So how does the mount perform with the motors directly connected to the axis rather than reducing with belts? How well does it guide, and the peak to peak error with it? I have been interested in buying a G11 and selling my Atlas to do an OnStep conversion, but I am still unsure on if it is better to do a direct connection or use belts to reduce it.
    Thank you,
    Caleb

Hi Caleb! The reason to directly connect the motor to the end of the shaft is to reduce high frequency noise and periodic error. I have tried a tucked motor design and it did not perform as well. You also get higher slew rates and the ability to create an indexed PEC signal via an encoder mounted on the end of the motor. With a belt drive setup, belt forces result in a bearing force that can create periodic error. I.e. you are pulling down on the end of the worm. I have conversion kits available (One piece worm drive, spring load, Onstep Controller). If you reach out to me via email I can provide details.

@@precisionastro-higgsfield I'm not able to purchase a G11 currently, but it has always been of interest to me to buy one and tinker and mod it to get better numbers. I've always loved how solid the base of that mount is. But once I get a G11, I'll have to contact you for that.
