    Ellie and Joel switch sides at the end. That was the Tess moment from episode 2. Ellie runs ahead while Joel is still waiting at the grave. Tess gave Joel a mission he wanted to fulfill as her last wish.
    The relationship that Joel had with Tess was similar to Ellie and Sam. Ellie promised (unspoken) Sam the cure here and couldn't keep this promise. She now wants to make sure that this never happens again. As Tess said at the time "save who you can save".
    Ellie really has a mission now. Indirectly get through her feelings of guilt. She wants her blood to work. Before that, she was someone who had no control over anything. Others have determined where she grows up and where she has to go now. Now that has changed. Now conviction plays a role and she takes control. She wants to save the world so that there are no more Sam's. And while Joel gradually finds his humanity again and lets people into his life again, Ellie loses a little more of herself and she takes the lead here in the end.
    In addition, Ellie and Joel have reached a new level of connection with each other. Wordless understanding. Both wanted to save the brothers during the attack. That wasn't Joel's "don't do it Ellie" look. That was the look "I'll give you fire protection Ellie". And Ellie has absolute confidence in Joel.
    There was also a little joke about the game. The moment when the sniper shot and Henry and Sam senselessly ran out of cover, only to return immediately. This is how Ellie behaved very often in the game. She was AI-controlled and she liked to do it. She ran out of cover, right in front of the enemy and then back again. 😁

    1. I think this is fundamentally why the story is as good as it is. No matter how much we love how a character is written & fleshed out they are at risk with every step they take so we savor every sec we have with them. No one is safe. Even someone who is seen as a main character like Tess or Sarah (Joel's daughter). That rule of plot armor doesn't really exist in this world.
    2. Kathleen's obsession to find Henry was the ruin of Kansas City. Reminds me of another story about a Captain Ahab. "Always remember folks, no matter how broken your heart is NEVER go full obsessive!"

    • @joeg6478
      @joeg6478 Год назад +2

      right that's why i think that even tho Kathleen was the one best suited to lead the KC resistance against Fedra, she needed her brother to temper her baser instincts of taking revenge against collaborators. Her intense desire for vengeance blinded her to the possibility that her brother's last wish of forgiveness might've been not only for her benefit but for the good of all the survivors who would look to her for leadership after his death. I believe he knew that was the only way they'd be able to heal and make lives for themselves after all they endured. not to mention the fact that Fedra's defeat meant Kathleen controlled the entire city above ground which had been 100% cleared of infected yet instead of finishing off the underground horde and securing KC's perimeter, Capn Ahab chose to chase her whale.

So many conflicting emotions/motivations in his performance. the look of shock, giving way to grief then despair written all over his face, all occurring simultaneously within seconds - if Lamar don't at least get the nomination for an Emmy, it's rigged

  • @TheToasterPirate
    @TheToasterPirate Год назад +17

    This was a great episode, and wonderful reaction again! Go with decapitation over disembowelment, as a general rule. Anyway, both Kathleen and Henry died at the end because of their love for their brother, both because they went to their extreme form of love, vengeful love and self-sacrificing love respectfully.
    Ellie's belief that she could cure Sam made it so much more painful. I think she genuinely believed that it would work. She is a child, she has been told over and over that she is a cure, she has no understanding about how a cure would be made so it makes sense that she thinks it could be relatively simple... Oh, so sad. She apologized at the grave.
    When Tess died, Ellie hung around to grieve, while Joel shoved his emotions down grimly and pressed on. This time it was Joel who lingered and Ellie who left. He is becoming more emotional, and she is becoming colder/more traumatized. I also think she left so fast because the faster they leave, the sooner there will be a cure. The sooner that will never happen again (in a child's mind).
    Everyone we know that Ellie has lost that she had a relationship with, she lost due to the infection. She has been told that she is the cure, that she basically exists to fight the infection. She had her first battle, and she lost. That is what is going through her head, I think.
    Sam also faced the window. Two things: He knew he wouldn't see Ellie, which means he wouldn't attack her. He was protecting her. As he felt himself turn, he knew he wouldn't hear her. If he couldn't see her, he wouldn't know she was there and thus couldn't attack her. Also, it has been confirmed over the years of the game that runners DO have the person in their head. So Sam was in there when he attacked Ellie. Something to think of though -> If Ellie never touched him, if no one ever touched him or got in his vision, he would be sitting there forever watching the sunset. He's deaf, so he wouldn't hear anything. Once he hit the clicker phase, and he could no longer see, then he would be sitting there in darkness and silence forever.
    If you play the video game, when you get to the sewers area, get every note from Ish. They give a nod to him which I appreciate (the part of the tunnels with the kid's room and the picture on the wall that says, "Our protectors -> Daddy and Ish." It's a fascinating and heartwarming/heartbreaking story)
    Fun Facts: Joel collects the comic books in the game for Ellie. Cordyceps is one of the fungi that is composed of chitin; crustaceans and a lot of arthropods also have a lot of chitin in their exoskeleton. As the infected get worse and worse (covered in more and more of the fungus), you can kind of think of it as having more and more armor/exoskeleton.

    Kathleen going on rather unempathetically about how children die, and Henry should've just let Sam die, only to get taken out by a child clicker was rather poetic.

      The creators pointed out that Kathleen is not necessarily wrong, kids do die all the time, and that Joel was even okay with driving away from a family with kids that needed help because he’s protecting his own and how that kid probably died. So in many ways Kathleen’s logic (because she’s probably seen kids die under FEDRA rule) is not wrong, because if other kids aren’t so special and immune from violence in this world, why would Sam be any different or more special

    • @Tiana_Tea_Leaves
      @Tiana_Tea_Leaves Год назад +2

      @@CaptainPikeachu objectively she is right, but also, objectively what made Michael more special than Sam?
      Kathleen uses objective truth to justify revenge-driven war crimes. It was personal no matter how she wanted to spin it.
      Michael was a well-loved revolutionary who's death did more for his cause than his life. Kathleen used his death to destroy and then became arguably worse than the previous oppressors, her blinkered motivation resulting in the fall of the entirety of Kansas City.
      Neither Sam or Michael were more valuable than the other. They were just valued more by those who loved them

  • @G1Transformed
    @G1Transformed Год назад +1

    @Sesskasays,
    23:09 The theme is family, and what one is willing to do for their family.
    Joel froze the last time he had a chance to safe Sarah--he believed the military would protect them, and so he dropped his guard.
    Tommy shot a soldier dead to save what he could of his family.
    Tess sacrificed herself to save the only family she had left, Joel and even Ellie.
    After living a full and satisfying life with the love of his life, Bill checked out with Frank, but not before leaving Joel an important reminder about family.
    Kathleen and Henry are the extremes of what a person does for family, and these extremes brought a cruel and cold end to both their stories. Sam was Henry's purpose in the same way Frank was Bill's, and once Sam was gone Henry felt lost and he had to go ='( Sam's death was so much worse in this version of the story because Sam told Ellie that he was bit and they had time to save him! Thanks to the poster on the wall of hospital in the Boston QZ we have a timetable for complete Cordyceps infection:
    -bites to the neck, head and face: 5 to 15 minutes
    -bites to the torso, shoulder, arm and hand: 2 to 8 hours
    -bites to the leg and foot: 12 to 24 hours
    The poster next to that one told us the symptoms to look out for as well:
    -slurred speech
    -coughing
    -muscle spasms
    -mood change
    Sam couldn't speak, but I think is conduct with Ellie shows that he was still very much him when he showed her that he was bit. She and Sam should have told an adult in the room! The first episode showed us at least three amputees, so we know amputation works! Sam might have still died given that the dirty hotel room they were in and the lack of proper tools and medication, but that's a problem they could have dealt with afterwards, but more importantly, the little bit of extra time likely could have saved at least Henry's life. Henry died believing he failed Sam ='(
    I think they made this change to further develop Ellie's story. She was feeling pretty invisible and a bit careless--she's a child, I get it, but in this world, she can't afford to be one. She needs to be alert and this horrible lesson is going to make her do that ='(
    We are at the halfway point, and this story was a reminder that people who've made it this far, are doing the same thing everywhere, ENDURING and SURVIVING, and that's not living. Ellie asked Joel a little while ago something like, if you've given up on the world, what's the point of going on. It's a good question, as hope and living in the moment is living. Bill and Frank were proof that you can have a life in this new world, a fulfilling life. Will Joel get to where Bill and Frank were? Will Ellie learn from the mistakes of he past? The next half of this story is going to be wild, and I cannot wait!

  • @fluffy_walrus
    @fluffy_walrus Год назад +5

    Kathleen presents an interesting contrast. She's lost someone so good and pure, and she clearly lost hope in humanity as a whole and shifted to a more practical mindset. One twisted by vengeance, absolutely, but she's operating with that ruthless calculus in mind...kids die. They can't save everyone. Her brother represented all the good in humanity, in her eyes, and Henry condemned him (and humanity, in her eyes) to death for a single kid to get medicine that would probably help get him better for now, but maybe not forever. She references this in the showdown, going at henry for his willingness to condemn the world for one person.
    And Henry's more or less on the level with that. He knows he did a horrible thing and is struggling with that. Above all else, he values his brother, his family, at any cost. He IS willing to sacrifice the world if it means Sam lives on, so when Sam turned, and he shot Sam...well, he didn't really see a point in living. There wasn't anything left for him.
    And that gives Joel something to consider here. Watching the army kill his daughter, his source of goodness and hope in the world, left him with a very practical mindset. He was able to see the corpse of a dead child and not really think anything of it when he dropped him in the fire. He was ready to shoot Ellie when they went looking for Robert. Tess is the only reason Ellie's alive right now. The father in him likely empathized with Kathleen. I'm sure if Tommy hadn't killed that man who killed Sarah, he would have tracked him down to kill him. But he also understood Henry going to any lengths to protect Sam, because he knows he would have done anything to protect Sarah when she was alive.

  • @novatm13

    A sentence that stuck out to me was "it ends how it started" by Kathleen. That pretty much sums this episode up. The world is how it is because of the infected and it is how its going to end. The end of the resistance, the end of sam&henry, the end of the kansas chapter of joel&ellies adventure.

    • @joeg6478
      @joeg6478 Год назад

      I also think Kathleen's story was a cautionary tale for how Joel nearly ended up after Sarah's death. They're both examples of what can happen after a person loses too much of themselves to that world and the twisted justifications they fool themselves into believing will allow them to understand existence post-apocalypse. at that point, living becomes all about survival, life becomes cheap and everyone becomes expendable. even the lives of children, normally seen as that which must be protected at all costs as they represent hope for the future become simply another burden in a doomed reality. Kathleen's words "it ends how it started" i think signaled her choice to willingly give up her humanity to the notion that's just how the world is, instead of holding onto hope for a brighter tomorrow like her brother wanted. Ironic that ignoring his last words of forgiveness to hunt Sam and Henry lead Kathleen and the KC survivors to be massacred, everything he fought and died for which effectively killed him twice - it ends how it started.

You can find a series of notes that detail how it started and expanded, how endearing and good a lot of these people were and the tragedy of how things fell apart. There is a misable room which everyone who knows will know what I'm talking about, but I won't ruin anyone's day with if it for those who don't cause its heartbreaking. One of my real favourite moments though is when the group in speculating on what happened and its actually Joel to say "god knows they didn't deserve it", I dunno that just always hit me.

    What was really interesting to me was the fact that Kathleen couldn't see passed the beam in her eye while trying to kill Henry for the mote in his. She made this big speech about how Sam wasn't the center of the world and Henry made the wrong choice by sacrificing her brother to save his. But she's essentially doing the same thing. To avenge her brother (who is dead by the way! I mean at least Sam was still alive at that point!) she essentially sacrificed Kansas City by ignoring the serious signs of the infected rising up. Damn shame.

    Kidding. Tears are unavoidable for this show.. I always watch a show or movie before I watch any reactions. I have to admit that I was feeling a bit bad watching your amazing reaction to this knowing what was coming for you. In retrospect, Bill had the "best" death on the show thus far. He went out in a peaceful way of his own accord, hand in hand with the love of his life. Tess' death may have been the most heroic, but there was much fear and pain involved (you could hear her screams after the capital building was ignited).

    A core message of the second game is that bloodlust for revenge will destroy you, and nothing good will come of it. They definitely incorporated that here with Kathleen basically getting the whole town killed for her personal revenge. All their fighters got overwhelmed, and now the infected are free to get to whatever survivors there are in the city.

    I feel what Kathleen said here was, at the very least, food for thought for everyone who heard it, and I wonder what they think about it and how it's going to affect (or how it affected) what they'll do going forward.
    To quote: "[You don't understand!] But I do. I know why you did what you did. But did you ever stop to think that maybe he was supposed to die? ... (Kids die all the time.) ... You think the whole world revolves around him? That he's worth everything? This is what happens when you fuck with fate."
    TLDR: actions can have consequences so far reaching or sometimes out of left field, it's basically impossible to predict anything.
    (So can you really blame someone who was just trying to do what they thought was right at the time?)
    We don't know what exactly happened in the Kansas QZ. Yes, definitely, there is no excuse for raping, which is one of the things Henry said the Kansas FEDRA did. I wonder though about the murder he mentions... Were they actually just murdering people with no reason? Or was this similar (albeit probably more brutal) to what was happening in the Boston QZ where hanging is the punishment for simply exiting or entering the QZ without permission.
    Not saying that there were no murders without reason, or all 'murders' must have had a reason in terms of safety for the greater number of people but... if you kind of think about it from a certain perspective, Kansas QZ seems to have effectively driven the infected underground so much so that there's barely any evidence of them on the ground, even outside the QZ walls, unlike in the areas surrounding Boston, for example, where buildings are just covered with fungi, cooked and fresh.
    Thing is: they survived 20 years apparently relatively free of the infected, and that's probably because of measures FEDRA was imposing.
    Still, of course, there was a resistance movement. But that resistance, up until 10 days ago, was led by Kathleen's brother who was the forgiving type. So I imagine, yes, he takes action against the murder and especially the rape, perhaps, but he draws the line somewhere, and he takes care not to cross that line.
    Somehow, I imagined them as some sort of yin and yang? Kathleen and Michael. And they at least had some balance between them when Michael was alive. But without Michael, Kathleen, who says she was never good, had no one to hold her back from crossing the line.
    And Henry was the cause of the loss of Michael.
    Because he wanted to save his brother, he ratted out Michael and FEDRA killed him which pushed Kathleen to cross the line and lead an actual uprising that effectively overthrew FEDRA... and further, led her to hunt him down to this housing area... where a whole horde was able to come back up above ground and (probably) kill the whole contingent of resistance fighters... and then probably run to the old QZ with its wide open gates and kill or infect all the rest of the citizens there who has no one left to protect them.
    I mean... I wonder if Henry at the very least thought of all of that that night before going to sleep. But that maybe he was thinking, yeah, you could call me a bad guy because I, in a way, doomed the whole QZ population. But Sam's ok, right? So it's ok. I can live with it.
    And then waking up the next day to Sam attacking Ellie...
    Is this what happens when you fuck with fate?
    Could he have thought in the seconds just before putting the gun to his head, that it all led to nothing, that it was all his fault - his brother, the QZ - that he was just a bad guy, period?
    ...
    ...
    ...
    Also...
    Was Marlene fucking with fate when she didn't shoot Ellie (or stopped others from killing her, whichever)?
    She didn't kill Ellie when she was clearly bit, she could have turned and killed or infected them all... but she didn't. Instead, she believes in this delusion that Ellie is the key to a vaccine or whatever. Pipe dreams. But then she gets herself hurt and unable to get Ellie out of Boston herself and dumps her on Tess and Joel. And Tess gets bit in the process...
    Well, Joel is likely a bit past this line of thinking now because he's starting to warm up to and be protective of Ellie, but surely that was where his mind was shortly after they had to leave Tess. And pretty sure he still thinks all the vaccine/cure stuff are just pipe dreams.
    But I wonder what he thinks now of Kathleen's words? Was Ellie supposed to die? Is she worth everything?
    (Blame Marlene, too, for giving Joel a second daughter he didn't want. Just kidding, just kidding. 🤪 )
    What does Ellie think of Kathleen's words? She seemed so hopeful that her blood would help Sam, it must have destroyed her that it didn't.
    Does she now still believe that her blood holds the key but that she really just needs to get to the Firefly doctors first? Does she think it's a sure thing that a cure can and will be had if she just gets there? And at what cost?
    ...
    ...
    ...

    A thought to consider. When Henry says "What did I do?" was he questioning what he did to Sam? Or did he realize he killed "a really great man" for ultimately nothing? Did he ultimately make Katherine right?
    In some respects everybody had reasonable selfish motives. Katherine was more than ruthless but she was a bit unhinged. Her brother though, if a good leader, would have been more valuable to the community if he was a saner leader than Sam, Henry, or Katherine.
    Also, I think we'll see that Joel and his brother did some terrible things in the name of survival and so there will be parralells there. If you watch the post episode commentary you also see that the show runners were intentionally drawing a parallel between Sam and Henry and Joel and Ellie.

    In all of it's sadness, this is an amazing story. I think this is the only series where "character development" goes to trash when they're killed off...and I'm still watching. Not because I like that (cue LOST and WALKING DEAD) but at least it happens within an episode or two, not after a whole season. But we need to remember the name of this show "The Last of Us" in that Joel and Ellie are the some of the ever decreasing population on un-infected humans left on Earth. It's going to get a lot worse, even to the bare minimum, before humanity can naturally fight off the Fungus like Ellie's genes. As the Fungus adapted, so will Humanity and THE LAST might actually be able to fight off the dusk of their existence...

    Everyone should understand this is a story about love wrapped in a zombie narrative. As the showrunners said "Love is what keeps us together in the dire moments and that same love may doom us all". This is a tragedy. The human race is at an end and this is The Last of Us. Love is what keeps people surviving but love is also killing any hope. Think about this episode. Love drove everyone to where they are and they are all dead. It does not matter right or wrong it is all about love. In a tragedy every decision is wrong. I hate to say it but this is a very sad story that will probably end in the end of everything. That is what Druckmann was pushing when he created the game story and what he is bringing to the show. Mazin has added his creative view on love to make the story a drama for TV. This is just a tragedy and just be ready to be sad. As Druckmann said on his Twitter: "Episode 3 was the happy episode"
