Bro i stopped the video when you started talking about a license to modd these titles. BRO THESE GAMES ARE LITERALLY UNSAFE TO PLAY BRO BECAUSE OF MODDERS AND HACKERS ON THE GAMES DUDE. Like really, dude i used to hold this channel and such high regard and to see you giving Activision the biggest Hawk-Tua of any other content creator on any platform (including Jev, espresso, faze members on twitter, and many many more that have come out and said something about this) its sad bro. The modders made a mod to allow people to experience an old game safely.... the fact that you said " I just got put back in Activisions good graces", then proceed to say someone else is biased is hilarious, and pure hypocrisy. Must be Nice being on the Activison payroll.

Surprising that you didn't mention that the ENTIRE battle royale genre (aka fortnite, warzone, etc) all spawned off a mod, too. Day Z was originally an Arma mod, playerunknown created a battle royale mod of Day Z (mod of a mod), which then turned into its own game and resulted in its own insane popularity, followed shortly thereafter by fortnite, which then inspired warzone. Activision's own massive cash cow exists due to the modding scene. Feels like that would've been the perfect example given the context. CSGO and League are good examples too, but not directly tied to ATVI

I work on a mod called Skywind, which is a Skyrim mod that aims to remake an older Elder Scrolls title called Morrowind in its entirety. I don't believe Bethesda has explicitly said we need to require users to have both Skyrim and Morrowind installed, but we require it in good faith. So far we are in good standings with Bethesda as we have a solid communication line with them - though, there hasn't been an official endorsement yet. Maybe this is what H2M was missing? Requiring users to have MW2 installed?

    • @gerald3389

Nah, Bethesda don’t care about modern cause it keeps their shit games alive. Activision hates modders cause they want all players on their newer title where they can squeeze playtime and cod points from them.

MW2R campaign isn’t on steam, only MWR is unless you are talking about the 2009 MW2 which wouldn’t make any sense because to my knowledge they didn’t take any assets from MW2 2009, they remade assets and ripped some assets from MW2R campaign.

The ripped assets would be the issue. From what I understand you guys remake most of the Morrowind assets from scratch, where as H2M used ripped MW2/MW2R assets. Plus MWR doesn't have official mod tools and thus no explicit permission for this sort of user generated content to be made in the first place, let alone any sort of guidelines to determine what mods are allowed to be made. As someone working on a large mod project within a community that's seen this sort of event before, I've learnt it's important to try follow the EULA of whatever you're modding to avoid this sort of issue.
Can't wait to see more of Skywind. You guys are setting the standard for large scale mods.

The thing I find most absurd about all of this is the idea that H2M was ever going to have any impact on BO6. Activision has no reason to believe that, nor does the player-base and community as a whole. Realistically speaking, MW2 is old news and we already got the maps remastered in MW3 2023 not even a full year ago. Anybody who wants old Call of Duty does not really care about new Call of Duty and vise versa. Nobody who loves Warzone and MW3 are gonna drop everything for this remaster. Those who appreciate both will simply play both BO6 and MW2 remastered. I thoroughly and wholeheartedly believe there’s no evidence to suggest that MW2 remastered in the version of a mod for COD4 remastered exclusively on PC would take away from BO6 numbers; that’s simply ridiculous, and Activision taking these measures is equally ridiculous, disappointing, and frankly kind of disgusting.

    • @vMicmic

another good example is that FiveM was its' own mod for GTA 5, Rockstar banned the mod and its' sister mod, and because of enough backlash, Rockstar went back and bought the group that made FiveM and then gave them freedom to do whatever they want. Rockstar also lets LSPDFR and other mods take place on GTA and do nothing. Fortnite has been exceptional with creative because you can MAKE WHATEVER YOU WANT.

The fact that they pick and choose which title to go after within the same IP is crazy. The fact that Rockstar and Bethesda allow this with almost no real involvement for Skyrim and GTA… and let’s not forget that the version of MW2 On PC is a legitimate security risk to your identity and IP address. If they aren’t going to let modelers pick up their slack, they should be willing to at least provide a safe environment to play their original product.

The only thing that I can think of that put them in hot water with Activision was that they used MW2 Campaign Remastered assets without requiring the players to own MW2 Campaign Remastered. Because H2M contained weapon models, animations, maps, and some custom maps from MW2CR - that means that they were technically allowing players to use MW2CR content without owning MW2CR. I can't think of any other way they could have had the leeway to do this, because as far as I know, modding in older games is typically accepted unless it's stuff like unlock tools which give the player "paid" content (ie; locked weapons/weapons from crates).
That being said, Activision is still scummy as fuck for starting the sale for MWR and then sending out the C&D a day before the mod drops - I cannot fathom how they thought that was a good idea.

As someone working on a large mod project remaking parts of older games (Halo Reborn), the asset ripping was an immediate red flag. From day one of our project we were considering what assets we could and couldn't use, with assets from newer games in that franchise or one's without official mod support being quickly considered off the table to avoid this exact issue. Ultimately, you are working with an IP you don't own so you need to play by the rules of the IP holder, and that means not taking assets from other games as it would probably count as illegal redistribution and is just asking for a C&D. We've seen this happen before, both within Call of Duty and elsewhere (Halo Online/Eldewrito). If they remade the MW2 assets from scratch rather than ripping them they'd be less likely to get shut down, and if they did this in a game with official mod support like BO3 they'd be almost entirely safe as they'd have clear guidelines in the EULA made by Activision to follow.
The only real issue is Activision's intentions being made clear so late, which really was unnecessarily cruel and a spit in the face to H2M's developers along with those that bought MWR to play it.

Milo, as a History point, Call of Duty as an IP had a unique way of choosing Developers for each game in the Franchise. The list of Cancelled Titles that used the IP Name can be an example of that.. 'Call of Duty: Devil's Brigade', 'Call of Duty: Roman Wars', 'Call of Duty: Future Warfare/Project NX1'... When Call of Duty first started, Activision would talk with Developers in a way that was like Crowd Sourcing, It would tell dev's were looking for the Next Big Call of Duty game... and dev companies had the opportunity to show what they had, what they could do. Literally one year a Dev company proposed a Cod title and when asked to show what they had so far, they had a soldier running across a bridge... with some background buildings and a skybox. That was it... That year they chose to use another title instead. Could you imagine playing a Spartan and going to war on horse back, as if you were playing call of duty from the Movie '300', With spears, swords , and shields. A melee only call of duty.
In a way, the origins of Call of Duty were done with Crowd Sourcing, reaching out to dev companies but only 3-4 really stood out, and its been these companies that have made every cod since then. (Infinity Ward was first, Then Treyarch, Sledgehammer, lastly Raven Software (There are others that helped with different platforms or were in junction with another studio as help, like Tencent Games or High Moon Studios)
Looking back on the Lost Titles per say, there were plenty of reasons Activision could have opted out. One game was called Call of Duty: Combined Forces, for Activision it was a decent concept its what actually lead to the making of Finest Hour... But there were Legal issues with other companies like Spark Unlimited and EA. But to make the game after Finest Hour released. It was proposed to cost 10.5 Million to start, and Activision saw it as more of a DLC like addon, than a Standalone title. You could also look at Project NX1 the same way, otherwise known as Future Warfare, it was made to be a Futuristic Sci-fi title for Cod. But for unknown reasons and an unknown time, they scrapped it. The assets were used to make Call of Duty: Ghosts and Infinite Warfare that came out in the later years. It was Confirmed after leaks made light earlier this year that Future Warfare was supposed to be released in 2013 but we got Ghosts instead that year.
This bit was even more shocking to me at the time i found out about it, Raven Software was developing a Standalone Call of Duty Zombies game, during a break in Black Ops Zombies development. They were making a game just for zombies so that fans of the franchise could have something to hold us over until the next instalment. However when Treyarch decided, we're gonna develop the franchise again (coming back from the Zombies Hiatus) They decided that Raven's Zombie Title would create Internal Competition between the 2 Development Studios... Raven put the project off and didn't Complete it, it was even left Untitled.
I personally, not proud to say it with recent zombie 'games' we've gotten, Vanguard and MWZ to be examples of experiments that didn't exactly stick with me, but i have bought cod games solely for the Zombie mode cause face it i love Call of Duty Zombies, since the beginning, and i Love Black ops 3's Mod for PC where i can play Custom Maps. Its a long shot to say this, but i wish, there was that Inner-Company Competition cause it would push the studios to simply DO BETTER, I wish there was a Standalone Zombies game, perhaps one that came with a Mod Tool attached like Bo3 so that the community to go wild with creativity. Sure it could cause issues with the main franchise to some extent, but one of the Big Selling Points for the Black Ops series was the Zombies Mode.. it's why even if Bo6 is a flop, I'm still getting it to play Zombies.. its what i love about Cod... Its why i keep going back to Black Ops 3... Hell i even reinstalled Cold War just to play the zombies maps again, like Forsaken, or Die Maschine.
Needless to say, Activision should stick to its origins, they shouldn't have Canned H2, they should have put a cease on the development for the Mod, gone over legal development side of things. And gone through it officially, Since Modder's usually don't get paid at all, and their mods make people want to buy the game that uses it, Look at Fallout Series as a very successful example, the Most recent Fallout London can be used as a prime example. (As continuation from my thoughts earlier, i had to drive home). Fallout London has been a huge success for the dev team that made it, its value is like that of a studio's legacy making moment. They made that mod more or less from scratch. Similar to how some Bo3 Modder's made DLC Sized Modded Maps.. take one of my Favorites, Atonement as this example, Custom Map, Custom Wonder weapon, Full EE with Boss, Unique Starting Room Challenge (the longer you stayed the greater the reward), Secret Rooms, More than just 6-7 perks to choose from. Fallout London is Large enough to be considered a Standalone game... and they didn't ask for people to pay for the mod, the Mod was given out for free. Catch? nothing, just Own a copy of Fallout 4 preferably on GOG since that company decided to help the launch of the mod. (there was a delay on the size of the file and they had to switch publishing companies to someone with more server space to house the mod. Among delays from Bethesda themselves.)
Speaking of H2, i can see activision perhaps taking a step back, looking at Pros and Cons of dealing with this Mod. And potentially reaching out to settle the miscommunication and misunderstanding between interests for the project. One reason for Activision to HAVE to stand in on something like this is the potential Profit making the Dev team could make. (Not talking about from donations here), Say the dev team asked for cash for the mod. (Not that they have or would) But say it got so popular that they decided to charge for the mod. It would be no different than that Steam controversy on the Climbing game that was made entirely from assets in Unreal and selling the game for profit.. making people buy a game made of completely free assets. The Mod Uses assets from Mw2, so if profit was made, the dev team would be undermining Activision. That's one reason to take legal action sooner than later. Perhaps its all a coincidence that it just so happens to be a day before the release but even legal actions can take days and even weeks to make it air tight. They HAD to get it out before the release of the Mod because if it were done after the fact then it would allow people to Clone the Mod and send it out on the internet indefinitely. It Had to be done before the mods launch, whether we like it or not, we have to suck it up and wait... hope that activision sees reason in letting it happen after taking all legal matters into account.
I apologize for the Long winded comment but i had to put all my thoughts out there on this. Specially on Milos video since i respect you dearly my friend. And not just cause i wanna play Zombies with you again. :P

Going after modders is always a dumb move, they’re literally just giving you free publicity. They’re literally free game devs you don’t have to hire. I know there’s “ game integrity “ but it’s COD, they make games to satisfy shareholders not to make art. Let them mod.

    • @Luke-ym7hd
      @Luke-ym7hd 2 месяца назад +2

Actually it’s not a dumb move in the slightest. Why would Activision allow a third party to remaster one of their old games - of which they are almost guaranteed to remaster themselves one day? Furthermore, BO6 releases soon and they know if they didn’t take it down, the BO6 player base would be lower. One day (don’t know when) all the classic CoDs will be remastered, that’s a fact. They don’t want these mods surfacing because it doesn’t make sense to have them.

First of all, I hate that Activision took this action, and filed the C&D on M2M. The information available points at this being more scummy then not, but allow me to also provide some insight that might help as well.
I am not a legal expert, but I have studied IP law heavily, among other things.
The first issue is that their mod requires MWR to run, which doesn't officially support mods. This means that you are then redistributing modified assets through an illegally modified game that you do not own, or hold any rights to, as per the EULA.
If Activision were to let this mod exist, it would create a president for modding future projects too, even without it officially supporting mods, so I saw this coming as soon as I knew it was indev.
On the other hand, if Activision had 2 years notice of the project being made as was claimed, the long time for the C&D to come through is highly unusual by legal standards. A C&D isn't something that can be done overnight, you have to figure out the nation and province/state that the team is headquartered in, then you have to check their copyright laws to ensure the C&D is enforceable, then comes evidence gathering, creating the case, and filing the C&D. All in all, this usually takes weeks to a few months.
The potential two years notice implies something more malicious to me, such as potentially wasting the dev team's time to kill their drive, and even milking sales. Activision and their parent company of Microsoft are both known for these tactics, and for being extremely consumer unfriendly. I believe they had the C&D done earlier, and waited to set the date until the release was announced. As for if the sale was set up to support that, I ask someone check when the sale began, to see if the sale predates the announcement.
Sorry for the long read, just wanting to get my knowledge out there, along with my opinion.

Consumer trust is paramount, especially within the tech industry. Doing what they've done is prioritising quarterly profits with no regard for the consumer drop-off that will have an effect on them in the years to come.

Good video Milo!! One thing for me ... You should have touched on two more aspects: first modding is super useful to ATVI Studios for recruitment (many former and actual COD devs comes from modding) and second, the fact that Activision is happy for assets to be ripped of any of the COD games to be used as "Renders" or Thumbnails or social media/portfolio... Basically this sort of shutdown the "protecting their IP" type scenario. They basically dont mind assets being ripped and used as long as it benefits them. As I said on Twitter, H2M is not the first project to be C&D last minute, sad but totally predictable as ATVI not benefitting from it beyond the sale of MWR (which now will get refunded en mass). Oh and lastly, BlackOps did get tools (minus mapping) but they were not very popular. H2M Should try make their game "legally" on BO3 as its totally doable imo.
