  • Its odd, but why? Watch my review for all the details.
    Rotary have informed me that:
"We named the watch Commando after a vintage Rotary watch family"
Here is a link to the watch:
    rotarywatches.com/collections...
RRP for this watch is £279. But do shop around!
Thanks so much to Rotary for sending me this in for review, it really helps!

Back in the 1990s, I had a Rotary Swiss Commando quartz chronograph- that was a watch - and- a- half; its best feature was a jumping hour hand, so no need to stop the movement when adjusting for time zones. Mind you, a similar effect could be achieved with a non - hacking mechanical movement like your subject for today, which looks fun. The price, for what you get, is a lot less amusing. I think we've been spoiled by AliExpress.
Very good review, Dan. Nice to see you doing more frequent videos. Cheers 🍻!

No squad of elite special operators strikes more fear in enemy hearts than the legendary Rotary Commandos. Many a foe has quit the battlefield upon seeing the havoc wrought by their signature power move, the Spinning Magazine Dump.

I made my peace with my Vostoks regarding the second hand stuttering, which is the same by product of what's happening with that Miyota too. Apparantely, it's because of it having an ' indirectly driven seconds hand ' which is basically not part of the time keeping - it can stop, skip and flit about while the other hands keep proper time. I don't have enough knowledge to explain it properly but I think basically, the second hand gearing basically disengages/slips momentarily. Having swapped out alot of Vostok seconds hands, I know there is a leaf/tension spring which sits there to mitigate this effect - this spring has been the biggest pain in the ass and always led to the second hand falling off if you didn't ensure it was properly engaged when installing the second hand. Not fun at all. I don't tinker anymore but still get the sweats when I think about the stress!! 😢

A watch that doesn't hack can't be synch'd with other members of a team so it can't be a commando watch, a pilot watch, or a commando pilot watch. All watches look pretty much the same to everyone but a handful of (we) watch nerds. These are nice looking watches for the money and they should be durable enough to wear as an every day watch.

I heard you say "they can do it on a £30 Lorus" just as I was doing up the strap of my £30 full screen lume Lorus. Which, by the way, has only lost 15 seconds in 3 months!

Accurist, Rotary and others I can't recall, right now, struggle to remember what they used to do very well.

I really like this one I think it looks very smart. That movement though such a shame it has that in it, even if it had the premium 8x movement in (I can’t remember the model number) that has a bit of decoration and a Skelton rotor would have been a winner for me and I’d probably have bought it. Anyway great review as always 👍🏻

Love the looks of this one…well put together dial, especially the lumed numerals even though black in daylight! The long, bold seconds hand is a winner, but seems to highlight the stuttering of the in-direct drive 8215. I’ve got a watch where the beauty and functionality overpowers my disdain for the stutter, BUT I didn’t pay this much AND mine doesn’t appear to stutter this drastically! But I do dig this Commando!

Rotary can put that price tag because it does have that heritage behind that your average Sugess, Tandorios, and even upper tier like San Martin.
Pity it got some things wrong. Movement, style, price.
The case is ok, the crown is spot on, the dial is nice (readable and pleasing), the red second hand, the leather strap are all nice touches.
This would sell heaps for £99. Which is what it will sell for as someone said, at Argoses or eBay in a couple of years.

Excellent points. Heritage does add value, but maybe this is stretching it a little bit too much.

My first thought was also going without underpants and agree about the name - weird. Also weird is the traditional GMT hand being used as a second hand. It's like they fished it out of the spare parts bin.

I like the case, the strap and the overall design of the watch, however i think its way over priced . I mean you can get a very good San Martin with the better NH35 movement for the same money.
I have the ROTARY Chronograph that looks a bit like a Navitimer and its a brilliant watch, got to be getting on for 15 years old on its original leather strap.
    Good video though, 😃👌

Good review of a watch I hadn't come across. Your criticisms seem valid to me. Is it a commando or a pilot? It can't be both.

It’s definitely a nice looking watch. I’ve always been partial to white dialed field watches. And you’re right; the name doesn’t seem to fit the watch. It’s more like a dress field watch. And it is a little overpriced. Thanks for the great review.

Commando, so what! Camel cigarettes have no camel in them. I just bought a green face one and it's a lovely finished watch and runs very well for an £160 watch. I get just as exited over a nice £50 or less watch as I do my Omega's. For me a watch has to a) look nice B) be well made with a good finish c) be reliable. And this one does all the above along with a sapphire crystal and anti reflective glass.

For a bargain basement movement, the price is way off. Come a year or so they'll be on sale in Argos for less than half what they are now.

I love your reviews, I see what you mean about the price/ watch / value for money, however I have just ordered one from watches2u at £112 , which I think makes it a good buy,
Thank you for your reviews, always a pleasure, happy new year buddy

8215?? No Way! As you say the name is 😂. By the way I loved your C.W review!! I hate that movment in g this..You know as I do what the Chinese do for 90 dollars. This is so over priced. It would be 40 on Aliexpress if it was Chinese.

Wouldn’t a unit of commandos need to synchronize their watches? Surely a hacking movement would be a necessity in the field

it is a commando watch for lgbt soldiers in the armies of western europe and usa.. they could accept this queer dial for commando watches, they would not mind... :) maybe a little bit of pink into that white dial would be desirable by them on top
    of that...
