This was an excellent film. It had the most disturbing denouement I have ever come across. Black Death (2011) proves you don't have to have disgusting special effects to terrify an audience!
Apart from the obvious casting parallels, the moral greyness reminds me of Game of Thrones. Both sides are evil in their own way, and the little people get caught up.

One side abhors religion so they’re fanatical hatred drives them to punish and execute believers or force them to renounce. The other side abhors pagans and non believers and so they want these godless heretics killed, captured or converted. The ending shows Osmund’s heart is hardened and he becomes the very thing he’s hoping to rid from the world. Just another murderous fanatic. It’s a very tragic yet poignant end.
@godisreality7014 no he didn't. It's pretty obvious from the movie alone that there's no true good side here and if you watch the director's interview on the movie then it only confirms what he said more. Maybe you were the one who missed the point

It’s equal parts cathartic and bittersweet. Osmund and Wulfstan escape but Wulfstan’s faith is shaken and is left scarred forever and Osmund becomes a hard hearted and ruthless witch hunter.

This movie was very gritty, somber and philosophical. Enjoyed every minute and still one of my favorites.
