Thank you so much, had exact same problem & fixed following your steps. Added another nut on the existing nut to stop it from coming lose again. Good work guys!

well done, very common problem in some units of this engine, in addition to the timing chain and oil dilution problems with diesel

Hi Jose and sorry for the late reply! I think the timing chain is one of the biggest problems on the ingenium engines. Too bad actually, because from the pulling power, consumption and CO2 values, the engine is not bad in my opinion! Greetings, Peter

I have this problem intermitently but more regular now, lots of fumes now escaping through air vents in bonnets. Very few mechanics seem to be able to help without eanting to replace entire exhaust system

had the same issue, was 3 manifold studs sheared, so engine out and very expensive

Could this cause intermittent smoke also?

Hey, yes there could be smoke coming out of this location as well. In our Evoque, the fender was completely crusty and black. Greetings, Peter

Thanks! My heat shield was completely black and had layers of grime and soot on it. Cleaned the shield and tightened the (very) loose nut. Fingers crossed it stops smelling. On a side note, my nut‘s thread didn't "extend upwards" like yours, but downwards, which made tightening quite hard. This may be down to a previous engine change. Either way, very helpful!

My heat shield is black.. but even tho i tightened the nut.. i can still smell fumes.. so i guess the problem is deeper 😕

Is the clamp that surrounds the pipe ok? If it has become deformed or enlarged, the two pieces are no longer connected correctly and something is still leaking out.
