- Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are investigating the collision between a speedboat and a fishing boat near Kingston, Ont., Saturday, which claimed three lives and left five other people injured.
The owner of the speedboat posted on social media that he intended to “put the f…ing hammer” down on his boat over the weekend.
Global's Sean O’Shea reports.

We all know a boat (driver) like that. Looks like charges are inevitable. Speeding at night is insane.
So sad that young people have been lost.
Arrogance was primary cause. A lifetime of arrogance left many lives in Splinter s.
how right you are.
Crazy….. and I think you’re right! I hope they close the book on that family 😢
Entitlement!
got to appreciate posting comments like this on SM accounts. Crown counsel will thank you for making the manslaughter case for them...speed, poor light, witnesses testifying this is a known behaviour. Probably some videos on his account showing his exploits. Prosecute to the full extent, no plea deals..I mean, why wouldn't ya?
It should be illegal to have a boat that goes 10 times as fast as the operators IQ.
the speed may be ( and most likely was ) 10 times as fast as the operator's IQ, but the operator's arrogance & entitlement are 10 times the speed
That wasn't an accident.
It was inevitable.
Look at what boat crashed into the other one? A speed boat/ a racing boat if you must.
3 people just fishing and were basically murdered.
Speed boats in closed water areas are a death sentence waiting to carried out.
Listen to what the witnesses are telling us.
You have Details We Don't?
Impact Ejection is a factor, there are No Seatbelts
You have No Idea who died from which Boat
@@SCVM__. Well the guy bragging in his Facebook posts about putting the effing hammer down clearly isn’t in his early 20’s. So he obviously didn’t die. Did you see the pic of the two boats and hear those cottagers ? Cmon.
@@gforce9342 C'mon What? I am not saying what the Driver did was Smart in any way, You eliminated 1 of the People as the Dead.
Engaging in Speculation and Pearl Clutching is Not Helpful, I Don't see any about the Fishing Boat Having No Navigation Light.
The fishing boat engine lodged in the hull of the speed boat bringing it to a halt from a possible 60+mph in less than 8ft.
No one said Who Died From Which Boat, Impact Ejection is a factor (it's Physics)
I am from the area. 3 young women and 1 young man were in the fishing boat. Only 1 of the females survived but had serious injuries. Everyone in the speedboat are in hospital still.
@@SCVM__ Your points are moot seeing as how the speed limit was 10. The driver of the speed boat should be charged with manslaughter.
Terrible. If the time reported is correct, there is no need for speed in the dark. Condolences to all.
The biggest problem is society seems to have adopted an i dont give a F**k about anyone but myself mentality...
It's the speed boats fault, there's signs and rules and he didn't follow. Rip the people who died, unfortunate way to go
It wasnt a 10mph zone where the accident happened, no idea why Global zoomed in on that. Sounds like he was flying at night time (just as dumb) and hit the fishing boat
@@FrankBullitt390 If he's flying that boat doesn't get stuck on the other. The red boat clearly has its rear anchor light installed, did the fishing boat? Speed is the 3rd thing to investigate behind lights and alcohol.
Why did the driver of the speed boat run and not help those in the water???????
@@phylisrettig3484 😢
Blame the A Hole piloting the boat and don’t be surprised if you find a few empty beer cans lying around.
Very sad to see. Condolences to the families of those who died.
As soon as I heard speed boat and fishing boat, it wasn't hard to guess who was likely at fault. Such a waste of life (and creation of lifelong grief for loved ones) for such a stupid, selfish reason.
I hope all those affected by this have ample support and love from those around them. 👼 🙏 😢 🫂
Wow bud ! Way to kill a bunch of people including children by being that " guy " . Also why I stopped fishing Bob's Lake 20 years ago. Because people like that think it's funny . Its dangerous and no jk. I was in emergency when they arrived. The ambulances and then a helicopter. There's been more boating deaths on Bob's Lake than any other in that area because of that mentality. Almost all occurred in the same spot in buck bay.
Entitled rich people think they can do whatever they want 😢
Prison time for the speed boat owner.
Being out at night is a special kind of stupid
Respect others on the waters, respect the wildlife. Keep the waters calm. We do not need any show offs.
Sadly we found out the reason 'y wouldn't ya'... prayers to the families and friends, tragic loss.
People are nuts on the water . Speed boats and jet skis are the worse....and the worse fisherman is a bass boat who do 100km hr just to get to the next hole . Slow the fk down
People who lived around there said that speed boat was always flying up and down the docks. I hope that man spends the rest of his life in jail. Anyone else in that boat is complicit. As for the twenty years old in the fishing boat, next long weekend, will have a drink for you, may you rest in peace!!!!
I won’t even go fishing on may 24 on my lake anymore because of boats like that speed boat.
Who are you trying to kid Global? We all know it's the boat's fault.
Need more details as they come out. People need to learn to stop being so reckless.
the boat did it just like the van attack
Why good boating should pay for stupid....
Was mr. Wonderful on the lake. Just asking.
My condolences to the families that lost their loved ones. I hope the person at fault is charged to the full extent of the law
I hope the judge "Puts the hammer down" as well here. But sadly with our weak justice system he will likely serve little to no time in jail.
Racing like a billionaire.
3 people died because of this dude's total negligence, thoughts and prayers for the families of the victims
At least one of The "3 Cs of boating: Care, Courtesy, Common sense" was most likely to have bern ignored, or just plain forgotten as this was the unofficial opening of the recreational boating season. Such a waste of life, whether or not high speed, no running lights, impaired driving etc was the cause. So preventable.
Probably has money this will end up like the Mark Musso drunk driving crash will get a slap on the wrist ..
10 kph limit
A boat doesn’t climb on top of another that far at 10 kph from behind !
At night that’s just stupid !!!
Really? This guy had already confirmed his intentions. ‘Put the f@$king hammer down’. His speed doesn’t need an investigation. They should be concentrating on bringing full and proper justice to those families. What a statement to put out. Really doesn’t send the right message. Very obvious his speed was the governing factor. A high speed boat and a man with his intentions and attitude is unfortunately at some point going to cause a tragedy.
Collision Regulations Rule 6.
Safe Speed - International
Every vessel shall at all times proceed at a safe speed so that she can take proper and effective action to avoid collision and be stopped within a distance appropriate to the prevailing circumstances and conditions.
In determining a safe speed the following factors shall be among those taken into account:
(a) By all vessels:
(i) the state of visibility,
(ii) the traffic density including concentrations of fishing vessels or any other vessels,
(iii) the manoeuvrability of the vessel with special reference to stopping distance and turning ability in the prevailing conditions,
(iv) at night the presence of background light such as from shore lights or from back scatter of her own lights,
(v) the state of wind, sea and current, and the proximity of navigational hazards,
(vi) the draught in relation to the available depth of water.
It is clear that at least one of the vessels was not operating at a safe speed at the moment of impact.
tragically there is almost no police on Ontario lakes enforcing the rules and way too many entitled aholes with over powered boats.
Another "Speed Demon" unleashed .. "Why Wouldn't Ya!!!" Matty Splinter survived folks but looks like he buried his " Look at Me posts". If he wasn't brain dead then good FN' Luck now Chump!
Let me guess a drunk man was driving ??
What about the MNR randomly landing water planes on lakes to hand our tickets to fishermen????

Rich ppl problems...funny how this happened first Long wknd in the province. What in gods name are you doing running a speed boat after 8:30pm. NO CHARGES LAID YET EITHER EH? Good old Canada
Well before everyone jumps to conclusions, did the boats have lights on?
Yes
regardless, if you were going 10km/h and hit a boat with no lights on, no ones dying.
If that fibreglass boat hit that boat at a high rate of speed it would have disintegrated. I don’t think speed was a factor however none of us know so having an opinion on this is irrelevant.
@@xgrenadelauncherx define high rate of speed? 40 or 50km/h no it wouldn't have. Anything over the posted 10km/h would be considered a high rate! A boat doesnt end up on another boat like that if speed wasnt a factor.
@@joshwatson9725 I take it you’re the investigator on this one. You have all the answers.
Did the driver of the speed boat live or die ?
I’m wondering that too.
Well he’s clearly not in his early 20’s by the look of his Facebook pic. So he didn’t die.
@@gforce9342 What are you talking about ? Nowhere in this video does it mention the ages of anyone that was killed or survived . Nor does it mention who was killed in what boat or even who was driving the speed boat . Could have been his friend we don't know because they never said . So clearly you are either confused with another video or you just didn't pay attention to this one . Have a nice day : )

The third was a 22-year-old woman from Elginburg, Ont., just outside Kingston”. Clearly you’re the one who’s confused. You’re welcome.
The three people who died are 21, 22 and 23. We don’t know who was driving the boat yet. If it was the owner driving, it was not him that died.
Speed…I mean alcohol and drugs and incompetence are to blame!🤔
It’s 930 at night get off the water. One boat speeding the other fishing in the channel
The dead slow sign is the culprite.
This man should be charged with murder just saying that is totally care less and not safe for anyone maybe if the government and the coast guard actually cared they would be funding people to monitor these areas and cottage community’s across Canada and put a stop to all of the stuff people actually do on the water 99% of people brake the rules and are unsafe on boats to begin with I witness it every weekend
Get jail time ?
Y Wouldn't Ya ?
Note this happened at 9:30 PM. Being a cottage boater and one who drove day and night, I would bet ultimate cause of collision was no lights on in the fishing boat and no flashlight either. I would estimate once a month I would pass within 50' of a small fishing boat with no lights on and no flashlight signalling us their location. In half the cases I did not see the fishing boat until I was passed them, it depended on the sky light. Speed may have been a factor but I doubt the root cause. First thing I would look for is a flashlight or light switch in the ON position if equipped, remember 9:30 is dusk they may not have turned the lights ON yet.
I agree. Speed would be the 3rd factor to look at behind lighting and alcohol.
No different from the O'Leary crash caused by stargazers leaving the lights off.
The red boat has it's anchor light installed. Need to wait to see if the fishing boat did too.
Kingston sunset is 8:33pm and this was at 9:30 with no moon so it would be black on the water.
Based on photos you can see following the wreck, it's easy to tell that it was still light out at the time of the crash. Maybe it was the drunken deadbeat dad that crashed into the boat at 60+ mph in a 10 mph zone, or the beers that he had obviously been enjoying the weekend of. He also made a post with beer in hand on the boat, proclaiming he would get on the lake and "tear it up". Sounds like he got his wish, now we just need to see how many years he'll get put away for.
I have a fishing boat like the one involved in this crash . Your night lights and even a high powered spotlight don't even help at all . Needless to say when the sun goes down I'm OFF the water . To many careless selfish people around these days.
I had a similar boat and it was scary during the day and even with the power off it took time to cost to a slow even if the other boat had its lights on it wouldn’t be enough time to react also that lake and specifically that Channel were way to small to navigate at Any speed almost all boats don’t have headlights so unless he had radar he was literally flying blind that boat was ment for a more wide open lake like simco or Ontario on a calm day to much power for bobs lake
Obviously speed was the main factor but sure waste our tax dollars investigating
Waste it? People died. 5 other hospitalized. One way or another it'll end up in court. So you expect them to go into court and just show up with a pic of a boat? Let me guess you do the same. Wide open sure I used to have one but don't be a dic at night and in areas where people are also coming through.
If the prosecution wants a good conviction and sentence a full investigation needs to be done. In court it's what you can prove not what you know.
Speed is under investigation? Terrible grammar once again. Not sure if titles are written by AI or by DEI.
Go fishing relaxing ,and this, used to cottage at BOBS lake never worried about this incompetence
Of course somebody just had to be stupid
There are no speed limits on lakes, only in private marinas or a harbour that is under a harbour authority. People can put up any signs they like, but the law is “reasonable speed” based on circumstances and conditions, which is sounds like was and is routinely violated by this individual. Other violations, such as wake damage, are civil matters.
Province - Wide Shoreline Speed Limits
Some provinces have adopted speed limits of 10 km/h within 30 m (98’5”) of shore on all waters within their boundaries. This speed limit applies in Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and the inland waters of British Columbia and Nova Scotia. This limit is in effect whether it is posted or not. This rule does not apply to canals or buoyed channels where different restrictions apply. Penalties are fines up to $500 or six months imprisonment. That boater should be in prison but unfortunately the laws in Canada are weak. Evil people have more power than the innocent.
Dark with no moon on the water it would be just black. The fishing boat by law has to have lights on. The red boat clearly has it's rear anchor light installed.
If the fishing boat has it's rear anchor light stowed and not installed that boat could be found at fault.

No, You Cant Control Stupid. According to Story the speed Laws if officially posted were already being ignored.
It looks like to me these two boats were not probably made to be on the waters especially at night. There are boats that are fine to be on the water, but not all boats are fine to be on the water especially at night.
I can tell just by looking at both boats neither one them should be on the waters at night. I can see both boats are missing something very important, and I believe it is the reason why both boats crashed.
Try to imagine you are in your car, and you are driving on a highway, but your car is missing something just like both boats, and without it the odds that you crash at night should be 100% assuming other people are also driving on a highway. Very important feature by the way! :)
