I still feel the Steam Deck is the better of the products, but Asus with its ROG Ally are compelling, especially with how it's been slashing its price point. Valve for the most part has the quality control, mostly thanks to SteamOS and the price is a bit more compelling, but the hardware is started to get dated, rivals offer better hardware specs and in the case of Asus, the price point is quite competitive, if they sort out the quality control and OS aspect, the ROG Ally would be a better product then what Valve is offering with the Steam Deck, and that gap will widen the longer it takes for Valve to release a Steam Deck 2 or if Valve isn't aggressive enough on slashing prices. The simple truth is, SteamOS is the main selling point of the Deck, take that out or if rivals have a compelling interface, things could start to change in rival's favour, especially with Asus that have been aggressive on lowering the price point. I also think this is why Valve are not releasing SteamOS to the market for rivals to use, they likely know it's the main selling point of the Deck, but it's a bit short-sighted of Valve, with SteamOS, they've had a massive opening to shift gamers from Windows to Linux, but they are not taking it by pushing SteamOS to be more open for rivals to use it, in other words, forcing them to make their own solutions through Windows, which are getting better all the time. Then there is the noise about Microsoft planning on doing a streamlined Windows with a portable interface for these portable devices, if they do and it works well, Linux market share could start to go back in decline because Valve didn't push SteamOS hard enough when they had the chance, and let's be blunt about this, if we have a streamlined WIndows OS and interface, a lot of us will switch back because you will have 100% games compatibility without any of the issues of the translation layer. Seriously Valve, what on earth are you playing at lol, they've been pushing gaming on Linux for decades now and now they've got an opening to do so that actually works and yet Valve isn't taking advantage of it by pushing hard for market share by trying to get SteamOS on as many devices as possible, I mean seriously, it's been 3 years with no signs of Valve opening up SteamOS to the market, and that one move whiles in the short term is an advantage to Valve with the Steam Deck, it's likely going to backfire on them once Microsoft gets its act together with Windows and then Valve is back to square one with Linux having little to no market share, when you get this kind of opening, take advantage of it as quickly as you can before your rivals wake up, something Valve is clearly not doing and it might already be too late.

You all will be shocked at one thing more than battery life: performance improvement and no we are not talking about 2-3% because of memory there's surprisingly around 15-20% at 15W improvements. I don't know what magic Asus did but that's what my mate saw, I can't say much so I don't put him in trouble, so don't judge it now, we are yet to see benchmarks and numbers as Asus not allowing it. Overall it's best handheld in the market easily if we ignore pricing, as pricing depends on individual not someone decides for them what is worth it
Yeah so my thought re: this is that not only does it have more RAM but it also has faster RAM so there is potential for better performance. I get my review unit today so I feel comfortable speculating about this for the next few hours. After that I'll have to abide by embargo 🤦🏼♂️
i know i`m probably in the minor, but i would like a handheld formed like a Play station portal (with the gamepad grips) and a screen around 9inches. No its not so portable that you maybe would have it in your pocket and play it at the bus, but you could take it with you at trips, cacbin etc. Would certanly match my needs
I don't need a more powerful handheld PC. What I do need is HDR support for Steam Remote Play so that I can play games that the Deck can't handle on a handheld.
@@FanTheDeck A lot of people have had success with Sunshine/Moonlight when Steam Remote Play was giving them problems, but I've had the opposite experience. Steam Remote Play runs smoothly but I get errors when trying to connect with SS/ML.
The battery upgrade was nice, yes I agree. As for RAM, yes, I accept that too. Because in some games I had to set the Ram value to Auto. For example, Alan Wake 2 (insufficient ram error), Hogwarts Legacy (Shader was not enabled at the beginning of the game). But what I liked most was still the joystick. On the original Ally, the joysticks didn't feel solid to me, I even felt some clicks. Regardless, I'll wait until a new APU arrives. Because when the new one comes, they will have added these innovations and maybe even have more RAM.
Love to see this fwiw. I've said a few times, I think how they've handled the X was incredibly smart. They took all the feedback on the one hand, and on the other hand, it doesn't seem to overly invoke FOMO for the people that are content with the original.
@draco2xx I have both the Deck OLED and the ROG ALLY Z1X, and yes, that small 7" screen is amazing. It's really crazy how good it looks. It's just right, for real. Still, it's not that much smaller, honestly. Where people get confused is that the ROG ALLY is for major game titles like AAA. The Deck is great for lower-end and older games, indie games. That's what people need to know, honestly. If I would have known, I wouldn't have the OLED right now. I found out the hard way, but they are both amazing machines and great to have. I love having both.
Listen idc what anyone thinks. The ROG ally is still better than the steam deck. Even the SteamDeck Oled wasn’t a big of an upgrade over the LCD model. End of the day I want games and the Rog ally is giving me more of it especially in regards to triple A titles you can’t play on the Deck. Can’t wait to preorder mines
Ally X: Bigger Battery My Ally: I only play on it for an hour or less at a time. And charging is fast, I'm good Ally X: Faster and more ram My Ally: I don't have fps counter turned on so I won't see the 3-7fps difference lol! Ally X: New I.U, 1tb nvme and upgraded external components My Ally: I have a 1tb in it already, We are getting the new armory crate and it feels fine as it is right now When it comes down to it for me to spend an extra $700 CAD ( After selling my ally) it's not going to be worth it
Because of Ally X, this will force most handheld makers to use a bigger battery I hope. MSI already following through with there new Claw, lets see if other follow through or not.
I think customer support with Asus depends on what region. As far as I know here in the Philippines Asus has a good customer support base on my experience specially with local stores in shopping malls
I've been happy switching to the rog so i can primarly use a windows oriented expirence, but i won't be lying. There is stuff i wish was better, like sd card issues! excited for a new device, but idk about a refresh ....
If Steam can make the Steam Deck 2 as powerful as the Asus ROG Ally, it will be game over, but I doubt they will or can. I love the Deck OLED, but I'm glad I have the Asus ROG Ally Z1X for the really demanding games because the Steam Deck just can't run the AAA titles. The Asus ROG Ally, though, is very good at running them, especially plugged in.
9:46 the X has USB4 not TB4. TB is an Intel thing. Also the bandwidth is 40GB/s on USB4 or TB4 vs the 60GB/s from an XGM or Oculink port. So it's not double as you stated. Vanilla Ally? The better term would be OG Ally imo. Also VRR on OLED displays didn't become a thing until this year. They can't just make it out of the blue if the tech isn't ready yet and it probably won't be until a few more years when it comes to handhelds. Hopefully with the Ally 2 it will come with a bigger screen option. It could be LED or mini-LED for all I care just as long as it has VRR. OLED would be nice but it won't be a requirement for me and I have lots of OLED displays myself.
I did mistakenly say TB4 a few times. Good catch and sorry about that. I use both Vanilla and OG Ally in this video. I don't see a problem with either term. Agreed that it's a new thing - like I said, there's no 7" OLED VRR. If anyone _could_ be at the forefront of this, it'd be ASUS seeing as they have the first OLED VRR laptops. But I think I wrapped up most of the important context in my 15-30 seconds discussing it.
Bought a 1tb Oled a few months ago. Since then I haven't used my PS5 or Portal. So I've decided to go fully back to my gaming PC. So it will be Deck for Emulation and less demanding games. ROG ally X for anti cheat and triple AAA games. Plus gamepass. Selling my PS5 will offset the price
Double battery life is still not going to be enough. I kill the battery in 45 minutes right now and end up on my Switch oled which will run almost all day. I would want at least 4 hour battery life. I would guess the x gets less that 2 hours which means a dead battery interupts my game.
Steam deck is not available everywhere so in most countries you have to buy it with unofficial ways at a high prices without any customer support so in that case ally is a good alternative.
Most likely Ally 2 will come with same screen size, battery, ram but oled screen, and better chip. Battery will be insanely good with ally 2 bc of oled.
A compelling product for those who dont have an Ally (Z1E) or are enthusiasts with money to spare. Peronally, i share your view. My Ally serves my needs as a good travel companion. I dont expect it to play intensive AAA games and have travelled with a power bank (most long haul flights have power sockets). I'm keen to see how the Ally 2, Legion Go 2 or Xbox handheld turn out. A substantive chipset upgrade+ OLED with HDR and VRR are my main points of interest. Support for hardware-bases upscaling would be great too.
Conclusion: Double capacity of battery, replacing XG Mobile Link with USB4, improved cooling system, improved SD card slot. Other than these are still the same.
Got a steam deck oled I probably won't even consider another handheld until steam deck 2 or or a windows handheld that is actually user friendly has proper suspend mode and track pads and doesn't have the performance hit from windows being a bloatware pig, I'm not navigating windows with a joystick and to uh controls
Sticking to SD LCD because I can dual boot into WIndows 11. No ready to dish out nearly 1k USD for the new ROG ALLY X - for the same price id get a gaming laptop with dedicated GPU.
Got the Steam Deck and dont need OLED. Got the Rog Ally Z1extreme and wont need this one. Got the Switch Lite and wont need the new one coming up. Dont fall into Consumerism. If you have neither then go for it.
You can just say you didn’t watch the video. The whole point of this video is to demonstrate why you shouldn’t feel pressured to buy this if you already have an ally.
its nice but no trackpads .....i dunno thats what sold me on the steam deck the controls and how they laid out the controls.to me this is important its also why i went to PlayStation and left xbox i hated the way the thumbsticks are not symmetrical and no trackpad gyro all
They would have needed to upgrade the main chip to get a lot of people to bite,,,,,I kinda wonder if the market for these handhelds will crash soon,,,seeing how prices are being slashed on some of these handhelds
I think the Ally X is too expensive. Here in Canada I can get a Steam Deck OLED 1TB for 800$CND(689$ for 512GB), the Ally X goes for 1100$CND. 1100$ for an Handheld PC(or console) is way too much imo.
I bought the OLED it's not that cheap but definitely cheaper. I got it and I think most people got the deck for the consolized experience that Asus can't match.
I dunno I think if i can get close to 500 bucks for my original with a 2 tb ssd I might pull the trigger. They pretty much fixed all my complaints. The battery, more ram and 2280 ssd is pretty huge in my opinion. I think 800 is fair the ally is underrated in my opinion and its been a solid device for me. Lets face it the US dollar is losing value 800 bucks isn't really that much money anymore unfortunately.
Both Rog ALLY just look downright subpar to me. I've got a Win Mini. Full keyboard and track pad makes windows on a handheld soooooo much easier, and I've got a full keyboard for all the hot keys I could ever want.
I don't understand this guy owns the steamdek oled witch is a lesser upgrade over the lcd steamdek. The Rog ally x have far more upgrades over its predecessor than the steamdek oled
Watch his OLED review video, where his conclusion is "you don't need SD OLED" as an upgrade. I'd say he is pretty consistent with not giving into FOMO for minor upgrades. Why does reviewer get hardware to review? I wonder...
I really wish they went for a VRR 16:10 screen, it seems so odd that there's so much extra bezel there. Fill it up, so we can put some overlays at the top and bottom, bigger screen, I dunno. Great first look!
Matte Black. I like Matte Black a little better than Triple Black. If you look at the Legion Go in the video (7:43) that one has Triple Black. So you can actually see both in this video.
The ROG ALLY X is to the ALLY as the OLED Deck is to the Original Deck. If you've got one you really don't "need" the other! But...... what gamers want, gamers get! If they can afford it. I skipped the ALLY range, much like the Legion etc they are just getting too big! The original Deck is the only Chungus I need right now!
At least they are committed to the long haul, all of the SD fanboys were blabbing about how they didn’t give a crap and weren’t going to be around long.
It's not the hardware.....it's the software. OK have a massive beast handheld whatever...it's if they can support updates and keep it alive. Steam deck does this... other handhelds...I don't know

@@entertainmentgaming8738 exactly the steam deck is garbage compared to the Rog ally
Shame it's no OLED, but I'm still perfectly content with my £359 Z1 Extreme Ally👍
I don't know if you are in the minor but I also love PS Portal design over any other current handheld out there. It feels so nice in hand.
@@celtycelluloid well, there you go:) Now we are 2 at least!
The PlayStation portal has the best design on the market.
I don't need a more powerful handheld PC. What I do need is HDR support for Steam Remote Play so that I can play games that the Deck can't handle on a handheld.
You can try Sunshine/moonlight. They just added hdr support
@@FanTheDeck A lot of people have had success with Sunshine/Moonlight when Steam Remote Play was giving them problems, but I've had the opposite experience. Steam Remote Play runs smoothly but I get errors when trying to connect with SS/ML.
That's fair and totally understandable. Sorry you're having those issues. Agree that Valve should add HDR support
Because when the new one comes, they will have added these innovations and maybe even have more RAM.
my ears are happy again
Lol I'm glad I got it fixed. Thanks for your patience!
Battery life and performance are reason enough to upgrade for me. I had a steam deck as well. I prefer the Ally.
But they changed everything I didn't like about the ally. So yeah, my pre-order stands.
Love to see this fwiw. I've said a few times, I think how they've handled the X was incredibly smart. They took all the feedback on the one hand, and on the other hand, it doesn't seem to overly invoke FOMO for the people that are content with the original.
screen size, are you happy with such a small 7in screen
@draco2xx I have both the Deck OLED and the ROG ALLY Z1X, and yes, that small 7" screen is amazing. It's really crazy how good it looks. It's just right, for real. Still, it's not that much smaller, honestly. Where people get confused is that the ROG ALLY is for major game titles like AAA. The Deck is great for lower-end and older games, indie games. That's what people need to know, honestly. If I would have known, I wouldn't have the OLED right now. I found out the hard way, but they are both amazing machines and great to have. I love having both.
@@draco2xx the 6 inch screen on the win4 was too small for AAA games. 7 inch screen wasn't a problem I had.
@stikzlevel857 exactly, 7in is still too small for AAA games. imagine playing edlen ring on a such a small screen or cyberpunk or rdr 2
I'm ready for those who are gonna flip their Ally for hella cheap!
As a pc sure, but the garbage battery on the ally eliminates its point. I just sold mine for a steam deck oled
Ally X: Bigger Battery
My Ally: I only play on it for an hour or less at a time. And charging is fast, I'm good
Ally X: Faster and more ram
My Ally: I don't have fps counter turned on so I won't see the 3-7fps difference lol!
Ally X: New I.U, 1tb nvme and upgraded external components
My Ally: I have a 1tb in it already, We are getting the new armory crate and it feels fine as it is right now
When it comes down to it for me to spend an extra $700 CAD ( After selling my ally) it's not going to be worth it
Because of Ally X, this will force most handheld makers to use a bigger battery I hope. MSI already following through with there new Claw, lets see if other follow through or not.
For me, I’m really interested in how good the battery life is. I’ve preordered and if it’s a game changer, I’ll keep it
Kill switch went with a case that digs right back into your hand
I think customer support with Asus depends on what region. As far as I know here in the Philippines Asus has a good customer support base on my experience specially with local stores in shopping malls
This seems like a very fair point. Different regions also have to abide by local laws.
I’m waiting to see Lunar Lake in action. The MSI Claw 8 AI looks sleek
I've been happy switching to the rog so i can primarly use a windows oriented expirence, but i won't be lying. There is stuff i wish was better, like sd card issues! excited for a new device, but idk about a refresh ....
Just ordered my steam deck yesterday, couldnt pass up that 15% off 🔥🔥
You got a deal!
I only use my Rog Ally for small Indies, AA, and turn based game. I don't see any need to upgrade yet.
oh nice! whatcha playin?
Got a Steam Deck with a Deck HD screen and upgraded RAM and storage. I'll stick with that until there is a big bump in performance with these devices.
You upgraded the RAM and screen? Impressive!
I want an 8-9" version with trackpads. I'd pay a premium.
Double battery life is still not going to be enough. I kill the battery in 45 minutes right now and end up on my Switch oled which will run almost all day. I would want at least 4 hour battery life. I would guess the x gets less that 2 hours which means a dead battery interupts my game.
Asus customer support still sucks. That's the real reason to skip this device.
Definitely something to take in consideration. I talk about it quite a bit in my closing segment
Steam deck is not available everywhere so in most countries you have to buy it with unofficial ways at a high prices without any customer support so in that case ally is a good alternative.
@@ahmedfayek344 True.. but I'd rather have Valve's quality that Asus's. I trust Valve more with building a lasting device.
I never had any problem with asus. But again, i can't say for others.
Nothing wrong with their service stop the cap.
Most likely Ally 2 will come with same screen size, battery, ram but oled screen, and better chip. Battery will be insanely good with ally 2 bc of oled.
Warranty in uk is still 1 year which is a dick move
Well I still agree haha.
Keep up the great work man!
Sticking to SD LCD because I can dual boot into WIndows 11.
No ready to dish out nearly 1k USD for the new ROG ALLY X - for the same price id get a gaming laptop with dedicated GPU.
say now, you know we are addicted to this stuff. we'll buy it anyways.
I'm not ashamed to say I read "say now" in K Dot "say Drake" voice.
Case doesn’t fit ally x model though ?
Got the Steam Deck and dont need OLED. Got the Rog Ally Z1extreme and wont need this one. Got the Switch Lite and wont need the new one coming up. Dont fall into Consumerism. If you have neither then go for it.
So a steam deck channel telling me I don't need a rog ally x. Sounds like I actually do.
Funny - I barely mentioned the Steam Deck at all in this video. Sounds like your own biases are haunting you.
You can just say you didn’t watch the video.
The whole point of this video is to demonstrate why you shouldn’t feel pressured to buy this if you already have an ally.
I'd wait for Rog Ally 2 with strixpoint
Atleast to make my deck be worth the selloff last month
Can’t wait for the Ally X
I'll try it, 14 days return window at Best Buy
That's such an important factor
Great device maybe the best, but over $1000 before tax here in Canada. Way too expensive.
its nice but no trackpads .....i dunno thats what sold me on the steam deck the controls and how they laid out the controls.to me this is important its also why i went to PlayStation and left xbox i hated the way the thumbsticks are not symmetrical and no trackpad gyro all
They would have needed to upgrade the main chip to get a lot of people to bite,,,,,I kinda wonder if the market for these handhelds will crash soon,,,seeing how prices are being slashed on some of these handhelds
So these cases fit both allys?
No they don't. This case is for the Ally only. Hopefully dbrand announces a Killswitch for the Ally X 🤞🏼
What do you mean? It’s the best one on the market? If there ever was a handheld you “need” it’s this one.
the 24gb is a game changer for me.
For the algorithm! Dark souls 2 plays great FYI
Thank you for participating in communication. Let us feast on the old blood of handhelds past
I think the Ally X is too expensive. Here in Canada I can get a Steam Deck OLED 1TB for 800$CND(689$ for 512GB), the Ally X goes for 1100$CND. 1100$ for an Handheld PC(or console) is way too much imo.
I said the same thing. Price sucks.
Even with the ROG Ally X and up coming ROG 2 there will always be people that will buy a steam deck over it because of the price
Not really
I need Ps3/360 emulation
I bought the OLED it's not that cheap but definitely cheaper. I got it and I think most people got the deck for the consolized experience that Asus can't match.
That's exactly what I sold my OLED steam deck. NCAA isn't coming to pc so I gotta play 14
@@michaelgrahamjr.9605 yeah and I think I heard NCAA 14 has issues on steam deck threw emulation.
I can get a ebike or a scooter for the same price.
It's kinda hard to justify
Both Rog ALLY just look downright subpar to me. I've got a Win Mini. Full keyboard and track pad makes windows on a handheld soooooo much easier, and I've got a full keyboard for all the hot keys I could ever want.
I don't understand this guy owns the steamdek oled witch is a lesser upgrade over the lcd steamdek. The Rog ally x have far more upgrades over its predecessor than the steamdek oled
So what is it you don't understand then?
Did you miss the whole first minute of the video?
Watch his OLED review video, where his conclusion is "you don't need SD OLED" as an upgrade. I'd say he is pretty consistent with not giving into FOMO for minor upgrades. Why does reviewer get hardware to review? I wonder...
sold my rog ally to buy this but after hearing that the new strix point nearly rivals the rtx 2050... i feel tempted to wait lol.
I really wish they went for a VRR 16:10 screen, it seems so odd that there's so much extra bezel there. Fill it up, so we can put some overlays at the top and bottom, bigger screen, I dunno. Great first look!
I agree 100%
Buy one of these or a $549 z1 extreme that’s what I want to know
Steam Deck is all I need till we get a Steam Deck 2
Nothing wrong with that
Id be open to purchasing it several months after release for sale or open box for $600
Still cheaper and more usable than the stuff from overseas like ayaneo and one x.
How much battery can you get out of the ally how many hours compared to the steam deck?
Channel name fan of deck.. I’m sure he’s not bias at all
What did I say in this video that is incorrect or biased?
You know, you can be a fan of more than one thing at a time
@@MrWill9894 lol bro be real man he’s total bias. There’s nothing wrong with being bias just own up to it though.
@@FanTheDeck did you make a video title you don’t need the steam deck oled ?
Waiting for Ally 2 X
Ram alone should be a noticible upgrade. I wish a new cpu too but thats okay. XG mobile is already overpriced and very hard to find.
I usually sell my devices for the new one after 12 to 18 months. Warranty isn't really an issue for me.
Does that case cover any of the exhaust ports
Matte black skin or Triple Black? Which one is the one in this video?
Matte Black. I like Matte Black a little better than Triple Black. If you look at the Legion Go in the video (7:43) that one has Triple Black. So you can actually see both in this video.
The ROG ALLY X is to the ALLY as the OLED Deck is to the Original Deck. If you've got one you really don't "need" the other! But...... what gamers want, gamers get! If they can afford it. I skipped the ALLY range, much like the Legion etc they are just getting too big! The original Deck is the only Chungus I need right now!
I have the rog ally and the legion and the claw i prefer the claw because of the battery then the legion for obvious reasons
Was thinking to sell my legion go but I like my legion so much with the big screen to sell it.
Don’t, you will struggle to go to a smaller screen
I like the new Rog but I just love my steam deck too much to bother rn :O
At least they are committed to the long haul, all of the SD fanboys were blabbing about how they didn’t give a crap and weren’t going to be around long.
Im gonna get this regardless. Because its worth getting. Also getting ally 2 when they decide to release it in the next year or 2
I’m thinking about getting a handheld system. Should I wait for a next gen system?
At this point, it's the smarter option. These companies are just figuring things out.
It's not the hardware.....it's the software. OK have a massive beast handheld whatever...it's if they can support updates and keep it alive. Steam deck does this... other handhelds...I don't know
They are windows PC's. All you need are normal windows updates and gpu drivers. There is nothing else they ever have to do.
@cheeeeezewizzz sounds lazy lol
