    The benefit of this existing is that it gives pressure for valve and lenovo to increase the ram and battery size of their next gen handhelds.

      I mean I don't see how valve is getting pressued when with more battery size they're barely matching steam deck oled battery life but sure, you can make an argument about lenovo feeling left out.

      @@HearMeLearn SD didn't really have that good battery life if you play more demanding games. Maybe 20 minutes more, tops. If you compare those games then the Ally X comes out far ahead, and let's be honest. I could be completely wrong, but I think it's fair to assume those who play on the Ally use it for more demanding games. I honestly think the increase in Ally X will make Gabe put on his thinking cap again to push the envelope further.

    I still feel the Steam Deck is the better of the products, but Asus with its ROG Ally are compelling, especially with how it's been slashing its price point.
    Valve for the most part has the quality control, mostly thanks to SteamOS and the price is a bit more compelling, but the hardware is started to get dated, rivals offer better hardware specs and in the case of Asus, the price point is quite competitive, if they sort out the quality control and OS aspect, the ROG Ally would be a better product then what Valve is offering with the Steam Deck, and that gap will widen the longer it takes for Valve to release a Steam Deck 2 or if Valve isn't aggressive enough on slashing prices.
    The simple truth is, SteamOS is the main selling point of the Deck, take that out or if rivals have a compelling interface, things could start to change in rival's favour, especially with Asus that have been aggressive on lowering the price point.
    I also think this is why Valve are not releasing SteamOS to the market for rivals to use, they likely know it's the main selling point of the Deck, but it's a bit short-sighted of Valve, with SteamOS, they've had a massive opening to shift gamers from Windows to Linux, but they are not taking it by pushing SteamOS to be more open for rivals to use it, in other words, forcing them to make their own solutions through Windows, which are getting better all the time.
    Then there is the noise about Microsoft planning on doing a streamlined Windows with a portable interface for these portable devices, if they do and it works well, Linux market share could start to go back in decline because Valve didn't push SteamOS hard enough when they had the chance, and let's be blunt about this, if we have a streamlined WIndows OS and interface, a lot of us will switch back because you will have 100% games compatibility without any of the issues of the translation layer.
    Seriously Valve, what on earth are you playing at lol, they've been pushing gaming on Linux for decades now and now they've got an opening to do so that actually works and yet Valve isn't taking advantage of it by pushing hard for market share by trying to get SteamOS on as many devices as possible, I mean seriously, it's been 3 years with no signs of Valve opening up SteamOS to the market, and that one move whiles in the short term is an advantage to Valve with the Steam Deck, it's likely going to backfire on them once Microsoft gets its act together with Windows and then Valve is back to square one with Linux having little to no market share, when you get this kind of opening, take advantage of it as quickly as you can before your rivals wake up, something Valve is clearly not doing and it might already be too late.

The ROG Ally crushes all the really high-demanding games the Steam Deck can't even begin to try and run. But the small games are great on the OLED. But I prefer the ROG Ally. Sure I could get a big battery bank and carry that with me or leave it plugged in but I don't like having cords attached to my handelds while I game it's annoying at least to me.
    All the rest of the stuff they added is a bonus. I like the better grips as I never felt like the ally was the most comfortable to hold. The extra RAM is nice as we can now just max the VRAM to 8GB and still have almost 16GB left for Windows and the game. Also nice they doubled the SSD I was constantly having to remove games as I'd run out of space. Excited to get mine and get some gameplay videos and comparisons out. But the 22 feels so far away.

    If Steam can make the Steam Deck 2 as powerful as the Asus ROG Ally, it will be game over, but I doubt they will or can. I love the Deck OLED, but I'm glad I have the Asus ROG Ally Z1X for the really demanding games because the Steam Deck just can't run the AAA titles. The Asus ROG Ally, though, is very good at running them, especially plugged in.

    9:46 the X has USB4 not TB4. TB is an Intel thing. Also the bandwidth is 40GB/s on USB4 or TB4 vs the 60GB/s from an XGM or Oculink port. So it's not double as you stated. Vanilla Ally? The better term would be OG Ally imo.
    Also VRR on OLED displays didn't become a thing until this year. They can't just make it out of the blue if the tech isn't ready yet and it probably won't be until a few more years when it comes to handhelds. Hopefully with the Ally 2 it will come with a bigger screen option. It could be LED or mini-LED for all I care just as long as it has VRR. OLED would be nice but it won't be a requirement for me and I have lots of OLED displays myself.

    • @FanTheDeck
      @FanTheDeck  5 месяцев назад +2

      I did mistakenly say TB4 a few times. Good catch and sorry about that. I use both Vanilla and OG Ally in this video. I don't see a problem with either term.
      Agreed that it's a new thing - like I said, there's no 7" OLED VRR. If anyone _could_ be at the forefront of this, it'd be ASUS seeing as they have the first OLED VRR laptops. But I think I wrapped up most of the important context in my 15-30 seconds discussing it.

    Peronally, i share your view. My Ally serves my needs as a good travel companion. I dont expect it to play intensive AAA games and have travelled with a power bank (most long haul flights have power sockets).
    I'm keen to see how the Ally 2, Legion Go 2 or Xbox handheld turn out. A substantive chipset upgrade+ OLED with HDR and VRR are my main points of interest. Support for hardware-bases upscaling would be great too.
