My favorite tram line and in my opinion the most beautiful in the world is Line 2 in Budapest! It stretches the eastern banks of the Danube on the Pest side of the city, passing under all the famous bridges, monuments, and architecture. It's also just as beautiful at night as it is during the day!

Budapest, Rts 2 and 17/19/41 along the Danube, with the proper views of the river, hills and buildings there. As mentioned by someone else, the Ring in Vienna (Rts 1, 2 and tourist service VRT) also holds quite a view.

For me the (so far) most beautiful tramride I have made is the Kirnitzschtal Bahn from the city of Bad Schandau (Germany) into the Kirnitzschtal . It is a 7,5 km long single line interurban tramway in the side of a road in a very wonderful scene and served by small classic trams from the former DDR. It is not very far from Dresden.

National Geographic choosed the tram line 2 in Budapest to the 7. most beautiful tram line in the world. It runs around the Hungarian Parliament Building and along the River Danube. You can see the Buda Castle, the Mount Gellért and many other highlights on both sides of the river from the tram. And the trams are the beautiful, 50 years old but renovated Ganz articulated trams.

For me, the best tram line system is in Budapest. Althrough it's bidirectional system, nor an ex-communist country, they have one daily tourist tram line, 2. It also has the longest tramsets in the world, a 9-section CAF Urbos 3. If you want to visit Krakow by tram, take the line 0 (touristic, seasonal, runs from late May to early September), 2 (whole-year line, normal), 4, 6 (especially between Cichy Kącik and Podgórze SKA), 8, 10, 13, 15 (also seasonal, runs only in few sundays between May and September), 18, 20 and 24.

  • @Fan652w

This list is very interesting, but very subjective! I was astonished that the ring in Krakow is on your list, but not the Ringstrase in Vienna, where the trams go past all the most important and imposing civic buildings such as the Parliament, Rathaus and Opera. In Berne the trams (with overhead wires!) snake their way through a city centre which is a UNESCO world heritage site. I agree that Dresden should be on the list - and remember that what we see now was back in 1945 a heap of rubble! For trams going out into the country Trondheim is attractive, but the STB line out of Innsbruck is a spectacular line running out into the Alps.

Darmstadt has a beautiful tramway route heading south from Eberstadt to Alsbach (Lines 6 and 8), alternating between narrow village streets and open countryside, continuously following the egde of the Odenwald Mountains. The final stop in Alsbach is named "Hinkelstein" after an ancient menhir which is passed by the trams, while the starting point in Eberstadt is named after the nearby Frankenstein Castle. (Yes, the one which inspired Mary Shelley!) Once or twice a year there are even vintage tram rides on this route driven by a steam engine called "Feuriger Elias" (Firey Elijah) which has actually been operating for the Darmstadt tramway system more than 100 years ago.

In my opinion on this list line 50 of Linz Tramnetwork in Austria is missing. It is the steepest normal run tramline in the world! It has beautiful old-styled trams that run on tracks that lead to the highest point of the city with a beautiful station on the top. There is a beautiful church and a platform from where u can see the whole city. I think it really deserved a place on the list.

And if we are in Austria, we should add the two mountain lines in Innsbruck, the STB to Fulpmes and the Line 6 to Bergisel (albeit the STB is legally not a tram after going through Stubaitalbahnhof, only the part through the city is. But as a passenger, you don't notice the car around you turning from a tram into a train and back ;) ).

Lisbon certainly looks like a unique tram experience, and has been previously mentioned Stockholm and Helsinki have attractive systems. Trondheim is a small but nice tramway, the most northerly in the world after Archangelsk closed down I believe. Was there many years ago and was very impressed and pleasantly surprised that a comparatively small and remote town could sustain trams.
Personally my faves would be Stuttgart, lines 10 "Zacke", the rack line and line 15 for the views of the city in the valley as they climb the Weinsteige, and Bordeaux for the lack of overhead wires in the city centre so as not to obstruct the stunning architecture like the Bourse, plus in the outskirts the lines have not only grass growing but wild flowers that beautifully "greens" those neighbourhoods.

Maybe Yevpatoria, for the section that takes one through the historic center of the resort town... very impressive views...
Grenoble tramline that goes past the Bastille
Kolkata tram, route 18 of 36, for the experience you get of the city
City wall following line of the light-rail tram in Jerusalem... again for it's spirit of place
A tram (anushka) in Moscow Russia

Some of the European ones are very blurred tram/interurban: Oslo to a ski resort. If Hong Kong counts as 'beautiful', I could add another 100. Hong Kong has character, not beauty. So do many more of your choices . How could you miss Innsbruck to Igls and to Fulpmes?
