louder (read: hyper-bass-boost!), but we are also subjected to more noise (levels) than ever, be it from automated voice recordings in elevators, public transits, and Subway systems, which also appear to be elevating the levels to "counter-act" against how people are paying more attention to their speaker-phone conversations in public than which station should they be getting off at!This always reminded me of an old example we have here in our "metropolis", where one person not speaking the same language as the other person would result in said person just repeating the non-understandable words or phrases more loudly... As if screaming at somebody in a different language would result in a better understanding.Anyway, thank you for the great information provided, and of course, for the empathy in having lived such situations which have resulted in a creative way of counter-balance.
Just downloaded this as I am desperate to find some way of blocking out my awful upstairs neighbours, who stomp and bang and thud and then do it deliberately when you do it back! Here's hoping it works, although I really object to having to resort to this in my own home! They set off my migraines now because it's started at 3am and interrupts my deepest sleep cycle :(
i just bought Soniscape two days ago from iTunes, and it`s just great, the noises from my above neighbor really disappeared, spicily the footsteps noise, its like magic, and the Soniscape it self is really smooth and relaxing, far better than white or pink noise which is somehow worked with me but its not smooth and gives headaches. thank you so much for this great solution for the noisy neighbors. greetings from Austria.
Stephen, thank you tons for your work on behalf of all tortured tenants, suffering with inhuman neighbors. My situation is quite unusual and I would like to know if anyone else is tortured with extremely loud, pounding footsteps from neighbors in the DOWNSTAIRS apartment. I could never have been prepared for something like this, since I moved into a top floor apartment a month ago. The troll below me constantly pounds his feet and it is most akin to listening to off and on hammering throughout the day and night (he likes to pace sometimes till 4:30 in the morning). Here I am in a very large apartment, approximately 16 feet above him with a substantial floor between our respective apartments, and I can still hear his pounding footsteps. Stephen my question for you is that I like to relax in the evening hours and watch TV; would it be possible to listen to your soundscape CD with the TV on at the same time?
I used to have to deal with noisy neighbors, we had the answer.........we decided to buy a 🏡 in a quiet rural area. It 100% worked, heck there aren’t streetlights out here. That my friends is serenity at its finest.💯
I love the story and motivation behind this... from someone who has been through the thick of it and knows it takes some low tones to drown out the bullshit. Love the channel. Out of nowhere (pretty as much as I started working from home a year and a half ago, of course), there has been a constant rotation of people who just pull up right below, above, or even behind, and have their subwoofer "sesh" shaking our walls (and worse, our nerves), anywhere from 10 minutes to 6 hours. The only hours that seem to be free of this are 4-5:50 AM. 5 white machines, failure to recoup and get my health issues under control, and feeling like *WE'RE* the lunatics when we snap and lose it (or blast circus music to "fight back", etc). Most places, it's usually one or two bad apples pissing off everyone else, but now we're literally surrounded by a constant rotation of this shit, alone in it. We can't be the only ones losing sanity over this, can we? Not even in an apartment, there's a brick house close below that slams their door so hard it shakes the entire downstairs of our house (a long house too), even though the houses aren't even connected. Before last year, it was never this bad. There'd be the usual drive-by stuff that was annoying, but holy hell. It almost seems like they're a hivemind with this stuff, they are so in sync with their habits. There will be a few days with nothing, where you think, "holy shit, I can actually study and work!?" and then the next day 10 instances. This year we were driven to add security cameras, and within *five days* it caught shady stuff. Within a few days of me yelling into the void through the walls about having a work meeting interrupted while they fuck around all day, the cam picked up some shady "characters" prowling around my front porch. Other's have decided to use our steps as their personal park bench. It's a god damn nightmare. With Winter coming, I get to be back out there on the street shoveling snow amongst them, but luckily most of them don't bother. Fun times. It never used to be like this. Anyhow, I will definitely be trying your track, WITH my subwoofer of course (that I always made sure stays within my own walls so far, because there's enough of that here). On that note, do you think your Instant Karma Machine could be rigged for the subwoofing stuff in front of my house? I have some mics and a delay or two laying around. (Ironic, reading through the comments, how many musicians are victims of this nonsense). I have some odd (apparently undiagnosable by any doctor who I've seen) neurological issues. I was reminded of one of those oddities in particular: Some years ago, I developed this issue where any time a diesel truck/giant pickup would be rumbling up the hill or down the street, even if I could barely audibly hear it (or had noise masking on and couldn't hear it at all), my left eardrum would start spasming. Like a full blown muscle spasm. It was bizarre. It just started out of the blue. After a couple years, that particular issue just disappeared. It was only that specific frequency that would set it off too, not even the bullshit shelf shaking bass did it. The doctors just threw Ativan at any of those issues, so it's an unsolved mystery. Seeing your comment about Lyme down below, though. That is a possibility for me too, as some of my other stuff started within a week of a hike in the Midwest.
I don't know if it's related to your problem, but I suffered from hyperacousis for a long time, and I got natural sensitive earing. I know those spasms, and also experienced tinitus. 2 main things helped me, first was health hygiene, by cutting sugar, sodas, and even carbonated water. Sleeping well (haha...), doing some physical exercises, the basic healthy stuff. The second was to realise the psychological aspect of sound trauma. Just like your stomach will produce more gastric juice if you are stressed, your ear as an organ can act on recurrent agression. The physical aspect is here to keep you moving, but as you lose strenght, your body will get triggered to known aggressions, or what looks like it. Think PTSD acted by your body parts. No idea if it helps, but that's an option. I'm currently living the neighboors nightmare again and my symptoms are back as days go, hence why I ended here. Need to try sleeping the head in the speakers.
Wait, so you cancel out noise by making more dissonant noise? How does that help when you are basically replacing horrid noise with a different horrid noise?
I don't think most people consider waterfalls and such as horrid noise... But maybe if you understand how deodorant works, you can wrap your head around this concept... By taking armpit stank and covering it up with fragrant oils like peppermint you mask the foul odor with a pleasant one. It doesn't remove the B.O. smell, but the peppermint fragrance will cover the B.O. and in most cases nobody will notice the stank.
just bought the 7.77 audio ... do you add white noise to the sound ... hopefully not ??? - i couple the soniscape with 2 layers of thunder sounds because thats the annoying sound my neighbor makes ... loud thumping ... the thunder blends their annoying thunder sounding noises and it has given a lot of mental relief yay
There are laws, there's just few if any who enforce them... Soniscape will cancel bass if played at a slightly higher volume and you have speakers that will reproduce those low frequencies. Few inexpensive systems are capable of that. Pro gear will do it. The only catch is that once you go below 20hz the human ear can no longer hear it, but the body can still feel it.
if you didn't want to use your computer or iphone to send the Soniscape to the speakers and subwoofer, what other type of device could you use with the speakers and subwoofer AND what type of hookup ports would this device need to have in order to plug the speakers and subwoofer into it. Also, is the mp3 and 10 hr Soundscape possible to play in a device other than a computer?
@@BrettHoustonTube Brett, could you talk a bit about this situation..... lets say i buy the speakers and subwoofer, how would the hookups work? i'm assuming you'd need a device to play Soundscape on that enabled the speakers and subwoofer to plug into it? what type of ports would your device need to have to accept the speakers and subwoofer?
Mighty dwarf makes a transducer that has an MP3 player built into it I bought one to experiment with and it ended up malfunctioning on me so in my experience it was not very dependable but it worked quite well when it worked It’s a very small unit and uses whatever material you place it on as a soundboard For example if you set it on the night table it will make the entire night table vibrate to produce the sound like a speaker If you place it on the wall it will vibrate the wall which could be ideal in situation‘s with Neighbor noise
Well there are many variables as far as connections and devices. Typically there are adapters and such that will bridge the gaps. If you get a subwoofer speaker set made for computers they are typically a 3.5MM headphone style connection. I would avoid anything wireless or Bluetooth because it uses the same freq as a microwave oven... That's not healthy especially for long term use while sleeping. A bass guitar amplifier will do the trick but you may need an adapter to run it from a computer, phone or mp3 player. I am using a JBL Eon pa speaker at the moment and it works well. Otherwise I use a KRK subwoofer and speaker set driven by a separate amp...
@@BrettHoustonTube Brett, I wish you knew how deeply appreciative I am that you provided these details - I plan to use them as I create this unique sound environment. It has been a nightmare in apt living with certain folks and my previous attempts to remediate could often be disappointing. I work creatively and appreciate your online sites - love the tree pic with the eyes- Will point people to your work - Again, you're a lifesaver!
I live in Canada, and I own a house.....well, almost. I'm also a musician (40+ years) and sometimes I have to suffer hearing my neighbour's bass frequencies.....no way to mix music or even concentrate in my own space......I appreciate your thoughts regarding masking sounds and frequencies but I'm thinking perhaps the good old USA 2nd amendment might work better in this case....unfortunately it's illegal in Canada......but a well placed 12 or 16 gauge could solve a lot of problems! BTW, love your style!.....cheers!
Or just noise ordinances and the police actually doing their job. Or did they make it illegal to call the police on noise complaints in Canada like they did where I live?
I've become fed up with my neighbours.. since my new landlord took over he has moved two different tenants in above me who are ridiculously rude and loud intentionally trying to bother me with stomping, dragging and dropping large objects and knocking on my ceiling.. I hit my ceiling a couple weeks ago for them to only sit there and knock on it for about five minutes and laugh.. so I am really hoping your soniscape works at least a bit..
"...my upstairs neighbours, a family of five, weighing average 500 pounds each, with a basketball net in their living room -and they used it..." ...oh dear -I laughed at that! -must have been horrible though! -thank you for sharing your invention -I downloaded flac file from CD Baby few days ago -too early to tell, but I'm confident...
Out of curiosity, is it known what long term effects are associated to sleeping on a constant background sound level? Masking, if i understood correctly, requires adding additional "energy" at all audible frequency bands. Yes, you most likely reduce the cognitive "surprise" from hearing sounds with a meaning. I tried something similar but it felt like sleeping on a plane: constant white-noise. It was very tiring for me. Can't you perform noise cancellation at the room level, given where your head is located?
That is a great question. I thought about that a lot since I was the crash-test dummy during research and development. I used all natural sounds one would normally hear in the wilderness. When sleeping outside in a place like Yosemite you naturally hear water flowing, crickets chirping, wind blowing, rain falling and such. So by design we are not harmed by constant exposure to these sounds. Now they are not exactly being used in the same sense considering how important frequencies are, that is the grey area. It greatly depends on the volume levels. If you play it over 128 decibels for prolonged periods, like any sound at that level, it will cause hearing damage. But if played at safe levels should not cause any issues. I have been sleeping with this most every night for well over a decade with no adverse reactions.
Bosch has taken this idea with Sleepbuds, modified earplugs that carry an audio track. Soniscape sounds very much like 'Rinse', a popular track. Bosch also has simple harmonies that fill your ears with golden tranquil sounds, and make you look forward to sleep instead of dreading it. Cost is about $AU300.00, not cheap, but stopped me from bailing up my partying neighbor, every Saturday, 2.30 am. Nice!
What about the vibrations from the thumping from upstairs? How does one block that? Sound isn’t the only issue, vibrations from things like subwoofers and heavy walking keep me awake from my terrible neighbors in my apartment building. I have upstairs neighbors who slam doors, walk heavy, run in the halls, and have never met a floor they don’t like to slap their feet across. The sound isn’t the worst part. It’s the shaking of the building, and the vibrations.
Well, Soniscape can only mask those down to 20 Hz we can physically hear. Beyond that our body can feel the vibrations. Having a neighbor above you is like being in a giant drum and they are jumping on the drum head. The sounds below are much more intense as the ceiling and walls reverberate. And if you make a recording most of that will not be picked up by the microphones so it's hard to relay this experience to others.
Hello Brett Thank you for Soniscape Noisy inconsiderate neighbours are a real pain I use a looped recording of a large industrial fan to aid sleep White noise rescues my sanity ....sometimes I want to lock my flat and run away The walls in my flat are extremely thin
+BrettHoustonTube Hello again Brett Just listening to you discussing Soniscape I can hear the sense of trauma in your voice from your experience If I had my way flats would have to be sound proof It is a shame no one has managed to create head phones suitable for sleeping in Bed phones are too fragile and break eventually luckily I haven't wasted money on those I have my computer hooked up to two small speakers and the white noise helps I listen through headphones when I am up and about
Stephen, understanding we all must live in situations that may or may not be comfortable, I find your statement " I can hear the sense of trauma in your voice from your experience" uncomfortable.
Had a neighbour who was an actual crackhead. His schedule was the complete opposite of mine. I would get home from work around 6, just as I could hear him getting up. An hour later his idiot friends would arrive and then the music would start (radio). All night, every night for 4 months I endured this shit until I ordered a 5 watt radio transmitter. When you are within 10 feet of a radio, all you need to do is turn the transmitter on and it'll walk all over anything regardless of what its tuned to. The static was so loud they would turn it off. I'd turn it on any time I heard music day or night and piss myself laughing. Fuck me? ......no....fuck you.
I don't think so. I'll double check with the distributor and consider possible making it available there in the future. Unless you have hifi speakers with a subwoofer hooked up to Alexa it won't be effective since it doesn't produce those low frequencies otherwise.
Hey does anyone know if this will work for door slamming? The person (including visitors/guests) is slamming the door to the apartment (not an inside door). And/or they're letting it slam shut. Thanks in advance either way. I'm on the autism spectrum(Asperger's syndrome) & I have C-PTSD.
question if the spl is 100 to 130 and have heart palpatations, head hurts, ears hurt and can't do anything its two neighbors on either side and the low intense base is killing me. called the cops but their machine cant pick it up and the base waves are damaging my body, does the masking music stop the damage the bass frequences cause to the body?
Sounds like it could be reactions to microwave energy. Do you have a wifi router? Use Bluetooth? Or close to a cell tower? bretthouston.com/creations/microwave-radiation-can-cause-zombies-prions/
There is a cell phone tower about a mile down the road. I have a wifi router that stays in my living room. I have had that about 5 years. This only happens at night when they play low intense bass music. The feeling of my head being fried only happens on weekends around 3am. i was think it might be infared music pointed at my bedroom window. I thought about buying a piece of tin and setting it in my window to see if it will maybe reflect it back to them.
Hi Bret. I have living upstairs from me a demogorgon. Will soniscape cancel out the crunch of poor peoples skulls as demogorgon bites down effortlessly? Or when he’s picking out tissue and tendons between his teeth with a femur. But that’s about it. Nothing else here bothers me. Just the demogorgon upstairs. Thank you so much, B Reed
If you have a strong sound system with a full-range subwoofer it likely will cover all those crunching sounds and screams since they are mostly mid-range-high frequencies. The rumbling and stomping of hoofs is a little more challenging since it's typically in the low range.
I just knew you were a cool dude Brett. Your idea is actually pretty brilliant. And the added delay. Very nice. My wife and my 6 year old daughter think I’m nuts, but I swear, our neighbors upstairs. Well, there’s two up there, but I think it’s just one of them who has devoted their precious time to hone in on their canine sense of hearing to let me know that they know exactly what square foot of the apartment I’m in. They are very good at hide n seek. I don’t have any fun toys physically like you do. But! I do have an addiction to the App Store on my iPhone. I think you could make some gnarly sounds with a Moog model 15 or even an Animoog. Some synthy stuff. I don’t know what I’m saying. Hey, God bless you and your family. I would pray that the Lord pour His blessings down on you and family. Take care pal.
Thanks for the kind words Bud. You can crank this ruclips.net/video/LXc6VeYa7LY/видео.html if you want to rattle their cage and soothe your mind at the same time. Ya need a subwoofer to really feel it. Either way, good luck with your monsters!
This is off topic, but I couldn't help by notice the Stickley Mission style bedroom set. I had the same one, and the livingroom set as well. I was a Frank Lloyd Wright follower when I was a highschool freshman, consequently I discovered Gustav Stickley as well. Craftsman style is my favorite.
Interesting. I'm not sure about the furniture. This was filmed at a rental cabin in the woods of Idyllwild, years ago, right before we were evacuated for a big wildfire.
+hasan hamied That is what I designed it for. But there are many things that effectiveness depends on. The sound system you play it on is most important. You need a subwoofer or something that can reproduce the low bass frequencies well.
I want to try this - my neighbours are actually pretty quiet but the odd 2am drop of furniture or boxes wakes me up and then I have trouble falling back to sleep. How effective is SoniScape with this? I try RUclips white noise recordings but that doesn't really help even with earplugs.
OMG! I found you because I have neighbors that are driving me nuts with the rumbling that comes through the walls....In NORTH HOLLYWOOD! How weird. I'm going to try writing them a letter before I try any revenge tactics, but I love that you came up with this! I'll look you up again in case I don't get a good response.
So I live in a big apartment complex, my neighbour likes bass heavy entertainment usually all day and night, masking that would mean me going lower ranges right? And if I go lower ranges would I disturb my other neighbours instead? My noisy neighbour is left wall, quiet neighbours above and opposite wall. Actually above not so quiet but it doesn't bother me
Yeah, that's a tough one. You need a bass capable system to neutralize that and your neighbors will possibly hear it, although the sound of Soinscape is preferable so they might not mind.
I have problem with my neighbor playing loud music. I call the police and Complain to the apt manager and they say they take care of it. But my neighbor is still playing loud music, tv loud. Sometime she do it on purpose. She play music, tv in the morning 2,3 a.m and 8, 10 in the morning and at night too. You will be shock it not even a young person like me. A lady who old enough to be my mom who doing all this. I need one of these to record my neighbor.
Stopping a neighbors sound noise (music, movies, yelling) is relatively easy these days. Problem is there are two aspects to stomping the part that's easy and the part that sucks, which is vibration. Vibrations created in structures due to noise are bad enough, but you are dealing with a kinetic vibration made from the act of stomping which can be amplified by flooring and sub flooring that can also pass down common walls and structural beams and especially beams that share the same electrical outlet positioning floor to floor those outlet boxes if not insulated are paths for that vibration to carry any and all sound. have you ever noticed that sometimes while someone is stomping and yelling at someone you can hear the yelling more clearly even if it is the same volume as times prior with no stomping. It's because the kinetic vibration can and does carry the vibrations of other sounds that would normally dissipate or dampen with it. Actual physical vibrations must be canceled or absorbed structurally as they cant be fixed by using a sound frequency to mask or cancel it only the sound that the kinetic vibration makes during its occurrence and any sounds that piggy back. Kinetic vibration involves a physical impact. You have to be able to soften or absorb the impact of the blow to accomplish anything. Best of luck, because that's always expensive, time consuming or both.
If this wouldnt work then i have a idea for you all.1. Put a box against a wall (Doesnt really matter wich kind of box)2. Download this track and play it trough those boxes. ( www.mediafire.com/file/p0ljb9gvq8meof0/Bass_sound_file.mp3 )3. Your neighbors will get annoyed by the sound and they will search for it where it comes from, it vibrates the whole room thats next to the wall that your sending to it.4. Get a nice day and enjoy the neighbours being silent :)
BrettHoustonTube It does :) However I'm a little concerned about whether or not it is damaging my ears when I use headphones. My neighbor is very noisy and inconsiderate, so the volume is normally set pretty high..
TooK Kat Yeah, I was worried about that too initially. From what I understand damage can occur at volume levels above 140 decibels. They consider 128-140 db the "threshold of pain". So as a guide if you are in pain, it can be damaging. For a reference a jet engine is around 140 db. You can also measure sound waves with a decibel meter. Radio Shack used to make them, you can probably find em cheap on Ebay. I have been using it for years with no noticeable damage. I often sleep with a feather pillow over my head to reduce the soundwaves. I have had my ears damaged by ear plugs while sleeping so I don't do that anymore.
It should be the same quality on CD as if you play the MP3 from a computer or ipod etc, it all depends on the process you use to burn it though. There is a difference in quality though between an mp3 from iTunes and the WAV files used to make the cds since MP3s are highly compressed.
+hymlen v I typically play my Soniscape at 60db now I live in a peaceful place in the woods. It's enough to cover the trash truck in the morning, the motorcycles that race through the canyon or the raccoons that run across the roof at 3am. You can download a free decibel meter app for your phone and have a better idea of ranges.
The Altec unit I have is the ACS340. It goes down to 30hz and is a great price if you can find one. Amazon has a few. Brett Houston Tube Thank you. I found something by accident meanwhile: Trust Tytan 2.1. The specs say that it goes down to 20hz. It seems incredible for that price. Will it be audible enough? www.trust.com/en/product/19019-tytan-2-1-subwoofer-speaker-set-black
I just listened to your soundtrack. It would be nice to have a constant tone of the frequency that is closest to the doorslams. I think the doorslams are about 30-35 hz. Which program can create these tones?
You need to be certain your speakers are reproducing those low frequencies. Soniscape will produce them. You can download apps for your phone that will show the freq ranges. To be accurate you need a pro model and an external microphone. I'm not sure what you mean by wobbling, Soniscape is as constant as natural track can be. Aside from that a door slam will produce vibration below what the human ear can hear, yet your body will still feel it. That is a very tough one there.
My neighbors are horrible and loud also. Most evenings they have 'yard parties' and 20-30 people gather for music, dancing and swap-out sexual orgy parties and go at it right their on the front lawn everyone can see this large group of multiracial multi sexual multi-aged group nearly 50 in total for nearly 12 hours each evening and they play hip-hop with a mix of jazz music mixed in. It's bat shit crazy and the cops just shrug their shoulders and say "you know we can do nothing to those kind of people....they are protected....sorry." And we're like what the hell is this?
A 455nm wavelength 5 watt Blue LASER with a collimator (a 10X magnification small telescope to make the beam around 10 times more parallel at great distances) co-axially mounted with a high magnification riflescope or a terrestrial high magnification telescope on a tripod works great from many miles away. The crosshairs of the scope should be aligned beforehand to that the LASER dot will be directly centered say a mile away or more or so. It could clear out a problem very quickly when one presses a button though one has to use it for a very short amount of time and make a quick getaway when the authorities are called. Of course this won't work unless you have a line of sight to the target. Don't ever do this though it's just for information purposes otherwise it is a crime and can carry severe consequences if your apprehended. I would never do this of course instead of breaking laws I just circumvent them like using high powered massive arrays of blue LED lights to temporarily blind the nuisance and violent aggressive dangerous thug orcs in my neighborhood.
Try your neighbor pounding on the air return in the common wall. It vibrates all metal around it. Bed springs furniture springs. It is THE MOST INSANE THING IVE EVER EXPERIENCED! ASSAULT BY AIR RETURN. I have gotten lumps in my left breast and it has caused me to lose weight unwanted. I would not believe it if I WAS NOT EXPERIENCING IT! HELP PLEASE?!
I really thought that the noise that this produced was not pleasant, Brett. I have a suggestion for you. Croqui frogs. They are on the Big Island of Hawaii and you could use that sound.
Well it is designed to mask noise while sleeping not be a pretty nature soundtrack. Most people find waterfalls soothing. Croaking frogs are not constant, so as a noise masking source it is not effective since you will hear the noise between croaks.
No, Brett, it is not croaking frogs. It is Croqui frogs. Check out how they sound on RUclips and there is "no noise between the croaks." Please check it out and then tell me what you think. I lived on the Big Island and the sound of these particular frogs is deafening. It is amazing what you can get used to.
This deodorant analogy makes me laugh. But I can vouch that masking sound like this works. I have been using a box fan in the bedroom but I have used BWE and other types of music and sounds from videos on YT. The type of sound matters to our nervous system for sure. Besides, it also helps the psyche when we feel like we have some semblance of control in regard to what we listen to.
That depends on sound pressure/volume levels. Anything beyond 120-140 decibels (threshold of pain) can cause damage long term. If you are sleeping with noise you already have a concern in this respect. There are free apps you can get to measure sound levels. A simple rule to follow is if you feel pain, it's too loud. Soniscape is composed of all natural sounds. At safe levels it will not cause any more damage than sleeping next to a waterfall.
I think the 👮 need to help us. mine turn it around and make it my fault??? other neighbors won't sign a complaint form because these people are Drug Dealers. I think 👮 are scared of them???? I have all kinds of complaint forms filled out by people that have heard it in my home. But because the 👮 don't want to hear it, they will not do anything. I am loosing my hearing in my left ear over this!!!!! on nerve meds. I have had state employees hear this but the 👮 won't except it!!!!! I am 63 and own my home. They are buying theirs.
Same problem 4 years of heavy bass L.F.N from what sounds like fans and heat pumps probable illegal grow op police and housing officials do nothing as the concerned neighbours are drunken dysfunctional problematic non working wasters but i have had 30 years of their dysfunctional behaviour wish i moved out years ago but no way out now ...
I just played the soniscape to try to block out my neighbor’s subwoofer. The subwoofer is winning. I hate heavy bass. People who live in apartments need to realize they are not the only ones in the vicinity and shut the heck up.
That's when you call the cops
Try Boombuster. Worked great for me. You'll need a bass speaker to wash out the other bass noise. I have a portable Bose Bluetooth speaker and it has enough thump to do the trick.
Do you have a subwoofer? It's crucial to masking. The one with the biggest subwoofer wins!

Cool, thanks for sharing your experience!
Just downloaded this as I am desperate to find some way of blocking out my awful upstairs neighbours, who stomp and bang and thud and then do it deliberately when you do it back! Here's hoping it works, although I really object to having to resort to this in my own home! They set off my migraines now because it's started at 3am and interrupts my deepest sleep cycle :(
How did it work out? Are you still in the same place?
i just bought Soniscape two days ago from iTunes, and it`s just great, the noises from my above neighbor really disappeared, spicily the footsteps noise, its like magic, and the Soniscape it self is really smooth and relaxing, far better than white or pink noise which is somehow worked with me but its not smooth and gives headaches.
thank you so much for this great solution for the noisy neighbors.
greetings from Austria.
Thanks Hasan, so nice to hear it helped!
Not all heroes wear capes, this man has been through hell lol
Stephen my question for you is that I like to relax in the evening hours and watch TV; would it be possible to listen to your soundscape CD with the TV on at the same time?
it sounds like that's not a concrete slab, is it wooden joists and floorboards? find a brick apartment building with concrete slab floors
I used to have to deal with noisy neighbors, we had the answer.........we decided to buy a 🏡 in a quiet rural area. It 100% worked, heck there aren’t streetlights out here. That my friends is serenity at its finest.💯
I wish I was able to do the same
Great work! All you need is this masking track on Bose QuietComfort 20 noise cancelling earbuds. This combination will block (nearly) everything.
I was reminded of one of those oddities in particular:
Some years ago, I developed this issue where any time a diesel truck/giant pickup would be rumbling up the hill or down the street, even if I could barely audibly hear it (or had noise masking on and couldn't hear it at all), my left eardrum would start spasming.
Brett LMAO!
just bought the 7.77 audio ... do you add white noise to the sound ... hopefully not ??? - i couple the soniscape with 2 layers of thunder sounds because thats the annoying sound my neighbor makes ... loud thumping ... the thunder blends their annoying thunder sounding noises and it has given a lot of mental relief yay
Thanks.
There is no computer white noise added. It's all free-range, organic, nature sounds.
nothing cancels out the damn bass thumping. should be laws against it.
Where do u buy it
CDBaby, Amazon, iTunes and such.
It certainly helps.
Wow. Nice to hear you had some justice in the end.
if you didn't want to use your computer or iphone to send the Soniscape to the speakers and subwoofer, what other type of device could you use with the speakers and subwoofer AND what type of hookup ports would this device need to have in order to plug the speakers and subwoofer into it. Also, is the mp3 and 10 hr Soundscape possible to play in a device other than a computer?
An MP3 player might work
@@BrettHoustonTube Brett, could you talk a bit about this situation..... lets say i buy the speakers and subwoofer, how would the hookups work? i'm assuming you'd need a device to play Soundscape on that enabled the speakers and subwoofer to plug into it? what type of ports would your device need to have to accept the speakers and subwoofer?
Mighty dwarf makes a transducer that has an MP3 player built into it
I bought one to experiment with and it ended up malfunctioning on me so in my experience it was not very dependable but it worked quite well when it worked
It’s a very small unit and uses whatever material you place it on as a soundboard
For example if you set it on the night table it will make the entire night table vibrate to produce the sound like a speaker
If you place it on the wall it will vibrate the wall which could be ideal in situation‘s with Neighbor noise
A friend sent me the link to your video. I sympathise so much. My neighbours are assholes. I bought a violin. They're really quiet now ;)
Are you seriious?
"...my upstairs neighbours, a family of five, weighing average 500 pounds each, with a basketball net in their living room -and they used it..."
...oh dear -I laughed at that!
I have been sleeping with this most every night for well over a decade with no adverse reactions.
why did you keep changing camera angles
That's a typical interview filming format.
Is this available on ITunes?..thanks
Yes
Hello Brett
Thank you for Soniscape
Noisy inconsiderate neighbours are a real pain
I use a looped recording of a large industrial fan to aid sleep
White noise rescues my sanity ....sometimes I want to lock my flat and run away
The walls in my flat are extremely thin
+Stephen Holmes Thanks Stephen. I know what you mean. I would go camping as often as possible when I was trapped in my neighbor "situation".
+BrettHoustonTube
Hello again Brett
Just listening to you discussing Soniscape I can hear the sense of trauma in your voice from your experience
If I had my way flats would have to be sound proof
It is a shame no one has managed to create head phones suitable for sleeping in
Bed phones are too fragile and break eventually luckily I haven't wasted money on those
I have my computer hooked up to two small speakers and the white noise helps
I listen through headphones when I am up and about
Stephen,
understanding we all must live in situations that may or may not be comfortable, I find your statement " I can hear the sense of trauma in your voice from your experience" uncomfortable.
@@stephenholmes5387 bosch sleepbuds are designed to be slept in.
That's an excellent idea.
You can even transmit other music they don't like to walk all over their system.
Will that work if my neighbor is playing music to a speaker via Bluetooth instead of radio? I'm desperate for peace and quiet!
@innercores1266 Just tray, it is worth it 😅 right?
Do you have tracks on Amazon to be played on Alexa?
I don't think so. I'll double check with the distributor and consider possible making it available there in the future.
Unless you have hifi speakers with a subwoofer hooked up to Alexa it won't be effective since it doesn't produce those low frequencies otherwise.
@@BrettHoustonTube thank you
Hey does anyone know if this will work for door slamming? The person (including visitors/guests) is slamming the door to the apartment (not an inside door). And/or they're letting it slam shut.
Thanks in advance either way. I'm on the autism spectrum(Asperger's syndrome) & I have C-PTSD.
A soundproof drywall called
Quietrock.
A soundproof insulation called Roxul Safe and Sound.
Resilient channel.
Does the Roxul Safe and sound insulation work well?
Yes they work. specially if combine it with quiet rock drywall.
question if the spl is 100 to 130 and have heart palpatations, head hurts, ears hurt and can't do anything its two neighbors on either side and the low intense base is killing me. called the cops but their machine cant pick it up and the base waves are damaging my body, does the masking music stop the damage the bass frequences cause to the body?
Thank you so much,
B Reed
Do you have a link where I can get Sonicscape?
Sure. www.cdbaby.com/cd/bretthouston
CD Baby, or iTunes are the easiest.
Yes thank you, I wasn't done watching your video and was already convinced... Saw the link in the video near the end. Thank you brother.! :)
Why don't you post links? I know you flashed them on the screen but I like to copy & paste things.
Thanks for pointing that out. Here's one.
bretthouston.com/creations/soniscape/
I'll add one in the description as well.
is Soniscape effective with footsteps noise from above neighbors ?
+hasan hamied That is what I designed it for. But there are many things that effectiveness depends on. The sound system you play it on is most important. You need a subwoofer or something that can reproduce the low bass frequencies well.
I want to try this - my neighbours are actually pretty quiet but the odd 2am drop of furniture or boxes wakes me up and then I have trouble falling back to sleep. How effective is SoniScape with this? I try RUclips white noise recordings but that doesn't really help even with earplugs.
Is soniscape on iTunes?
Yes
I hope you didn't move into my old place on Klump. I suspect it's haunted...
+Darlina Alexia +BretttHoustonTube You're not living next to the lady that initially inspired Brett to make this, right? d;
thank You! That slamming around and footsteps are killing me
If cops do not help then DO IT BACK. ;)
i tried some recorded audio but still, it does not cover the "Bassy sound" of the foot spomping.... i feel the vibration.
Mc/Wow > that "bass sound file" is perfect. it's just terrifying enough to knock noisy neighbors into left field.
In my country, deliberately making noise to annoy neighbours, even for retaliation, is considered stalking. :(
Thank you so much! This is amazing :)
You're welcome, glad it helps!
BrettHoustonTube It does :) However I'm a little concerned about whether or not it is damaging my ears when I use headphones. My neighbor is very noisy and inconsiderate, so the volume is normally set pretty high..
TooK Kat
Yeah, I was worried about that too initially.
BrettHoustonTube Thanks for the reply and the info! I'll keep this in mind :) This track is definitely a life saver :)
TooK Kat
Good to hear thanks!
if i bought the track on iTunes, does it effect the quality of the track if i burn the track to a CD?
It should be the same quality on CD as if you play the MP3 from a computer or ipod etc, it all depends on the process you use to burn it though. There is a difference in quality though between an mp3 from iTunes and the WAV files used to make the cds since MP3s are highly compressed.
how loud do you use it..?
+hymlen v
I typically play my Soniscape at 60db now I live in a peaceful place in the woods. It's enough to cover the trash truck in the morning, the motorcycles that race through the canyon or the raccoons that run across the roof at 3am.
You can download a free decibel meter app for your phone and have a better idea of ranges.
Hi. I can only find subwoofers for computers going down to about 40hz.
What is the name of the altec lansing subwoofer you have?
The Altec unit I have is the ACS340. It goes down to 30hz and is a great price if you can find one. Amazon has a few. The other one I had died recently and I'm not sure what the model number was.

Thank you. I found something by accident meanwhile: Trust Tytan 2.1. The specs say that it goes down to 20hz. It seems incredible for that price. Will it be audible enough?
www.trust.com/en/product/19019-tytan-2-1-subwoofer-speaker-set-black
That's cool. Let me know how it works.
Didn't you talk about a remote control that can work with my neighbor's TV?
Universal remotes can be programmed for most any TV... But I don't condone that... Nope...
:)
Actually, I use a very old fan! :)
Fans are great. That's what inspired this tack. I started recording fans to use when it was too cold in the winter to sleep with a fan.
I would never do this of course instead of breaking laws I just circumvent them like using high
powered massive arrays of blue LED lights to temporarily blind the nuisance and violent aggressive dangerous thug orcs in my neighborhood.
Yeah that’s good you made that 👌

I really thought that the noise that this produced was not pleasant, Brett. I have a suggestion for you. Croqui frogs. They are on the Big Island of Hawaii and you could use that sound.
Well it is designed to mask noise while sleeping not be a pretty nature
soundtrack. Most people find waterfalls soothing. Croaking frogs are not
constant, so as a noise masking source it is not effective since you
will hear the noise between croaks.
Yes! The sound is great. I found a ton of videos with this sound. would be great to incorporate them with a water fall sound. Thanks Ac.
10:20 is the demo? You cover noise with even more noise? WTF?
Yes, just like deodorant masks stink with more stink.
Some people prefer the "noise" of a waterfall to the noise of neighbors screaming and slamming doors while cranking up Garth Brooks Greatest hits...
This deodorant analogy makes me laugh. But I can vouch that masking sound like this works. I have been using a box fan in the bedroom but I have used BWE and other types of music and sounds from videos on YT. The type of sound matters to our nervous system for sure. Besides, it also helps the psyche when we feel like we have some semblance of control in regard to what we listen to.
looks like your using pro tools as your daw
DP actually. But they are all similar.
I prefer Digital Performer, but I use PT when I have to...
I would have blown my apartment complex up
Good idea but this will fuck up your hearing in the long term.
Anyone else notice it was Spiderman playing in the background?
