That's not paranoid it's actually extremely brilliant. And the best part is they didn't even have to actually build it or get it working. They just need to get that information leaked out to the world. How could anybody risk a first strike knowing that there is even a chance that that is true?? That's the equivalent of checkmate in the cold war MAD (mutually assured destruction) fight

it does actually work, it is sort of demonstrated on trainings during 80s. They have designed it via radio beacon network that will transfer sequence for launch. Missiles are initially adjusted to the place. Moreover, if not via silo, then via mobile missle launchers. The issue is that it takes time to distribute order a couple of hours. So, you can theoretically cut the radio transmission in European part and then make a strike. The response would be relatively late and might be stopped. But it is really walking on the razor edge. One side note they are not Russians, they are Soviets. Soviets are damn international: 150 nationalities everywhere and they had their own national republics. Now Russia is much smaller, simpler and nationalist.
This is literally the basics of MAD. It's not paranoia, it's how to use nuclear weapons for safety. It's what makes having nuclear weapons worthwhile in the first place.
Its more like creating a fault. If you need to send an impulse to launch Nukes, the worst thing which can happen if signal line breaks is that they dont launch. But if you need to send an impulse to stop them from launching, you get nuclear disaster when your signal line breaks.
the thing people don't think about is that anything setup on an automated switch like this means you drastically increase the chance of accidental nuclear incidents. it makes it MAD indeed. something could trip just a few of the sensors and trigger on accident. It's so irresponsible and a damn miracle we are not all living in the world of fallout or alive at all. We had quite a few close calls already where similar scenarios happened. Movies and books have been written about them. We really need to unite the world and get rid of these kinds of tensions or we will accidentally grant everyone in the world a shared darwin award.

The "Dead Hand" system, officially known as "Perimeter," was a Cold War-era nuclear deterrence system developed by the Soviet Union. Its purpose was to ensure a retaliatory strike capability even if Soviet leadership was incapacitated during a nuclear attack. Here’s how it worked: 1. **Detection of Nuclear Attack**: Perimeter operated on the premise of detecting signs of a nuclear attack on the Soviet Union. This could include seismic activity, atmospheric disturbances, or other indicators of a nuclear explosion. 2. **Automated Response**: If the system detected signs of a nuclear attack and communication with Soviet leadership was disrupted (indicating they might have been incapacitated or the command structure was destroyed), Perimeter would automatically initiate a retaliatory nuclear strike. 3. **Communication and Decision-Making**: Perimeter relied on a network of sensors and a command structure that could bypass normal chains of command. It could receive and analyze data independently, making decisions without direct human input if necessary. 4. **Deterrence Strategy**: The purpose of Perimeter was to deter potential adversaries from launching a surprise nuclear attack, knowing that even if they succeeded in decapitating Soviet leadership, an automated retaliation would still occur. 5. **Secrecy and Continuity**: The system was highly secretive and designed to operate independently to ensure continuity of deterrence even under extreme circumstances. Perimeter represented a significant shift in nuclear strategy by emphasizing the need for an assured second-strike capability that did not rely solely on human decision-making. Its existence remained largely unknown to the West until after the end of the Cold War, highlighting the extreme measures taken by both sides to ensure nuclear deterrence.
Soviet union to be precise...ny dad used to serve in one of those bunkers around 1985... the plan was like this...if the enemy strikes at them , they would have to launch back everything they had in a spawn of ~4 days. The bunker with 700 people in it would close and it was made to sustain a direct nuclear hit. They used similar oxygen systems as in submarines, which would work only for about 6 days. My dad was kind if happy to not be sent in Afghanistan, but each time they had "doomsday" drills all the communication with outer world would be turned off, which was something what would happen during a real nuclear war, my dad told me that this was one of the scariest experiences that he ever had.

she's so in love with the name dead hand she totally made up her own fantasy of how it was made xD. dead hand, more commonly dead hand switch is a safety mechanism often used on industrial machinery and vehicles, for example forklifts when the loss of operator preassure, i.e a foot pedal, or a seat or something else telling the machine the operator of it is in the correct safe position it will do a emergency stop to try and save the operator. for forklifts this means the forks and truck dont drive or move without the seat or pedal being pushed in to prevent operators falling out getting ran over or operating it out of laziness from the outside of the forklift where you're not as protected. and for many other machines such as compressors or commonly cutters/saws/grinders a operators off hand must be on a dead mans switch so that if they take off the hand from the safe position, and possibly close to the cutting implement and risk injury it will shut off. or if they say faint, possibly twoards the blades the hand falling off the switch would again shut down the machine hopefully preventing injury. a dead hand system is therefore simple a continuous check of normal expected activity and will trigger a emergency response in the event the normal expected activity is interrupted, for nukes that means a continuous check is seeing if nuclear command is operational and alive and if it doesnt find it to be alive it triggers a MAD response.

Its existence remained largely unknown to the West until after the end of the Cold War, highlighting the extreme measures taken by both sides to ensure nuclear deterrence.

it does actually work, it is sort of demonstrated on trainings during 80s.
That's not paranoia. It's called removing a fault in a faulty system.

@@Crispy1961 Yeah, exactly.. Just Jacobsen says that Russians were paranoid. I'd say they were smart.

Here’s how it worked:

What’s her name
@@emmanuelogu9666 Annie Jacobsen, it's in the title dude
she's so in love with the name dead hand she totally made up her own fantasy of how it was made xD. dead hand, more commonly dead hand switch is a safety mechanism often used on industrial machinery and vehicles, for example forklifts when the loss of operator preassure, i.e a foot pedal, or a seat or something else telling the machine the operator of it is in the correct safe position it will do a emergency stop to try and save the operator. for forklifts this means the forks and truck dont drive or move without the seat or pedal being pushed in to prevent operators falling out getting ran over or operating it out of laziness from the outside of the forklift where you're not as protected. and for many other machines such as compressors or commonly cutters/saws/grinders a operators off hand must be on a dead mans switch so that if they take off the hand from the safe position, and possibly close to the cutting implement and risk injury it will shut off. or if they say faint, possibly twoards the blades the hand falling off the switch would again shut down the machine hopefully preventing injury. a dead hand system is therefore simple a continuous check of normal expected activity and will trigger a emergency response in the event the normal expected activity is interrupted, for nukes that means a continuous check is seeing if nuclear command is operational and alive and if it doesnt find it to be alive it triggers a MAD response.
This kept the peace we are now having at least 🤷🏼♀️
The "Dead Hand" system, officially known as "Perimeter," was a Cold War-era nuclear deterrence system developed by the Soviet Union. Its purpose was to ensure a retaliatory strike capability even if Soviet leadership was incapacitated during a nuclear attack.
Here’s how it worked:
How would the automated system know who to strike?
I am very surprised it did not falsely launch ever.
Perimeter concept was a nice idea to fool CIA and other agents but it still worked and saved many lives.
