Where is Le Mis , where is in the Heights, where is Westside story, where is next to normal or catch me if you can?! I mean there's so many to choose from I don't know how to even put it to a top 10 !!!
*flips over a small table* WHERE'S NEWSIES? Are 20 newsboys who just happen to be undeniably amazing dancers performing to a heart-pumping score not enough for you, Ms.Mojo?
Yup. Sad that there are young folk who think Broadway started with Rent. And if truly know the Tonys, Michael Jeter's Grand Hotel performance should top the list.
How did the American Sign Language revival of Spring Awakening not even get an honourable mention? Or Cynthia Erivo's "I'm Here" in The Color Purple? Both were phenomenal performances last year!
Daniele Alexis of course she would be!!! It’s been THE #1 Tony Award Performance of all time since 1982!! No one can top Jennifer Holliday and And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going!!!! People can google it if they don’t believe me but she has held that title for OVER 35 YEARS!!! She’s a force to be reckoned with!👏🏼👏🏼
So, is this Top 10 Tony Award Performances, or is it Tony Award Performances from the Top 10 Most Mainstream Musicals? But I will admit, Dreamgirls is 100% worthy of its placement.
I'm sorry, but this list is ridiculous. It is just simply a list of someone's favorite musicals/performers and the Tony performances from them. "Turkey Lurkey Time" from 1969? The original 42nd Street performance with Jerry Orbach? Will Rogers Follies?! Ben Vereen in Pippin?! It's obvious the people at MsMojo don't know jack shit about theatre.
Elizabeth Butler - YES! Seth has a whole Obsessed video just dissecting that one performance. One gets the definite impression that this person never watched any Tony performances before the past 20 years, and just threw in a couple of old ones with lots of RUclips views to throw us off the scent.
Guy_With_A_Stick-Totally agree with you, that performance by the cast of Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet should have at least been on this list if not on the number 1 spot. That performance was amazing to watch.
Well, its not great. However, I still think they did an amazing job. That might seem confusing, but the orchestra was going full sicko mode. It was rushed. Plus, there are rumors of Idina having an asthma attack. IDK if its true, but whatever. If you can even get on Broadway, you're amazing
fluffyhales Newsies is such a work of art. Though it's popular, it doesn't get the attention it deserves. The dancing is incredible and the vocals are just as wonderful.
It is a total masterclass in voice, acting, writing, movement, song, lyric, and theatre all neatly contained in one human performance. As a classically trained Bass-Baritone I can agree with the #1 choice.
Thoroughly Modern Millie needed at least an honorable mention, not only was it incredibly fun and catchy, but it was the “a star is rising” role for newly discovered Sutton Foster
The Pippin Revival's performance of "Magic to do" was epic. The amount of insane acrobatic tricks plus great vocals shows it deserves at least an honorable mention.
I love that Spring Awakening made it onto the list! But personally I prefer the revival performance, the use of the American Sign Language made it even more breathtaking
The fact that Les Mis, Phantom or Newsies didn't even get an honorable mention...makes me salty. However Anything Goes got an honorable mention, so I'm not that salty.
Positions 10 to 2 will provoke a lot of argument, but it is pretty hard to argue with the #1 choice. 35 years later and that song is still the benchmark for all Broadway divas (and I mean "diva" respectfully).

2011 was a great year for Tony Awards for two reasons - Andrew Rannells in the Book of Mormon's, I believe; and Sutton Foster's show stopping tap dancing performance in Anything Goes! Glad they had an Honorable Mention at least :)
ok yes I'm mad that Hamilton didn't get higher and that waitress wasn't even on this list, BUT COME ON ANDREW RANNELLS WAS NOWHERE ON THE LIST AND IM ACTUALLY GOING TO DIE WTFFFFFFF WHY DOESNT ANDREW GET EVERYTHING IN THE WORLD LIKE HE SHOULD!!!😭
dreamgirls was the first time I became aware of broadway in my small Midwest town .I bought and sang along with the cast recording cassette and it was my first musical I saw in person -great memories, cats was/is also a fave having seen it twice
Jimmy Wallace of course it would be!!! It's been the #1 Tony Award Performance of all time since 1982!! No one can top Jennifer Holliday and And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going!!!!
Can't you Hamilton fans just be happy that Hamilton is at least on the list? There are so many other (better) musicals that weren't even on the list, so just be happy it was on the list at all
you looked over great comet. they put together two songs that don't go together seamlessly and the interaction between the performers and the audience was charming and fun. the party atmosphere of the song made it a performance to remember.
Can we just stop and acknowledge Hamilton? Throughout the musical dawning, a musical fandom has risen and fallen like the sun. Hamilton hasn't fallen in 2 years and a half. It looks like it'll be popular for some time so :') let's enjoy it Lin we love you
Can we stop and acknowledge any other musical? like A Chorus line, Avenue Q, or Sweeney Todd. That's the problem with the majority of Hamilton fans, they only care about Hamilton, they don't know the greatness of other musicals, they only knew Hamilton and they think it's the best musical
i know plenty of other musicals and love Chorus Line and Sweeney Todd. But LMM did more than take Broadway by storm, he affected the entire culture. Whole generations of people are learning history and discovering their own creativity. The Hamilton phenomenon is much bigger than the incredible show at the Richard Rodgers (and LA and London and Chicago). And yes, the show itself is that good.
Rannells and I Believe deserve more than an honorable mention. That was the first time in a very long lifetime of watching the Tony Awards that I saw a Tony performance and it immediately made me want to buy the cast album and see the show.
Hey as those of us who have pets or at least like Disney movies with cute fuzzy animals how can we not get teary-eyed over Lion King or Cats! Yes Cats may be be over done but it has a great score, plus the dancing is awesome!
G Rodriguez I saw Cats many moons ago with my step Mom. I enjoyed it immensely, but she didn't just not like it. She HATED it. Yes, "Memory" is beautiful and the actress we saw did a fabulous job performing it, but the junkyard set ruined the whole thing for her. She could not get past the set. Strange woman.
For me, it's easy to enjoy Cats because I use have it on video recording of it and as I didn't have many video tapes I'd watch it so often that I got nostalgic for it‼️
Phantom of the Opera Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford? Sweeney Todd with Angela Lansbury? And my personal favourite, Hugh Jackman in Not the Boy Next Door!
Yup! All better choices than Hamilton, Rent or Spring Awakening. The Wiz, Ain't Misbehavin', Barnum, Oklahoma, South Pacific... the list goes on and on of truly great shows. Hamilton is a joke in comparison.
MY ADVANCED TAP CLASS OF THREE IS DANCING TH AT EXACT VERSION OF ANYTHING GOES AND WE HAVE TO DO ALMOST EVERYTHING THEY DO!!!! Wish us luck at our recital!!!!
I loved James Corden's Tony performance from 2012's One Man, Two Guvnors. It's not a musical, and his performance on the Tonys was only one minute long, but the physical energy he put into that minute was amazing. Play nominees tend to not get highlighted on the Tonys, but this was a special one-man performance by Corden. He made the most of it and would go on to win a Tony that night.
MY LIST: 10) Coco with Katherine Hepburn. She can't sing to save herself, but the whole spectacle makes me giddy. 9) "I Will Never Leave You", Side Show. The energy of Skinner and Ripley, who were singing the song from the closed show for what was probably the last time for an audience that large, is absolutely electric. 8) "The Circle of Life", The Lion King. Julie Taymor is a force to be reckoned with. 7) "Memory", Cats. Added points because Betty Buckley's performance is the vocal equivalent of being punched in the gut. Minus points because it's Cats. 6) "Anything Goes", Anything Goes (Revival). As the ever wise Jonathan Groff once said, "Toes, toes, toes ... ass, ass ass." 5) "Seasons of Love"/"La Vie Boheme", Rent. Anthony Rapp is the greatest dancer to ever grace the Nederlander stage (sorry, Newsies). 4) "Revolutionary Costume for Today", Grey Gardens. Christine Ebersole as Little Edie is a mindblowing performance on its own, and even more so when you remember she played this character's mother in the first act of the musical. 3) "I Hope I Get It", A Chorus Line. I never thought I was one to cry easily, much less cry of pure happiness. Turns out putting a huge mirror on stage is all you need to change that. 2) "A New Argentina", Evita. Some people hate this performance. Clearly, it really "doesn't matter what those morons say", because I am not one of those people. 1) "And I Am Telling You", Dreamgirls. Duh.
an ACTUAL list of best Tony performances: 10. School of Rock 9. The Scottsboro Boys 8. Hedwig and the Angry Inch 7. Book of Mormon 6. Spring Awakening 5. Catch me if You Can 4. Next to Normal 3. A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder 2. And I am Telling You I'm Not Going 1. The Colour Purple (Revival)
A Gentlemans Guide is the first performance ever that actually made me go get tickets to it on Broadway. Been to a lot of shows because i heard they were good or I was gifted tickets, but that performance is the reason I went to that show.
even in a watchmojo video Andrew Rannells gets robbed
Ikr? It's like every time he tries to win something, he always gets robbed.
I know right? Poor guy.
Angela Meza yeah okay this comment made me laugh 😂
Too soon😂
Angela Meza too soon dude too soon. *cough* falsettos should have won *cough*
Les Misérables is not even a honorable mention? The two performances of "one day more" were epic!
Totally agree!
EXACTLY
Agree

Where is Le Mis , where is in the Heights, where is Westside story, where is next to normal or catch me if you can?! I mean there's so many to choose from I don't know how to even put it to a top 10 !!!

Where is Assassins?
Where’s Falsettos?
I doubt they were born to even know these classics actually
Where is Newsies????
*flips over a small table* WHERE'S NEWSIES? Are 20 newsboys who just happen to be undeniably amazing dancers performing to a heart-pumping score not enough for you, Ms.Mojo?
Oh so Cats will make the list but not Les Miserables? I see which side you're on.
HA TRUE
Fantine Daae CATS IS COMPLETE SHIT. LES MIS IS ONE OF THE BEST MUSICALS EVER MADE CHANGE MY MIND.
Grace the Actress I really REALLY disagree about the Cats being bad, but come on! why wasn’t les miserables on the list! disgraceful.
The side of the damn devil
@@mewingmanda it's a top 10 list... it probably would of been there if it was a top 20 for sure though!
The Color Purple performance should have been on here!! That was a HEART stopping performance!
100% agree
Uh hello where is SpongeBob
Where was Phantom, Les Miserables, Miss Saigon or The Producers? Not even an honourable mention!?
Ryan Rafuse I mean.....they ain't really that good. Les Mis sure but phantom was meh
Yea, where was Phantom, Miserables? Without a mention?
Les Mis and Phantom are my favourites but for Phantom the performances with Sarah Brightman were (awful) not that good
Victoria Pontmercy I agree. . . how is she ALW's angel of music?
Ryan Rafuse while I love The Producers, the Tony performance was not to my liking. They could go with Springtime for Hitler or Keep it Gay.
This list is more like the 10 Tony Award performances that MsMojo knows of...
Seriously...
Rocco Ryan exactly
lmao faaxxxxxxx
Yup. Sad that there are young folk who think Broadway started with Rent. And if truly know the Tonys, Michael Jeter's Grand Hotel performance should top the list.
Its more like a list of movie-star studded performances

EXACTLLLLKKKLLLLLLLLLY
Bella Grace Ew waitress. The rest are good though

At least Spring Awakening even got a mention
i was saying. WTF were they thinking to not include the color purple revival's performance. Everyone stood!!! I cried!!
I haven't even seen The Color Purple live, but I did see it on The Tonys last year and it was awesome‼️👏🏻🎉💃🏿
omg im here makes me cry every time, especially when im listening through the cast recording
Halle Nelson YES the color purple revival Tony performance is my favorite of all time
If Dreamgirls wasn't #1 I was gonna jump out a window. That performance STILL literally gives me chills.
KTaylorJordan It's been at #1 for Over 35years. No need to worry! NoOne will top Ms Holliday!
Even the short clips of it give me absolute chills. Now I must go watch the whole thing.
I literally only clicked on this video TO MAKE SURE Jennifer Holliday got her rightful spot at #1.
Noah Lindquist Yes! Ms Holliday has held that spot for OVER 30 YEARS!🙌🙌 She is Queen!
There could be no other #1. For my money, it's the best vocal performance ever shown on television. I'm serious.
Wildcat612 It's also held #1 for 35Years AND COUNTING!
HAPPY TONY AWARD, THESPIANS.

5._Beauty and the Beast_
4. _Avenue Q_
3. _In the Heights_
2. _Lion King_
1. _Great Comet_ (I know I'll love it.)
Yes Hamilton should be a lot higher on the list than they are on this video
It shouldn't be on the list at all. There are way better performances, to be honest.
Timothy Robert Like the Color Purple Revival Performance!!!!
Great Comet had the best performance this year. (was the best SHOW this year too, but eh.)
goodyougetastar Lol that's cute. Dear Evan Hansen was the clear best choice.

Amen!!!
Ummm, Jennifer Holliday was number one on this list.
They seriously know fuck all
so we're just going to sleep on my girl cynthia erivo
RIGHT?????
Korin Norton IKR One of the best vocal performances of all time in tony award history
Korin Norton exactly. I listened to that song so many times.

Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth's Defying Gravity is One of the best performances in the tony awards!
Well, its not great. However, I still think they did an amazing job. That might seem confusing, but the orchestra was going full sicko mode. It was rushed. Plus, there are rumors of Idina having an asthma attack. IDK if its true, but whatever. If you can even get on Broadway, you're amazing

Wow congratulations you're literally better than everyone else. We're all in awe of your musical theatre superiority
I still get chills when I watch The Circle of Life. That entire performance is a masterpiece. Lucky to have seen the show in London.
Finally, a correct number one. Nothing beats Jennifer Holiday in Dreamgirls.
The fact that Les Mis, Phantom or Newsies didn't even get an honorable mention...makes me salty.
However Anything Goes got an honorable mention, so I'm not that salty.
Jennifer Holiday is FANTASTIC. NO ONE plays that role better than her.

"Infectious rock songs". For a musical about people who have AIDS. Classy…
yikes.
I'M SO GLAD RENT WAS INCLUDED. I'M ACTUALLY CRYING BECAUSE I WAS NOT EXPECTING THAT BUT THANK YOU
I knew fellow Hamilfans would be upset if Hamilton came anywhere but first.
Helena Perry Hamilfans are the worst .-.
Hamilfans are the best - they'll just never be satisfied.
nothing can top dreamgirls sorry

Musical Trash Trash - "Hamilton fans aren't even problematic" that's interesting...
i was waiting for "Anything Goes" to show up. that performance is so complicated and hard to do, and Sutton is just perfection
Newsies deserved to be on this list. At least to be an Honorable Mention. Their performance of Seize The Day will always be better than Yorktown in Hamilton.
Alaina K. At least the show is on Netflix in the U.S. :)
Brad Woods Yeah But we don’t have mean girls anymore 😭
Also apparently they came out with a mean girls musical it’s pretty bad. It wasn’t terrible but it wasn’t good either. They had the wrong actors for the wrong parts. Regina’s actor was really bad her acting didn’t watch up remotely with the original.

I KNEW Dreamgirls would be number 1!
Jimmy Wallace of course it would be!!! It's been the #1 Tony Award Performance of all time since 1982!! No one can top Jennifer Holliday and And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going!!!!
Grand Hotel with Michael Jeter. The most buoyant and joyful Tony presentation ever, it bubbles like expensive champagne.
Can't you Hamilton fans just be happy that Hamilton is at least on the list? There are so many other (better) musicals that weren't even on the list, so just be happy it was on the list at all
@@Izzypops-kc3ln *Laughs*. You did not just insult Phantom.
@@Izzypops-kc3ln STOP giving us Hamilton fans a bad name!
AJgames29 lmao I’ve changed I was stupid a year ago phantom is way better lol
you looked over great comet. they put together two songs that don't go together seamlessly and the interaction between the performers and the audience was charming and fun. the party atmosphere of the song made it a performance to remember.
Just clicked to make sure Jennifer Holliday was #1
Rachel Tyler Of Course she was!! She has been the #1 TA Performance since 1982! No one has topped her yet!
Really, WatchMojo? Bloody Cats? Why does everyone love this so much?!
Hamilton is over rated trash Alvie. Sorry, worst show I've ever seen.
Hamilton ruined broadway
For me, it's easy to enjoy Cats because I use have it on video recording of it and as I didn't have many video tapes I'd watch it so often that I got nostalgic for it‼️
Great list! Looks like ms mojo did their homework!
Wish us luck at our recital!!!!
damn Great Comet even gets robbed on WatchMojo! seriously, not even an honorable mention? not cool.
Oh, you missed a biggie...Michael Jeter's song and dance from Grand Hotel. He was the picture-book definition of "on fire".
Seriously. That it's missing from this list makes the whole list a great big joke, IMO. Easily #1 or 2.
You are correct Declan. Grand Hotel is FAR better than Hamilton, Spring Awakening or Rent.
Agree, agree, agree!!!!! Michael Jeter had the crowd on their feet cheering!!
The late David Carroll was also fantastic in that number.
I was going to make this comment if someone else didn’t!
HOW DARE YOU LURE ME IN HERE WITH HAMILTON THUMBNAIL AND THEN MAKE IT NUMBER 10?!
Yes, Anything Goes gave me chills when I saw it! But phantom should have been mentioned, too!
MY LIST:
10) Coco with Katherine Hepburn.
As the ever wise Jonathan Groff once said, "Toes, toes, toes ... ass, ass ass."
5) "Seasons of Love"/"La Vie Boheme", Rent.
Duh.
The Great Comet will be my number 1 I just know
Karina Cole great comet will always be my number one
Raul Esparza singing “Being Alive” in Company SHOULD HAVE AT LEAST BEEN AN HONOURABLE MENTION!!
i still can't get over anthony running into lin lol
Me neither XD
Defying Gravity ? NINE ? i can’t even ..
I don't know why it's that low either
an ACTUAL list of best Tony performances:
10. School of Rock
9. The Scottsboro Boys
8. Hedwig and the Angry Inch
7. Book of Mormon
6. Spring Awakening
5. Catch me if You Can
4. Next to Normal
3. A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder
2. And I am Telling You I'm Not Going
1. The Colour Purple (Revival)
Still don't exactly agree but still WAY better than this one
Janey Grace - it would appear your definition of the Tony Awards is Tony Awards of the last 10 Years, plus Dreamgirls.
I'm obsessed with The Gentlemans guide and the color purple performances
Janey Grace I
A Gentlemans Guide is the first performance ever that actually made me go get tickets to it on Broadway. Been to a lot of shows because i heard they were good or I was gifted tickets, but that performance is the reason I went to that show.
I was ready to send you a nasty message but you landed it with Jennifer, to me, the most stunning moment ever in the theater.
I thought Neil's performance of Henry and the angry inch should've been on the list.
katherined hedwig and the angry inch not Henry lol
elennon8 blame spell check
It should've been. But I'm biased coz that's my favorite musical of all time probably:D
Anna
No Seize the Day (Newsies)? This incredible performance deserves more attention..
I agree!
WHAT??? No NPH as Hedwig singing Sugar Daddy and bringing down the house???????????????
i loved Rogers and Hammersteins Cinderella at the 68th tony awards
I did too, but don't leave out the "d" in "Rodgers," ok?
AvalonMorley of course, my bad!
What about Les Misérables? They had such an amazing tony performance that I had goose bumps after it ended.
Wait till we get a updated one and I wanna see the outsiders on there
