They've done such an incredible job of developing the characters in a short space of time thus far. The added depth to Henry and Sam's story makes it all the more emotionally impactful, and they managed to do all of that in just one episode, same way they did with Bill and Frank, and with Sarah, it's nothing short of a remarkable feat

  • @jaysundae

5:32 They're actually on track with regards to covering all the story beats. The story of the first game (including Left Behind) adds up to about 5h or thereabouts when you factor in all the cutscenes, the pivotal gameplay dialogues and the important action sequences from gameplay that add to the narrative. The runtime of the first season equates to roughly just over 8 and a half hours, so they'll be able to cover all the story beats and then some.
It may feel like there's far too much to cover because of the gameplay sequences between each story segment, The first game is about 12-15h long depending on the playstyle, and that includes a LOT of gameplay, but I assure you, when you take most of the gameplay out (sequences that don't entirely add to the narrative), it's more than enough to not only adapt the story beats, but also expand on certain story segments or character depths

Ellie's desperation mixed with a bit of hope in trying to save Sam, and Sam buying into the hope was so incredibly sad to see. It clearly takes a huge toll on her and adds to her survivor's guilt, but it also now gives her added motivation to be the cure for mankind.
Another thing that hit me really hard in the episode was his own brother being Henry's first direct kill, his brother who looked up to him as his own superhero. Everything about their story was perfectly executed, what an incredibly tragic episode. The acting in this episode was exceptional as well

For me interesting is that the question Ellie asked in the car about Tommy was indirectly fully answered by Joel in the stairwell. Tommy always wanted to be a hero and do good. Joel told Ellie in the stairwell that he was on both sides with Tess and Tommy. So Tommy didn't just leave Joel for the Fireflys because Marlene recruited him, but because nothing good came out of robbing and killing innocent people. Joel portrays Tommy all the time as if Tommy needs him. In fact, Tommy knows exactly what he wants and where he can't find it. So the Fireflys also disappointed him. He didn't do any good with them either. Joel always says Tommy needs him. In fact, Joel seems to need him more than the other way around.
Ellie and Joel switch sides at the end of episode 5. That was the Tess moment from episode 2. Ellie runs ahead while Joel is still waiting at the grave. Tess gave Joel a mission he wanted to fulfill as her last wish.
The relationship that Joel had with Tess was similar to Ellie and Sam. Ellie promised (unspoken) Sam the cure here and couldn't keep this promise. She now wants to make sure that this never happens again. As Tess said at the time "save who you can save".
Ellie really has a mission now. Indirectly get through her feelings of guilt. She wants her blood to work. Before that, she was someone who had no control over anything. Others have determined where she grows up and where she has to go now. "I didn't ask for this" were her words in episode 2.
Now that has changed. Now conviction plays a role and she takes control. She wants to save the world so that there are no more Sam's. And while Joel gradually finds his humanity again and lets people into his life again, Ellie loses a little more of herself and she takes the lead here in the end.
I think the series showed that more clearly in this way than the game did.
In addition, Ellie and Joel have reached a new level of connection with each other. Wordless understanding. Both wanted to save the brothers during the attack. That wasn't Joel's "don't do it Ellie" look. That was the look "I'll give you fire protection Ellie". And Ellie has absolute confidence in Joel.
There was also a little joke about the game. The moment when the sniper shot and Henry and Sam senselessly ran out of cover, only to return immediately.
Or it was reminiscent of the scene where Henry and Sam fled without Ellie and Joel.
Kathleen kills traitors. I think this is not the point that makes her particularly malicious. That's what you do with traitors. The people who betray their own people are worse than the enemy. You see the enemy coming, traitors stab you in the back. And you have to assume, if you let them live, that they will do it again at any time. The best example of this here is the doctor who was betrayed by a rat.
In the history of all revolutions, very few have ended bloodlessly, and very few have left their enemies alive after their victory. They were lynched. So nothing happens here that hasn't happened 1000 times before. In addition, there are no more laws. The only thing Kathleen does differently here is that her focus is exclusively on revenge on Henry and unfortunately at the expense of everyone else in her group the people. She was a good leader for the revolution, but when that was done, someone else would have had to take over. And, of course, she was a deviant, reluctant person.
In the end, unfortunately, she was right. You cannot "fuck with fate". Henry sold all his people and the revolution for medicines, killed indirect a good and important man and Sam died anyway. This by his own hand. It doesn't get any worse. On the other hand, if Sam hadn't betrayed the leader, the revolution had never come, because the leader lacked the radicalism his sister had. It's just a loose loose situation. Misfortune on all sides, no matter how you spin it.
I felt Kathleen's death was fitting. I mean she made it clear beforehand that she didn't care about children (wtf) and was then killed by a child clicker.
An interesting feature of the show so far is that real brutality is only shown to us when Ellie sees it. We see Joel beating the soldier to death in episode 1 because Ellie is there and sees it. Ellie tortures and kills the stalker in episode 3. We see Joel's sniper kills because Ellie sees them. We see Henry's death, Sam being shot and Kathleen's death. With all other killings (the old Sniper, Bryan) you only hear it because the camera is focused on Ellie while she doesn't see these killings herself.
I found it really good to make Sam deaf. In the end, this opened the door for Sam to show Ellie the bite and then she could stay in the room with him without being attacked. He simply didn't hear her. Better than solved in the game and has given Ellie even more depth. She really hoped she could help Sam at that moment.
    Spoiler Game Part 2
    👇
I find it interesting how people so unreflectively show incomprehension to the point of hatred towards Kathleen. Especially those who played part 2.
Exactly the same thing is happening there as here. Ellie becomes Kathleen in every way. The only difference is that Kathleen's social world is slightly bigger than Ellie's.

I didn’t play the game, but did Joel say that line about kids having it easier b/c they don’t have anyone relying on them, like he did in episode 5? Just curious, b/c I know Ellie didn’t try to save Sam in the game, he didn’t even tell anyone that he got bit..and the fact that they put Joel’s line in the show to foreshadow Sam relying on Ellie to save him later on..and she ends up letting him down, in her eyes..made that “I’m sorry” at the end hit so different in so many ways..Ellie turning into Joel after not being able to save someone that was relying on you, Joel looking down at the writing pad, maybe thinking how sorry he was that he couldn’t save the people he was supposed to protect.
The *quack*ing writing is so damn good...👏 and thanks for the great reviews! ✌️

I think there are different sections of underground in KC. Where they went through was just a small section of maintenance tunnels that connected a few buildings owned by the same developers. Either FEDRA never drove the infected into that section or they cleared it out at some point. Although that doesn't explain what happened to the people that were living down there.

Both games...and the series...are an empathy machine. By forcing us all to suffer the same pain and trauma throughout a set of universally shared moments and experiences, we're able to connect with each other again in a way that the modern world rarely allows anymore. It reminds of this VR "game/experience" thing from the book that the movie "Blade Runner," was based on (Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?) I think it was actually called an, "Empathy Box," and it was the most popular pastime for most people on Earth. When you connected yourself to this thing, you would relive the experience of some guy (he had a name, but I don't remember what it was,) who kept trying to climb this rocky, steep hill while wearing nothing but like a loin cloth or something. The "players" would physically feel everything as they climbed the hill...exhaustion, frustration, aching muscles, bleeding feet, etc....until, just as they reached the summit, they would lose their footing, tumbling all the way back to the beginning, and sustaining injuries the entire way. You'd then pick yourself up, and start again, with the same results, over and over. Participants would have a vague sense of connectivity with everyone else using the simulation at that moment. People were literally addicted to it, because it was the only thing that made them feel human anymore. "The Last of Us," is like that, just on a smaller scale and with the possibility of a more hopeful future, which I'd argue is more truly human than the experience of the Empathy Box was.

    • @Ruytger

You might be aware, but the experience of the man pushing the boulder up the mountain is a reference to The Myth of Sisyphus. Albert Camus, a French philosopher, used the myth as a vehicle to explain his view of what he called the absurd, or Absurdism, characterized by the individual's struggle to find meaning in a meaningless world.
It has been used in quite a few different movies and shows;.The Coen brothers (Big Lebowski, Fargo) use ideas from it in virtually all their movies and sometimes reference it directly.

    • @rawkmode6315
      @rawkmode6315 Год назад

@@Ruytger Yeah, I assume it's very much inspired by that, and I almost claimed that's what it was in my original comment until I remembered that it had some subtle differences. The experience involves you assuming the role of a character named Wilbur Mercer who is climbing the hill while being struck by stones thrown by unknown assailants at the summit. The details are a little different, but I think the concept and it's purpose are exactly the same.

Feels bad, man haha. Great adaptation. Testament to the quality and consideration for the game that the tone, essence of characters, and major story beats are intact but any changes and additions are done well to fit within a season of TV, and is a chance to re-examine and add more depth to this world, to affect mainstream audiences and still surprise fans. Combined with this being scheduled weekly makes it much more event TV, gives each episode and subplots sufficient time and space to sit with the audience and we're able to watch together at the same pace. I prefer that much more than release all-at-once binge watching, where shows have a tougher time taking hold in pop culture, IMO.

Massive spoilers! You clearly know that this is a movie and know many aspects - and clearly know things can't be exactly as the game. The big differences are: Game needs you to keep playing, where as a movie needs to capture you (character connection, visualization, music to enhance scenes, feelings, etc.) and hold you! With a game you're focused on playing (albeit I've seen compilations of the cut scenes); where as with the movie/show - you're utterly focused on the show! But a show like this is a bit different cause of the game and those compilations and because of the fact that there will be people whom don't know anything about the game and/or the cutscene compilations. "The hurting/killing" talk between them - I really don't think Joel is pissed off at himself, it's more that he's sorry that 'this little girl' had to shoot someone to save him; and the realization that he could fail his mission from Tess without some help... He knows what its like, so that's why he's opened up even more to her, allowing her to talk to him IF she wants. For me that was the bonding point. Cause look at his actions reactions with anything to do with El. The way he looked at Henry when he woke up - that was a 'death stare.'
