Learning to sing high notes is one of the biggest goals of new students to my studio.
I'm so glad that in contemporary music, we're seeing tons of singers who are hitting lots of high notes.
It almost seems like it's a singing competition about who can sing the highest note!
But I can tell you from personal experience, that it doesn't matter how high you can sing unless those notes sound good and are comfortable.
So today, I wanted to spend a few minutes talking about 1) where high notes come from, 2) the different ways you can hit high notes and 3) exercises for each of these vocal modes.
Let's get started.
There are a lot of misconceptions about where high notes come from.
But there's no big secret, all singing and high notes come from vocal cords (or vocal folds) that are stretched.
By stretching the vocal folds, the cords naturally thin and create a higher pitch, similar to a string on a guitar.
The thinner the string, the faster it will vibrate and the higher note you will get.
Now that you understand where high notes come from, let's talk about the different modes for hitting high notes.
In my experience, there are 3 main modes for hitting high notes:
1) Hitting high notes with head voice (aka Falsetto)
2) Hitting high notes with chest voice (aka Belting) and...
3) Hitting high notes with a mix or blend of the chest voice and head voice (aka Mixed Voice).
When you're hitting high notes with head voice, you're basically allowing the vocal folds to stretch out to hit the high note, but the cords are a bit thin.
Since the cords are thin, you hear a bit of breath leaking through the vocal cords. This breathiness is responsible for the "fluty" quality you hear in the "falsetto" voice.
When you're singing high notes with your chest voice, you're basically taking the thick cords of your chest voice register and stretching and pushing more air in order to hit higher notes.
Since the cords are so thick, you hear a big brassy resonant sound, usually accompanied by some straining noise.
The 3rd way of hitting high notes is with a mix of your chest voice and head voice registers. Since the cords are stretched as in head voice, but with the requisite thickness of your chest voice you get an amazing combination of a high note with a powerful sound.
Singing these high notes with a mix is definitely my recommended method of getting to those notes for a couple reasons.
1) When you're singing in falsetto, you have very little control over your voice and...
2) When you're belting those high notes, you're usually straining.
By blending the chest voice and the head voice registers together, you allow for an even sound on those high notes that make them sound effortless.
After all, making those high notes sound good and powerful is the whole point.
In the video, I cover several exercises for hitting high notes with a mix.
They include singing lip trills, semi-occlusive "ng" consonants, "Gees", the Bratty "Nay" exercise and the "Mum" exercise.
While all of these exercises can help you learn to sing with a mix, I have found these five exercises to be the most powerful.
Can we all appreciate the fact that he is teaching all of us for free🙌🏻🙌🏻

One of the best things that happened in my music learning is you, sir. I am an amateur Indian classical music student. I have been struggling for a long period of time for hitting high notes. But magically, I can significantly see the difference in belting after learning your exercises. Respect, sir 🙏 Thank You so much.

Thank you Matt for all your amazing coaching. You truly are a shining jewel of YT❣
This dude has taught me so much in just a few videos. Ive tried learning online before, and all I can find on improving vocals is about breath control and posture. That helped, but Matt has produced near instant results for me! Thank you so much for the great video lessons!
thanks, Rosie, good to hear
Your videos are by far the most comprehensive, effective and informative of all the coaching videos on RUclips. I've learned so much and improved slowly but surely after struggling with badly worded and under detailed videos for months. Thanks!
thank u so much for this! it really helps me with my vocal. I will practice this everyday from now on💗
These are amazing exercises! I'm able to reach so many high notes now!
You sir have a talent for teaching. So easy to understand. How is this even possible. I haven’t even finished the video and the resonance in my voice after doing some of these exercises is so much improved. Thank you for making this video.
Wow. Can I say omg! You are helping me big time before an audition. God Bless you! You are so confident and very knowledgeable!
I'm really happy I found out your videos! I really love how you explain everything so well, and gives us plenty of exercise! this really will help in my vocal training! thank you very much :)

Thank you Zach, I really tried to put everything you would need to hit high notes into one video. I was so sick of vocal coaches who give you one exercise per video.
hey thank you for putting time stamps for male and female exercises :) i do this daily and this is very helpful
I'm glad it works for you
Best online free lessons I have found. I have noticed improvements in my voice with the band that I sing with. Thank you
I am totally at a loss when thinking about a single reason as to why these 40 odd people gave this video a thumbs down????
Honestly, one of the best voice tutorials channel I have come across. Am 53 years old and though not formally trained, I just learn by ear. I'm immensely thankful that I found this channel and can continue to cover songs and finding enough courage to post them as I see myself visibly improving. God bless you all for the immense help!! :)
this is so wonderful to hear, thanks

Hey Matt, I just wanted to thank you for these awesome exercises. I’ve been doing them multiple times during the summer holidays. Today I had my first singing lesson after the summer break and my singing teacher was really impressed how much I improved and how my voice got stronger and louder (I was straining a lot before I came across this video)😊👍🏻

Thank you, Ramsey, you have a great voice and you know your stuff. ❤
Thanks for listening
@@ramseyvoicestudio I like you be my teacher please
This was so helpful! Despite being a (boy) soprano, I've always had trouble hitting high C in head voice; I'd often crack on the note (Demi Lovato, another soprano, has a similar problem). I'd usually use this forced, thin falsetto, or do those sort of intentional breaks to allow me to hit and sustain high Cs and high Ds. Thank you so much!! ❤
I'm not English native, but your pronounciation is so good that I can understand all the words! thank you
Well, this is an excellent workout. Thanks a million!
Glad you liked it!
