    You cover some interesting aircraft. This one has that distinctive Tupolev interwar look. You know: like it's powered by steam. That said, in 1930 the US Army's heavy bombers were twin-engine biplanes.

    I know you said it was somewhat successful, but i cant help but think that it looks like a shed, a bus or possibly a tram and a few aircraft got joined together in some sort of misfiling of blueprints where they all got stapled together. Haha
    I mean i like it, and i fully embrace function over form. But it is an amusing looking aircraft to me

      You are absolutely correct, it looks like sheet metal shed with wings. A pretty hideous and comical design.

      It was a major failure. But certainly novel.

    Comrade Tupolev, how aerodynamic shall we make the new heavy bomber?... What?

    Hard to imagine that design got picked. Probably the ugliest plane I’ve ever seen. Good job on the history of this bucket of a bomber.

    • @zosxavius
      @zosxavius 3 года назад +3

      It wasn't all that different than the German WW1 bombers. It has some innovations too. The corrugated metal skin was novel for the time. Most planes were covered in fabric up until that point. This is far from the weirdest Soviet plane but it's clearly a Tupolev design. Some of his other planes were far crazier. Don't forget up around WW2 the soviets were behind the times in aviation design. There was nothing else like this plane in 1929. The rest of the world caught up rather quickly.

    The whole video i didnt know if i should cry because of the ugly design or laught because its that hilarious looking.
    I still cant believe it was effective... this thing is looking very deadly (to the crew!)
    Also, you cant tell by the looks if its a basic sheet metal construction for "art" purpose, a big water can, a submarine or crazy looking ship transported on wheels. Never seen such a ugly and stupid design. But i guess that makes it special and awesome
