Thank you so much for doing this video. My prius was revving high especially on hot days and lacked power. I thought my battery was failing, yet no error codes. My fan was clogged up. I cleaned it as shown in the video. I connected it to a 12v battery to test first. Was running slowly due to build up. After cleaning, it ran much better. Now my prius 2 has more power and battery charges very quickly. Fuel cons. From 6.3l/100 to 5.1l/100 immediately. Mileage is 252,000kl. Much appreciated.
If one were to add some filter material or fine screen behind that louver that should really help protect the battery's cooling fan and thus the battery pack too. I'm thinking unless that would restrict air flow too much it seems like a good modification for these cars. I understand the 3rd gen added a filter for this but I don't know if the ducting or fan is different.
Our car made it 15 years and 230k and this was still clean. I think if you have pets in the car etc., a filter of some kind would be a good idea, but any filter will reduce airflow and that is counter-productive in itself.
@@ZookeeperJohnG Thanks. I just watched a video last night from `The Car Care Nut', a Toyota Hybrid expert mechanic's site, that demonstrated an aftermarket screen that snaps on over the outside of the louver for a later model version. He prefers them to the stock filter/screen as It's far easier to detach, clean, and reinstall than the factory one behind the louver. I'm thinking perhaps they make one for the 2nd gen intake. They are a different shape than the Gen 3 or 4 that he was using for an example. I think a screen should be okay but a paper type filter would restrict airflow too much. Of course any filter will after it gets too dirty.
They have value, but for most folks that keep their interior clean, it would do more harm than good because of the airflow restriction, although minor.
Thanks for sharing
Good vid, told me all I was looking for in a short time
Glad I could help

Thanks for the kind words, trying to help others is the goal! Yea, the HSD batteries do not like high temperatures!
Great video thanks!
Glad you liked it!
Thanks!
I needed this video! Ad fan to tittle and system to title please;)
What a ridiculously complicated, yet very simple to understand cooling system for the batt.

@@ZookeeperJohnG Thanks, I appreciate the feedback.
The red triangle and I can hear the fan just started today
Lots of things can cause the Red Triangle, a hot battery is certainly one.
WICKED!!!!
Hi if I can hear my fan does this mean I need a new battery or it just needs to be cleaned
The battery cooling fan only runs when the system detects the battery needs to be cooled, for any reason.
Is the fan supposed start working once you turn the car on?
No, the fan speed from off to full is based on battery temp.
