  • Welcome to the tenth episode of Skelly's Garage!
The Unfaffening is DONE and #FaffE39, my 2001 BMW 540i is baselined!
It's been a ton of work to get to this point - and a ton of work remains yet, but at least now, we can breathe a sigh of relief before we continue.
What's all in this episode? Glad you asked!
We've got exhaustive exhaust coverage, edge-of-your-seat seat removal, and pedal-to-the-metal throttle reworking. Among many other things.
As always, let me know what you think!

Nice work! It's always nice to see a neglected E39 be brought back to life like this.

@skellysgarage Hello my friend great work. I wanted to ask you a question, I just purchased a 1997 540i pre vanos from auction for $775. It's alittle rough but the engine sounds good. My question is I have the 3 light trifecta abs brake light and traction control light on. Also it seems that the car is in limp mode, I hear the abs module is us the culprit, could the wheel speed sensor also give me this issue?

@troylogan3653 ultimately there are a ton of possibilities there. I don’t think I’ve seen limp mode as a result of ABS or wheel speed sensor issues, so you may have multiple compounding things happening all at once. Do you have a scanner?

I was reading that with abs all kinds of issues happen with that not communicating properly. But I was going to try the wheel speed sensors first since they a cheaper. Abs module you have to have it sent out and coded. I will keep you posted but you definitely have a new subscriber. Thank you for responding back I appreciate it.

Driving a 22 year old BMW free of warning lights is always a treat.
The German narration is an oopsie, but always fun. Thanks for watching!

Nice, nice work and nice that you haven't given up yet. That said, only now did I realize that I can have a leather covered handbrake handle, instead of the plastic one that came with money. Off to e-bay!
On a more expensive sidenote, have you thought of replacing the fan and fan clutch with an electric one? As a matter of fact, the 600W fan from the E60 540 fits nicely and is good enough (at least for the M54 needs). It does require some coding, though. But LCI E39s have the same connector as the E60 fan.

Thank you as always for watching along!
You have got me interested - if there is a way to retrofit the N62s electric fan, I’d definitely look into doing that. I hate clutch fans so much.
I also really want to do that for my X5. Maybe that fan would fit there.

Good work! Please take care of the rust where the ghetto exhaust hangers were

Absolutely. That is still relatively light in terms of destruction but I am consulting with a body shop on the best path forward overall with this car. Thank you for watching!
