So lovely... truly makes me feel like I'm in a warm kitchen with my friends. The colors are so delightful and, well, warm and savory-feeling I guess. *So* comfy, cozy and cute. I'd love if there were little animated cooking show miniseries like this!! People from different food cultures making recipes they learned from loved ones. Also, I love how the end credits look like nutrition facts, so clever and creative:) Wonderful job!!
about three weeks into uni and the amount of times ive made instant curry with friends is almost concerning haha but this animation was super adorable and really lifted my energy >< could honestly use a japanese mom to help us not set off the fire alarm tho lololol
I feel like I can truly see how you've optimized the 1 week deadline by prioritizing things (no complex "characters", simple story), and it's similar to your 48 hour film in the way that the narration perfectly syncs up with little sound effects and the visuals on screen. Overall it is such a lovely film and I feel like I've learned a ton about making something both aesthetically simple but also carries a more emotional tone. Personally, as an "animator" (lol) I feel like time crunches means I have to sacrifice the quality to get it done, but you have showed me that I, a very busy student with little time to animate, can totally make something awesome too! Thank you, your videos will continue to inspire me and my art, and I'm excited for more!! :)))
I'm glad you think so, and yeah!! You've articulated it wonderfully. I've come to really like working with prompts and time limitations since different demands call for different approaches (that I wouldn't have explored otherwise). All the best with your animation projects!
This was lovely 🥰 Even though I’m nigerian, when I need help with a recipe, this is exactly how it goes when I call my mum. The switch between languages, is also the same. Thank you for sharing your art/work with us. your skill and sense of design is so inspiring 💖
My family always made this when I was a kid. It was delicious, probably one of my favorite meals. It's funny how many memories I have of the perfectly split bowl-gold potatoes and carrots and meat on the left, warm white rice on the right. Something about the meal just stayed in my mind. But then my father was diagnosed with celiac disease, an auto-immune disorder that means he can't eat gluten without it slowly destroying his intestines. This curry, unfortunately, has gluten. So we stopped making it. But a few years ago, I visited my Aunt's house, and she made it for me. It tasted like memories, like reconnecting with my childhood, like revisiting the strange mixture of traditions I was born into as a third culture kid. This video feels almost exactly like that, just as intensely and deliciously as the curry itself did.
Thank you for sharing such a personal story - I'm really happy this short could remind you of those memories. It's somewhat strange but also beautiful how tastes and smells can bring us back in time to specific places 💛
This... made me cry, the dialogue feels so natural, the mother's voice just sounds so sweet, and they sound like they enjoy each other's presence, I love how mundane it feels, asking for a reminder on a recipe, it's not a big deal :'') I love it, it feel so sweet
i love everything about this 🥺🥺 the louie zong rly pulls it together!! it also really reminds me of goodbye, again by jonny sun which has an essay about making food the way your parents made it when you were little it’s very sweet
PRECIOUS storytelling. I've always thought of portraying the heartwarming moment of preparing a dish without being too redundant or showing the act itself, and you did that in the most impeccable way.
This was so heartwarming, I've rewatched this so many times. I'm having a major burnout with school work and this really helped to bring back the spark and motivation for me. I'm always so blown away by your animations! Your editing and design senses, especially the way you use type in your videos, it feels very experimental to me and I love that in films. Not sure if you'll see this but it'll be so cool to see your process and how you piece them all together! Thank you for sharing this for the world to see 💞
This lifted my spirits, it's so warm and loving the conversation between mother and child and what you chose to put on screen in terms of animation was A1 ! Also as a trilingual person born of immigrants it was really really lovely to see the seamless language transitions. I hope you'll share your process for making the movie x
This was so comforting, and the visuals were beautiful! And now I know to add mushrooms to my curry. I feel like I’m cooking with family at Christmastime 🥰
I really don't know how many times I've watched this short film. It's amazing and it feels super real. Makes me think about my family. Was it a real phone call? was it scripted?
Good work! I myself just gave my daughter, who has started working and living away home recently, some advice to cook some Japanese dishes over phone the other way. Very familiar conversation. (Though I don't call my children "babe" for I am a Japanese...)
did you guys have a specific moodboard / East Asian designers you looked to for these comps? i'm doing a design capstone this year and i'm kinda in love with the whole look of this! i'd love to know where you pulled this inspo from.
yes great question! the book I had open beside me was called "Japan Avant Garde: 100 Poster Masterpieces from Underground Theatre". if you search up "Japanese Avant Garde Posters", you'll find similar visuals to the ones in the book.
I'm not Chinese, and I absolutely love this. It makes me feel for the people who forgot a bit of their culture and reconnect with it, since I never had that problem. I personally would love to portray my cultural state and background with this medium one day! Just waiting for some freetime, maybe in the summer. If anyone is wondering, I am Arab. My mom shows me how to cook our foods, and when I used to live in canada (I am in my home country now) made us watch arabic channels and go to an arabic school set up on top of my western school. So when I came back, I was pretty normal. I even talk arabic fine, and my arabic grades are really good. Like nothing ever happened. But since I fully spoke arabic fine when I was in canada, I was mainly used to translate kids who only spoke arabic.
After watching it for the first time, I rushed into the comment section (something that I rarely do) to say that this was by far the best video on RUclips that I've ever seen. But I couldn't find a way to express it clearly, so I watched the video a second time... and now I'm in tears. It's all because of the style. It's so beautiful that I think I may have fallen in love with it. It can't be clearer than this: YOUR 1-MINUTE LONG MOVIE MADE ME CRY
you haven’t posted in a while… this was one of my favorite RUclips channels, and it has inspired me a lot! whatever you’re doing, I hope you’re happy doing it, and who knows, maybe you’ll end up posting again :)
i’m so speechless rn. truly amazed. you know that scene from the first episode of Eizouken where Midori is watching anime, and she has that realization moment that someone created this. As an. aspiring artist/animator, this is truly inspiring, i really want to work harder.
i've only been away at college for ten days, but this made me tear up from homesickness i wasn't even aware i was experiencing. thank you for this lovely hit of nostalgia and warmth ^-^
This was so disgustingly pleasant to the eye. The composition, color choices, timings, music, the whole thing was immaculate. I'm in awe of how good this is.

Y m I a sooo big fan of u, I love all your videos. So aesthetically done, the design of your videos the elements u use and presentation - from 0 sec to end, all perfect for me. you take a break or take lots of time to produce, but keep doing. take all the time in world ill wait but do not ever reduce a bit of a quality u r already producing. soooo disciplined. Thanks alot.
Very cute/sweet film, and i loved the detail where they switch between talking in english and japanese since thats smth i also do w my parents for our 1st language
Truly beautiful. Love how everything is conveyed. The narration makes it feel like I’m actually about to cook, like I’m processing all of these instructions from the phone. Narration aside, it takes 2 hours to cook the ingredients along with the roux?! Well then, I’ve been cooking curry wrong all along, haha.
This reminds me of how I ask my mom to help me make a dish. She usually does it first so I can get the basic idea before I try it, but with baking she usually lets me take the lead :]
Everything you produce has such a warmth to it...almost like you imbue things with a life force of its own. I find myself time and time again coming to re-watch old videos to become inspired, and bubbling with excitement whenever I see you've uploaded a new one. I hope school is finding you well, and the hardships that come along with art school passes with lessons learned and an ease of heart and mind. I can't imagine being able to be so thoroughly put through the rigors of art college, but you seem to be thriving! Don't forget to take time for yourself along the way!!
Hi Michelle, congrats with your first week assignment with your friend ! just wanted to say thank you, I'm always having a great time watching your videos and it's really helping me to keep going with animation :) wish you an excellent year !

I adore your work so much 💓 Can't wait until a new video (hopefully!)
I really don't know how many times I've watched this short film. It's amazing and it feels super real. Makes me think about my family. Was it a real phone call? was it scripted?
This is such a gorgeous film! I love the line boil and the half tone textures that give so much character to the art!
Awww a 1 minute video of a wholesome mom helping her kid on how to make a food on the phone hope the friends are happy with the food 💕💕
Good work! I myself just gave my daughter, who has started working and living away home recently, some advice to cook some Japanese dishes over phone the other way. Very familiar conversation. (Though I don't call my children "babe" for I am a Japanese...)
I'm in love with you videos. The depth, the detailing what to say..... Can you please make one on S.T Coleridge's Kubla Khan ( his dream vision)🌼
yesyes so glad im early !! ur art style is so comforting and abstract, i love it :)
this is so beautiful, gives me a warm family feeling
i love how you incorporated japanese graphic design in your animation

I really don't know why this animation made me tear up, and made me feel all mushy inside...
good, love your work!!
The constant switching between languages when talking to family perfectly captures what being bilingual is like. Keep up the amazing work!
These are the cozy moments that highlight families honestly. Little things like these make me happy to have my mom
凄くバイリンガルの会話って感じ。

My Japanese mom always made this when I was growing up, it was my second favorite to hot pot.
I'm Japanese. This is so amazing animation! I just noticed there were some words with no meanings which was funny lol
That was so sweet🤗 i really liked it, you are pretty good at animation😁

Very cute/sweet film, and i loved the detail where they switch between talking in english and japanese since thats smth i also do w my parents for our 1st language
Curry is every Japanese’s childhood meal cuz our moms are lazy.
Woaw. It came out great!
Wow wow wow, this is my favorite video ever, rly ! U are my big inspiration, merci
this is exactly how i speak to my Japanese mother, we are always switching languages mid sentance
So creative and homey! Thoroughly enjoyed.

1:05 Why does that voice remind me of someone? I thought this was a recording that you had with your mom or something.
My brother-in-law does the same thing with his Korean mom. Their curry is great and she is so sweet
Yo my mum is literally making Japanese curry rn
This is such a nice video! I love the warm colours!
It's always a mini party whenever you post a video~
i was gonna sub but i forgot i’m already subscribed 😂
This reminds me of how I ask my mom to help me make a dish. She usually does it first so I can get the basic idea before I try it, but with baking she usually lets me take the lead :]
man my great grandpa makes japanese curry like this all the time so this really really connects with me
I want this. The end, I mean. I want a warm kitchen with good food and friends.
this is so cool!! such a nice and calming atmosphere around it :) louie zong was the /perfect/ music choice for this :))
Aww, how lovely! The visuals are so bright, and something about them is so comfortably familiar. The dialogue is so casual too, really nice.
That was exceptionally cute. Well done.
my day has been blessed, my skin has cleared, the sun shines on us again
