  • Zinnia's first 'reel' experience with free-flight came with this simple, sheet balsa towline glider. The 26" model is based on this 36" sheet glider by Ron Warring from 1959. The film includes a few details of a new towline winch, using a 20:1 winder. Tutorial on making a similar winch for towline: • Free-Flight Basics #10...

    What a beautiful moment for both of you. She will always remember it. Dad and I built a stick and tissue about 45 years ago on our card table. I'm 50 now. He always flew C/L but I will never forget that little glider covered in purple tissue as she will remember this forever. Thank you so much for sharing your hobby and passion with all of us and especially with her.❤️

    Fantastic video! I have never gotten over the urge to run after my plane. But do you see how high she kicks her heels and lifts her knees? That is the key to not falling down and breaking 7 ribs chasing after your glider.

    Add a small 'flag' - a short piece of cloth to the towline just below the ring and it's drag will help it unhook better on release. Takes off like a rocket under tow!
    Hope you two enjoy many trips to the field to fly! Some day she'll be 34 and hopefully you' ll both look back fondly to when she was little and you flew together.
    This is the kind of thing that makes up your life. A tiny balsa wood glider and days flying with your kids!

    This simple model looks amazing. Reminds me of the time I made a keilkraft wisp. I remember bring it to a picnic and I left it on a table. When I was gone 2 curious kids have gotten their hands on the wisp. It looks like they broke it to bits from playing with it! The only parts remaining was the body, peices of wood and tissue littered everywhere. I might build this as a stronger alternative

  • @williamrobinson7435
    @williamrobinson7435 Год назад

    Wonderful! Depend on it Tom; Zinnia will NEVER forget the first glider flights with Grandad. These kinds of memories cannot be bought in a box, they come moments exactly such as these. I v much like this Jedelski wing, combining strength with a really capable airfoil section. I remember a small 'pod and boom' bird from Kiel Kraft, called Gnome - the wing was built up and tissue covered. Had I fitted a wing like this I'd have had more success (I was into dangerously insane bungee activity).. I'd put a rubber band on the (up) elevator, then air resistance would suppress it for the dangerously insane bit (or, perhaps, 'launch'), then it would do a loop and glide beautifully. That was the theory, anyway, but we can't ALL be genius aeromodelers, and thanks to you and your channel, we can all enjoy aero perfection vicariously, and without incurring the wrath/amused contempt of golfers, dog walkers etc.. A lovely film Tom. 🌟🌟👍👍

    Back around 1959 or 60 (middle school years) I built a very similar all balsa glider from plans in MAN. It was called ELROD and flew great…with the added excitement of being JetEx powered! What could be better? All sheet balsa construction coupled with the frustcitement that was JetEx powered flight! 😅

    Beautiful video! I really appreciate sharing your knowledge about building such gorgeous and efficient plane. Excuse my "newbility", but why would you put the hook slight off-center (to the left)? Also, and maybe I apologise if the answer is in another video, how do you build the ribs? Finally what would be the necessary toolkit to start building a wood plane? I have no idea where to find those pins you use at the beginning to hold the wings.

    • @maxfliart
      @maxfliart  11 месяцев назад +1

      Thx. The offset hook helps to keep the model straight during the tow, but it also might require some slight rudder adjustments. Every model is different. The ribs for this wing were simply wedge shapes made of 1/16" sheet balsa. The pins shown are no longer available (a 1990s cottage industry that didn't stay in business too long) but other pins can be found at hobby shops or on the web. Search for "modeling pins". Other model supplies can found at Easy Built Models or Volare Products...web addresses in the description above. Easy Built also has a section with many modeling tips.

    • @maxfliart
      @maxfliart  Год назад +3

      Thx, Jeff. Initially, I added clay on top of the nose until the glide was smooth. Then I cut out a divot under the tip of
      the nose and sunk the same amount of lead in there. I then covered the cavity with balsa and sanded it smooth to hide it all.

      I'd say yes, go with what feels good to you. I'm sure there's a perfect airfoil for these birds, but I've never searched them out. Not too scientific, but they seem to fly well enough, and I enjoy it, so that's plenty for me.
