    Good afternoon. I am binge-watching because I am a new subby. I really enjoyed the wax paper technique, and the faux leather technique is one that I used with my third graders when I taught Elementary school. I'm a retired 32-year veteran teacher. Another idea to think about is spritzing the paper lightly with water. It helps to relax the paper a little easier so that anyone that has difficulty with crunching the paper with their hands would not have to press as hard. Little 8 year old hands have a hard time really squishing down the paper sometimes as well as seniors that have arthritis. Just a little something that may help those that do have dexterity difficulties. As a retired teacher I have to tell you I love your presentation, you keep things moving in a nice even way, your voice is very pleasant to listen to, and you don't dwell a long time after the idea has been presented and demonstrated instead of beating the horse to death for an hour. I predict you will have success with this channel.😊❤

      What great tips about easier "squishing"! I'm thrilled to know you used this technique with your little folks. I knew it wasn't new! Thank you so much for your kind words, I really appreciate it.

    Anne, spray your old ink pads with water and watch them come back to life!!!! Please don't toss!!!!!! Love your ideas!!!!!!! Just using plain brown paper bags for journal pages is great. I love to write on that paper!!!!!

    • @annekenlon
      @annekenlon  6 месяцев назад +3

      Hey, Betty! I do spray them occasionally - and you're right, it does extend the life of the pad for a while, at least. Yes, writing on the grocery bag paper is SO satisfying, isn't it? That's what I used for pages in my first junk journal three years ago! (when we were all housebound and had lots of grocery bags from curbside pickup!)

      @@annekenlon My ink pad was a little dry when I was doing the scoreboard thing & I sprayed it (I think you mentioned Pam from the Paper Outpost & I learned to spray the pads from her) & kind of smeared the wet pad across one piece of scored paper & it came out pretty too.

    I wish I could add a photo. I tried your scoring technique on a three different pieces and they are all so beautifully interesting. The first was on a small piece of printer paper I had left over that I had added a mix of ink sticks colors of browns, turquoise, and pinks/fuchsia. I scored the piece and ran my walnut ink pad heavily over the scoring. It made a beautiful piece. The second was a page out of an old book I am using to make my first journal. Cutting out pages to make room for the journal (a technique I found here on RUclips). I decided to try your technique on one of the pages. The pages are a fairly thick off white with black ink instructions and pictures. I scored the page as you did, then used my walnut ink pad and heavily swiped it over the page. With this page I made an envelope like the one of your youth book, what a beauty it is. The pictures and writing became an interesting design to the page. The third I made as the first but on full card stock printer paper. Thank you, they are all so beautiful. I will also be using the wax paper surprise, I really like that one too.

    So funny how suddenly someone that you’ve never heard of before just pops up in your feed, it seemed like your video popped up for quite a few of us. I love the wax paper idea, I have to try that. I don’t know if I have any paper bags but I’m going to try it on coffee dyed paper and see what it does. We used to make that faux leather look with grocery bags when I was a kid, 1000 years ago, after the horse and buggy brought us home from the grocery store, but we used shoe polish as the ink. Sounds like by using the hair conditioner it was almost a form of momigami where you put the lotion or hair conditioner all over the paper before you crumpled it up and then you crumple and crumple, and make it all soft and fabric like almost. 😊

    My favorite new to me idea was the waxed paper. The grocery handle #1 was good too. The other grocery bag handle comes in long rolls. I love it as a medium. My favorite project with it was weaving it around a long tube and making a wreath. I taught it for several years at a family conference. The women called it the heart attack wreath but they always came back. I love technique tutorials.

      Great tip on the conditioner, thanks! I've not had a problem with the hair conditioner turning on me, but then as I mentioned, I don't really use that step anymore. I've never tried hand cream - agree that I'd probably avoid that, as I've had some years-old hand creams go sour right in the tube, then you run across it in a drawer and try it and eeew! Thanks for watching!

    Ok. I came here by way of 3/22 video of flowers made with strips and stamped. I reference that purposefully. 😂😂😂
    Anyway, great great ideas!!
    I crumpled copy paper and used various colors of ink (a Pam video sometime back). I have seen them recently and though they are quite pretty and colorful, I like the idea of two-times now that I’ve seen this video.
    I had some dry inks from non-use and tried spritzing then adding glycerine. Too much glycerine. Some inks totally changed colors. Seems it brought out base pigments or something. Anyway, I tried them on a tea dyed paper using stencils. The paper got really soft and felt damp for quite some time. I think glycerine is in lotions (esp hand which I’ve seen used for faux leather). So I guess that’s what I ended up with. I ordered new ink pads and some different colors as a result. I’m holding the messed up pads. Sigh.
    Anyway, this video was packed with ideas … big time. I end up with so many ideas but balk at creating things. I need a plan, a strategy! Or “just do it”!
    Lots of things here to try! TFS ❤❤❤❤

    The waxed papers truck reminded me of how we use crayons or candles to mark on paper or eggs as a resist. I wonder what will happen if you paint over this paper bag after this treatment. Will have to check this out.

    love these ideas but in my state you have to use reusable bags or pay for each grocery bag. You should also review faux leather paper using glycerine very similar to hair conditioner.

    • @annekenlon
      @annekenlon  5 месяцев назад

      Yes, the grocery bags aren't quite as plentiful as they used to be (and environmentally, that's a good thing). The same technique can work on brown craft mailing paper. I've even done the wax paper technique on plain white drawing paper with a similar intriguing result. Thanks for watching.

    Hi there, great techniques. Will the wax create a resist for dyes, maybe try different mediums like sprays, watercolours dribbling down? 😊

      Thanks so much, Valerie - I'm thrilled to have you aboard! I do spritz the pad with water frequently, but I think it's starting to wise up to my trickery and is holding out on me! I've had it for years, so I don't suppose it owes me anything. Thanks so much for watching!

    Great techniques, curious if you were to use dye sprays or other ink applications if the waxy markings might act as a resist? What fun, thank you for sharing! 🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋

    • @annekenlon
      @annekenlon  5 месяцев назад

      I've not tried the resist technique yet, but someone else mentioned it as well. The surface is perfectly smooth, and you can write easily across it, so I tend to think the resist factor wouldn't be there, but you never know with inks - I'll try it soon! Thanks for watching, I really appreciate your interest!

    Marvelous ideas! Regarding the ironed wax paper: can the wax paper, itself, be used in a journal, or is still too waxy? It has an almost rice paper look. Thank you!

    • @annekenlon
      @annekenlon  6 месяцев назад

      Thank you! I found I can still easily write on the wax-marked paper with an ordinary pen, so it's great to use in a signature as a writing space. I mentioned in the video that it's not sticky, but I checked it again just now for write-ability - it's fine!

    Oh Wow ! these are fantastic techniques ! Please tell me what sewing machine do you use for those stitches !!??

    • @annekenlon
      @annekenlon  6 месяцев назад

      Thanks, Rachel! I Use a Janome sewing machine - it's not as fancy as many machines, but it's decent quality. I bought it for quilting almost 20 years ago and have rarely given it a rest that whole time. Most machines now have at least a few fancy stitches on them. It's really worth trying. My Janome doesn't seem to mind switching back and forth between paper and fabric - I do get it cleaned regularly!

      @@annekenlon Thank you so much ! do you use a certain type of thread ? I have tried the brother and singer machines but my thread keeps getting tangled or just breaking ! I really want to sew my papers for my journals ! Ugh !

    • @annekenlon
      @annekenlon  6 месяцев назад

      @@rachelgale54 I just use ordinary Coats & Clark thread, the same standard thread everyone uses for sewing. I have found that if the thread is VERY old, it'll break - which is why I don't buy vintage thread at estate sales. You may want to check to make absolutely certain your machine is threaded correctly and the bobbin is firmly seated. Also, check the tension on the machine to make sure it's not too tight. I'm no expert, but I'm sure you will figure it out! Have fun!
