This one is the single most effective drill for backhand, hands down. I urge everyone give this a try. Remember to actively throw out until you have enough speed that makes it almost automatic and I guarantee you'll increase both spin and power. What a gem of a video.❤
...until you have enough speed is the key here me thinks. Once speed and momentum is in place, I think just keeping a loose arm is "enough". If you can do a video on how to get the wrist whip incorporated, I'd be grateful. I now only seem to get it by accident and it really seem to help with spin/speed/distance.
Hard to say because most likely individual. But try to go slow and actively throw out. When you get the feel of that, try again but with loose arm and add speed incrementally. I still think this is much harder than it looks but is non the less a good drill.
No better feeling than when that left arm comes up in front of your face and the left leg swings around. Purely a result of timing and correct mechanics, including this one you are teaching. Thanks a lot!
Tried this for years and decided its a technique that works really well for Dan and few others. At 4:05 in the slow motion section he doesn’t flick his hand out of the pocket like he insisted was the most important part of the technique. Too confusing for me I guess. I’m glad others have found it useful.
@@nordicdiscgolferatrumble9430 Hi Dan, I started playing at the encouragement of a friend about three years ago. I didn’t much care for it then but in the past few months I have really come to enjoy the game. Love the competition and the camaraderie. Just wish I could throw better as I’m struggling to get much distance.
Thanks for breaking it down and keeping it as simple as possible. With built up muscle memory from other sports I've really been having a hard time learning proper backhand. This video really helped me slow it down and not try and muscle through it which always makes my hand get sting stingers or numbness
Crazy. The very first drill video I ever worked on was the original Beto drill back in like 2010, this brings back fond memories. This is awesome to see, keep them coming. I still suck, I'm going to work on this again, let's see some new tips.
I had a random thought the other day if the legendary beto video was still upand not only was it, but a recent post from the legend himself wow Thanks Dan!
Thank you so much Dan. I’ve played 22 years. Learned so many bad techniques and had to come back to this and back again after i was ready to understand. In my stubborn mind and only through tons of trial error and learning to feel what power transfer is. Well this is perfect upper body technique and i share it when people are interested. Just thank you
I just gave this a shot during fieldwork today. Basket 100ft out. At first it was a bit frustrating and I even pulled a couple shots waaay to the right, but after a while I started to get the feel for it, although still a bit tricky. My aim Wasnt great during these attempts, but not horrible either. Anyway, Im guessing the aim is less important than the "feel" in the beginning? One thing that was noticable is that the discs seemed to come out with more spin than with my regular upshot - sorta "hovering" a bit more than what is normal for me.
Thank you for the demonstration Rick! I went out yesterday and got some varied results, and I think that’s totally my own fault haha. I have a question if anyone might be able to answer. While I’m doing this drill, how much emphasis should I put on throwing with my core/hips as opposed to my arm/shoulders? Do I focus on using my core at all? I’d really appreciate feedback from anyone! Thanks so much!
Is the straightening of the arm a conscious move with some muscle effort from the triceps? Or is it an unconscious thing; a mere consequence of already collected kinetic energy? Thanks!
It is very conscious when you are training with it at first and then becomes a simple nuance that's automatic later. It's still important to keep a conscious effort in the future as well in the field during training, when you feel that rust come back.
I had to try this, I might be doing it wrong since I had limited success with the exercise. My own 2c is that actively pushing out with muscles is not working for me at least. I had better success with being super loose in the arm and just focusing on really sling shotting the disc forward. A big aha moment that I have not had before was how nice of a pop/whoosh you get from the wrist whip when it occasionally happens. The amount of spin and disc speed from the wrist whip is significant (and with the right disc angle and height I got over 20% longer flight with the same throwing effort).
@@discgolfamateur2175 that’s a good feeling to build up. I think staying loose is excellent but there is a moment when adding fast muscle power to the previous pivot in the kinetic chain will give you power you can’t start with it you apex the momentum and add to it. Just my experience based on years of of trial error and feeling
What is the timeline for this progression? I know this is a broad question but I am trying to determine when it is the right time to go from 20% to 40%, 60% to 80%, i.e. and then when is it time to start adding the walk-up? My power pocket has always been poor and I always attributed it to my hips rotating early. Thank you for the updated video!
The timeline is the tricky part. It goes almost solely by feel. I always say after about an hour of drilling, it's time to add a step and more power. At the same time, if you feel like you have progressed enough and got the feel down earlier, go right ahead and start progressing from there.
Also note, Adding a step is okay before you start hitting 80%. It's when you start adding more steps is when things get more complex with the hips and shoulder timing.
@@danbeto4364hey Dan. I'm pretty confused. When you're demonstrating it, the disc goes in and then out of your chest and then you rotate which bends it again. What would be the point in rotating after the disc is extended?
@@samhowl1152I’m not Dan but in my understanding it’s to protect against injury. If you arm keeps going without your body it puts strain on the shoulder.

Interesting. How come you started playing?

Still only been playing for a year and a half. I keep coming back to this drill every few months. I need to just never stop doing it.
This has made a huge difference on my backhand. My distance feels smoother and more accurate
Unironically the best teacher in disc golf. Simple & Comprehensive with respect to the nuances that don't ever get talked about.
My dude! Looking healthy and dropping knowledge as good as ever. Glad to see you back
Much respect Dan! Been watching you since the Doritos, and what's in my bag. You have the best drive tutorial of all time. Forever the Master Beto
