When I listen to this solo, I say to myself out loud, what?? WHAT? I mean, are you kidding me?? It is so musical, and so melodic. It’s easily one of the best guitar breaks ever put down on tape. Grant, you are a badass guitar player. Thank you.
I met him when I was in college working at Bed Bath and Beyond in Northridge, CA. He was in the store with his wife and I went up to him and said, "Hey, you're Grant Geissman!". He laughed and said I was the 1st person who ever recognized him in public. I'd seen him play at the Baked Potato a number of times, but back in '84 he was still a sessions guy and not a 'celeb'. Never forgot that meeting or the 10-15 minutes we spent chatting that day. A true hero in my book. Class Act!
Everyone always talks about Carlton's "solo" with SD, and rightfully so, but the arrangement on Mangiones feels so good is so smooth you almost don't realize Geissman's guitar solo is a solo. I think it's equally if not more impressive. You won't get Larry to play his solo off the cuff in a music store either. To be clear I love both Larry Carlton and Grant Geissman. I just hope Grant gets as much recognition as he deserves!
I truly believe that solo on feels so good was and still. Is one of the greatest guitar solos ever played . You can tell he put his heart and soul into every note played . One of my all time favorite solos .
Oh man, I just got goosebumps watching that. I actually did, that's not hyperbole. Such a great solo, a stop-and-listen-to-it moment whenever it came on the radio back in the day, and it sounds just as good now. Wonderful note selection and tremendous phrasing. I'm very happy for you Grant, that your work is considered RUclips worthy 40 years later. You deserve it for laying down such a dramatic and uplifting bit of music for us all to enjoy.
Israel Ray Jr “Feels So Good” from Chuck Mangione’s album of the same name. If you’ve never heard it and you’re into jazz guitar it’s a must listen. It’s definitely got a sound that’s stamped with the 80s but the guitar solos are works of biblical proportions. The title track solo he plays in the video is very very excellent but his solo in the track Hide And Seek will literally set your house on fire. The most insane -and insanely well crafted - solo I’ve ever heard with a clean tone.
Man the guitar solo on feels so good is one of the greatest guitar solos ever played in modern music hands down . This guy put his heart and soul into that solo . I must say I could listen to that solo a thousand times and never get tired of hearing it . One of my all time favorite guitar solos .
Absolutely......Years and years have gone by and anytime I play the CD the song knocks me out.....Its been over 40 years ! All the solos were good but the guitar was easily one of the greatest of all time...
I've been blessed to have seen Grant perform with Chuck a number of times, and was always amazed at Grant's performance. Thanks for sharing this video.
One of the best guitar solos ever recorded. It's funny how everyone seems to be able to play Van Halen guitar parts or whatever, but I've only seen one RUclips video where this solo is played correctly (Xavi Martinez).
@@MalcaratMartinez 100% agree. I only learned it note by note and I can't remember ANY other solo I learned (and there were a lot !) that proved so challenging.
Fell in love with that solo as a kid before I even tried playing guitar...24 years old now and finally seeing the face behind it. Better late than never, I guess!
I remember when i was about 15 years old when this came out and how AMAZED I was at the guitar solo. I literally thought it was 2 guitars playing. I was wrong obviously. I tried to learn it and FAILED miserably. To this day I just can't wrap my freakin fingers and my brain around this solo. I just can't play it and stopped trying. LOL. It is truly one of the greatest solo's ever. I wasn't into Jazz during my teen years, but "Feels So Good" was so damn good and alluring that it sucked you in to loving it. I'm a fan of Jazz now, for a long time, because of Feels so Good and Geissman's excellent and creative solo guitar playing on it. Thank you sir!
I saw Chuck back in 87 and 88 in Wilkes Barre PA. I was a band student in high school. I remember being blown away on songs like Hill where the Lord hides, Children of Sanchez, Feels so good, and Chase the Clouds away.
I'm telling you...I can barely breathe whenever that solo comes up on the studio version. Made my kids listen to it so they can start getting an appreciation for this. Mind-blowing solo.
To Grant: I'm just another douche that idolizes EVH, Wylde, Satriani, Bratta, etc. But I want you to know that you caught my attention early on as much or more as any of them, and even though I don't labor over all your works or even know them, I paid to have this solo written out because it's in my bucket list, and you did such a great job with it. Love that this video exists, and yes I will also be playing it higher on the fret board if I ever get it right at all.
An American Icon right there. Thanks for sharing this. Grant's song "Choices" off his "Take Another Look" album is just one of my favorites of all. Some great guitar, piano and sax in that song. Everybody gets a turn at the melody. Check it out!
2:43 - just a stroke of musical genius there Grant to toss in the parallel slides. I always felt the solo led up to that moment, the whole song really, hinges at that highpoint. Thanks for some great music.
I've been listening chuck mangione in the 80's and l have long playings of him because o feel so good . Now utube presented the man on the guitar performed how did he played it. Pure and no edits. I love children of sanches and the rest in their album too.
His "Feels So Good" solo should be entered into the Smithsonian and preserved forever. What an amazing solo. It always lifts me up to a higher consciousness every time I hear it.
GG is definitely one of the greats and this is definitely one of the greatest solos recorded! As a little kid up until now, I always have to crank it up when I hear it. Thanks to Grant, he got me interested in Jazz and definitely an influence as a guitar player. The tone, technique and the way it's executed is nothing less than brilliant. Whoever the 6 morons are that gave this a thumbs down are either jealous or have ZERO taste in music and should be douched with Drano. Grant seems like a really cool guy too and I hope I get the opportunity to meet him someday.

well thought through solo, by grant , that has stood the test of time, a litmus test even by todays standards- i was there in the day heard that solo and went wow! iconic
How he came out with that masterful solo just blows me away. I wonder how many takes it took him. I would never even have attempted to learn it back then, but now, you got youtube and his very own website to guide you. Still not easy to master it, but helpful to see the original. Phenomenal.
I used to play it by ear and trying to fish the notes. Now we got the internet, the standard notation and tablature and I still cannot play it correctly. It is VERY DIFFICULT to copy!!!
That solo is what made me love Chuck Mangione - a horn player simply carried the melody and made the big highlight of his single a killer guitar solo. And its a BIG SOLO. Chuck made Grant's guitar solo the centerpiece of a horn player's song. Smart. It helped make the song a huge hit.
Yep. This is epic. If you play guitar you should know this solo as it rivals all others! The melody itself is amazing. The sax solo is also epic. This group of artists is biblically perfect.. The stars aligned for these musicians. This is perfection!

The lick at 2:43 knocks me out every time. A perfect way to come out of that flurry of notes right before it. I wonder if he worked this out on his own before the session, or just winged it while the tape rolled.
Can't believe he went for it! That solo just sounds almost like a one off, un-reproducible spell of virtuosity with a helping of happy accidents thrown in. Before you school me in playing thru Jazz changes though, just know I've been doing it (trying) for years. The best part is that IT SOUNDS LIKE HIM...

The fact that Grant watched other guys on RUclips playing his solo is hysterical. "Let's see if these schmucks know a thing or two"
If you play something so often it is nice to see how others interprete it, where they put the empasis on.
Wonder if he left a message on their site, they probably wouldn't have believed it was really him.
