Well, at least it makes sense to have to redo the whole race when you fail. Whereas with here you might expect a checkpoint for the Metalpede chase sequence but then suddenly you're put at the beginning of the mission.

It's a pretty annoying aspect of an otherwise fun game. Although, the part I had the most trouble with (and never even actually beat) was the race around the city against Erol.
Yes, the checkpoints are atrocious, but after not playing this game for years, hearing Jack picking up dark echo gave me such a rush of dopamine. xD Picking up dark echo, light echo, precursor orbs, metalhead jewels, and ammo is awesome, but none of these sound cues hold a candle to picking up green echo orbs in the first Jak and Daxter... god, the sound design in this entire series is wonderful.
When the team was making Crash Bandicoot Andy said he or someone else on the team wanted the Wumpa Fruit when picked up, and I think breaking the crates along with a few other things, to sound like you're playing an exciting pinball machine. Not the point but I find the whole sequence of Sig covering Jak, about a minute of offscreen violence, and then him just casually walking away without even acknowledging it leaving behind 20 or so skull gems and a sea of dark eco both hilarious and on brand.
I just finished my first playthrough and by extension this level and yeah my jaw hit the floor when I saw the checkpoint placement or lack thereof here, even by Jak 2's standards which are so low the bar is in the underworld, it still manages to be exceptionally bad. None of the specific platformer challenges or whatnot are that demanding all things considered but they're all over instant death pits/Dark Eco and with practically nonexistant checkpoints which makes an otherwise middle of the road action platformer downright excruciating.
