They were making an emergency landing in the ocean, however it failed, 125 people died of 175 people on board, 50 survived, including the pilot and co pilot. RIP to the 125 people who lost their lives... I'm pretty sure the pilot of Ethiopian 691 talked about it on the mayday air disaster show....

The landing could not save all passengers, planes aren’t designed to glide on water. Only very few commercial planes have flat bottoms where they can glide on the water. But it doesn’t matter wether the wing hit the water or not, the plane would’ve shattered either way
