Please continue to insert pictures of some of the bikes y'all are talking about, especially the more rare ones. I rode a lot in the 70's, took a 30 year hiatus (work, marriage, kids, etc.) and finally got back into riding around a dozen years ago and have a big hole in my motorcycle models knowledge. Thanks guys, great episode!

Same here, and it's just what I need right now. Lost a leg in 2021. Stsrted riding at age 6. Got my prosthetic in 22, working with it since.
Been on 3 so far, Ural and a Spyder. Spyder has been altered, rear brake moved using a clutch master, for a BKA. Tried hers last year.
This year, I Am getting back on 2. The YZ 125 for now, and once comfortable with that, my wife and I just finished up the rear brake mods on her late 90s Savage. Her learner when my family and I introduced her to riding.
Lol. Ironic, thinking about that. 42 years of seat time, and now, I'm the learner again, and I'm using my wife's first bike, to relearn how to ride again.
This poscast keeps my mind off the fear and doubts, that are on my mind. Deep down, I know I've got this. But after a slow norrheast winter, the 100 percent confidence in October, is closer to 05.
      Glad I found it.

Great episode guys as always. I love the witty banter between you. I laughed inside when you talked about crashes. My buddy had a 2009 HD Superglide that had a catastrophic failure at 70,000km. He spent $5,000 fixing it only so that the next summer while trying to keep up with me in the twisties on my super tenere, he came into a corner too hot. A combination of poor brakes and he got target fixated on the ditch and "yes" he went straight into the ditch. He totaled the bike and earned a spiral fracture of his right fibula. So important to ride your own ride. Keep up the great videos

I've had a few times in traffic that I've set the bike on it's side after coming to a quick stop and not having it balanced when I first started riding. My most memorable fall was also in traffic riding home from work. I was behind a large van at a left turn signal, the light turned green and we both started going. As I lean into the turn the van slammed on it's brakes and I panic braked ending up sprawled out on the road. Another guy ran the red light and the van had to stop to avoid hitting him. With more experience I would have given more space before going and swerved around the back of the van and then stopped. I also have learned to position myself to better see around others and leave room to move. I count myself lucky in the many years I've ridden.

I found Zacks story about his and Aris front wheels locking up very interesting, heres why:
I own a T7 and in the forums theres an ongoing discussion about the low fender it comes with. Off road oriented riders put a high fender on it, because they dont want the front tire to lock up. The ones who dont want a high fender says its very unlikely that it will lock up. Interesting.

My first bike was a brand new R3, never dropped it, a perfect story. My MT09 was also new, went riding at midnight one summer and was doing a u turn. I kinda rushed it and tipped over. Lucky enough I have crash knobs and only sustained very minor damage (crash knobs, brake lever, bar end and akra carbon mufler). But it's heartbreaking to see your brand new motorcycle laying in the street....

Fun fact about using the article on freeway names in CA. I grew up in SoCal and have lived in Norcal for most of my adult life. Only SoCal uses "the" in front of the freeway number. So down there it's "I was on the 405", "take the 10 to the 57", etc..., whereas up here it's "take 580 to 13 to 24, but don't get on 680". For freeways that are in both places, I have had to retrain my brain to say "the 5" in SoCal but "5" up here, and "the 101" down there and "101" up here because otherwise it sounds weird. The geography of language is a strange and beautiful thing.

Im surprised there are no stories like my service station crash.
Riding between states in Australia (8.5 hours between cities). Stopped for fuel in a small country town in the middle of nowhere. Filled up successfully, but then remounting the bike stepped in spilled diesel. As I lifted the ike off the sidestand, my right boot slipped. The bike went just over centre, and slowly tipped over to the right hand side. As Im trying to right the bike, my boot is sliding out from under me. The bike tips onto its side, with me doing the splits over the top of it.
This happens as a group of about 15 riders all pull into the station behind me.
This was the highlight of my ride home from the Phillip Island Moto GP.

My wreck story goes along with bad stuff happens when you dont expect it and close to home. Only had one jacket, zipper needed to be repaired, so I had it at the shop which was 2 traffic lights away. Was riding to the shop on my way to work to pick up the jacket, so I was being extra cautious. Light turns green, I give it a moment make sure no one is still entering the intersection. Start to turn left onto the next street, and half way through the corner a construction dump truck blows through the red at 50 mph. No ABS on that bike, not enough slow skill practice, so I locked the front and dropped the bike, better than stopping in front of that truck at least. But frame bent, bike totaled. I was lucky enough to just have a sprained ankle.

Your stories make me feel better - to know that even the pros make some mistakes. The important thing is that we learned from them. Question: When will we finally get to the point where we don't make more and different mistakes? (Don't answer that: merely a retorical comment. LOL)

Im 55 and I remember learning to ride road bikes on an old triumph boni and lovely old CB 500 twin 1974 Honda we brought off a guy from his barn.
Up until then id only ever ridden farm bikes accross paddocks rounding up the sheep.
My worst crash was taking off fast and this guy pulling out right in front of me on another bike. Hit him so hard it bent my forks and ripped my shoes in half. After that i only ever rode with proper boots. I just wanna keep my toes.

But the next to last story of Joe's was pretty wild. I have flown off the road a few times when I got too sure of my abilities in corners. But those have mostly ended up with me needing to reevaluate my skills, not traction.

Great show, guys! From the silly to the serious...
    Joe, my story:
Riding home from work (this was mid 1980s), taking a side road (the road less travelled), coming to an intersection where I had right of the way, I'm tooling along. I see a car approaching the intersection, but they have the stop sign, so I'm just tooling along, thinking of getting home. Next thing I know, that driver ran her stop sign (she was looking for an address). She T-boned me, and I went flying over the bike's handlebars. End result: my left foot was nearly torn from my leg. Exposed bone, foot bent back behind the calf. Luckily, nothing else. Six months of surgery (bone/skin grafts), external fixator, PT, and (as Joe mentioned) the loving care and attention of my wife tending to me with basic needs.
The other driver was at fault. Her insurance paid heftily for that. But... What I realized was that IF I had paid closer attention to the situation, and been a more DEFENSIVE rider, I could have avoided that accident. Easily. It was all slow speed. True - It was not my fault. She ran the stop sign and hit me. All that being said: I could have been (and have been working towards) being a better rider. Now, I don't assume the other driver is going to do "the right thing" and that I need to be always attentive and proactive.
Plus, ATGATT! No one plans an accident. "Oh, I think today at 10:37, I will have an accident - better wear my gear!"

My most embarrassing moment had to happen with an audience. As an instructor, we have to do our exercise demos perfectly or as close to perfect in front of the students as possible. This includes using both brakes, shifting to first and placing the left foot down first. Well because we also do a lot of walking, I normally wear a good set of hiking boots. Needless to say, as I was coming to a stop, I shifted to first and tried to put the left foot down, but couldn’t..... because the shoe lace was around the gear shift lever. EMBARRASSED 🙈

Sounds like you did a perfect job of showing student why not to wear shoes with laces while riding, lol. Some people are visual learners after all.

I had just bought a HD Roadglide Ultra. $32k otd... Exactly 7 days later I had just got off work. I pulled up to a stop sign. Put my foot down on little bits of gravel and sand. My foot slid out and the almost 1000 lbs beast of a bike started to go over. Once it started there was no stopping it. 1 week old, in front of my coworkers... Then to make matters worse, that same gravel and sand made it so I couldn't pick the bike up. Couldn't get any traction. So I had to have one of the managers help me pick it up. The 2 of us struggled to get it upright due to the conditions.

I've not yet graduated to "real" bikes, I'm still riding a motorized bicycle and an electric scooter (top speed of the bike is 35-40 mph the scooter is 15) but I ride them quite hard. Like for example I do two wheel slides in corners on the electric scooter, I sometimes back it in, stuff like that. The motorized bicycle I corner as fast as the geometry of the bike will let me, unfortunately the rake isnt quite steep enough for the amount of tire and power I have so I'm somewhat limited, but I can fly through a fairly tight 90 deg turn at 30 mph which for a bicycle with 2 inch tires is pretty damn good.
The main thing I've learned from my falls, is that before I try something I know is a bit dangerous, always put on all the gear. Dont just say "Eh it'll just take a second." thats when you find the one obscure way to highside a 300w electric scooter at 15 mph and go tumbling through the air for 20 feet. Miraculously I didnt break anything and got away without any road rash. I did sprain the fuck out of my elbow though.

My biggest mishap? The oil temperature light on my dash kept going on and off but i ignored it, thinking that the sensor was faulty. Turns out my coolant level got too low, and on one ride my engine got so hot that the piston rings melted into the piston. I was traveling abroad and it was impossible to get a new piston mailed during the pandemic, so i basically sold my fully decked out WR250R for parts. It was the saddest day of my life. I always have a bit of banter with my riding buddy about his moto guzzis and their reliability.
It seems he is under them more often than he is on them.. however
We were doing a Zero Electric bike demo day and some people at the local dealership had called in sick. So I turn up and the manager says look can you help me out and take out the test group for a demo ride. I look round and there are six or seven expectant faces waiting for their Zero test ride.
I’m a team player and I get on well with the dealer so I say sure but I’ll take my own bike (which was a Zero FXs) out so I’m not on an unfamiliar bike fiddling with the controls while trying to keep a group of riders of varying experience together in the middle of Edinburgh City Centre traffic with no group comms.
I get through the first ride fine and thankfully my buddy turns up and I get him to take a bike and tail the group so we can keep them between us and at least have comms from him to me.
Anyway later on I put my own bike on charge and take out one of the SRFs for the final group. All goes well, dealer thanks me very much and me and my buddy head home. Him on his Guzzi and me on my depleted FXs
I thought I had a ton of range but we are going into a headwind and I’m foolishly taking the back roads and overtaking trucks etc and the range is just melting off.
At the start I had 40 miles of range for a 23 mile journey.
At the end I have 3 miles for the last 5 miles...
So I say to him over the comms, do you mind following me all the way home I’m worried I might not make it.
And lo and behold less than a mile from the house it conks out. I mean dead as a doornail.
I pull over to the side of the pavement. He has a lemans with a cowl over the pillion seat so he can’t pillion me to the house.
So I leave him with the Zero and I jump on his bike to see what I can find in my garage to help. (Side note, it is the most uncomfortable bike I have ever ridden. My hips just instantly cramped on the thing and I’m riding with one leg out to try and help the agony)
I pick up some ratchet straps from the garage and then head back
I then have the humiliation of him towing me on my fancy electric bike on his unreliable Moto Guzzi...
I’ve never been able to slag them off since ...
(Other side note. Being towed on a bike is a bloody awful experience, don’t do it if you have a choice)

I had a Harley Sportster that had a steering lock on the front neck that I locked when I parked. It was separate from the ignition so when I got back on the bike I forgot to unlock the steering lock and it was turned to the left. I was pulling out to the left and all was well until I tried to straighten the wheel and it was a no deal. Dropped the bike right in the middle of the road. Not only was I embarrassed, but I had to turn the ignition off to pull out the key so I could unlock the steering. Then I was able to restart the bike. Messed up the grip and I ended up replacing them. I never use a steering lock unless it is incorporated into the ignition key. One more reason to not have keyless ignition.

Luckily I didn't get hurt. Bad enough that you are already embarrassed and then someone has to be an ass and make it worse.

Serious question for Zack, what did you think of the CB500X? Is it a decent little ADV , or is it high-waisted dad jeans? I own the 2019 CB500X, in the same color way that you rode, so I was giddy to see it ridden by someone who’s opinion I truly value. I love mine, and won’t be trading it in if Zack thinks it not worth the bottom shelf Dunlops it ships with, just curious

my mishap: just left the repair shop with a brand new rear tire. i leaned the bike over while making a left turn. i felt the rear slip and for some reason my instinct was to throttle out lol. BIG MISTAKE which resulted in a high side once the tire caught traction.

Dumbest thing I every did…got off the bike, started to walk away, forgot to put down the kick stand. 🙄
Fortunately it was in my driveway, she fell onto the lawn, and, most importantly, THERE WERE NO WITNESSES.

    My first fuck up?
Got a cheapo helmet in a place with crude winters. 2 months into that and ended with a nasty sinusitis. Learned to dress properly for winter riding when I managed to get out of that. Though, was left with some side effects. So, rookie riders dress properly, is not a joke when you end with life issues because of it.

I have a question, ok 4 questions. I just changed my tires myself...and not one "tutorial" on RUclips, or any other video, shows the true pain in the ass it was. My question is this: Do the experts heat the tires until they are molten? They make it look easy, like they are using old tires or they are heating them up until way way hot! So, I really have four questions.
    1) Are the experts heating them up?
    2) If so how much?
    3) My front is radial and my rear is bias, are bias harder to change?(Is that even a good Idea?)
    4) Did Henning "cheat" his way through his tire changing video?
P.S. My name is Michael just in case Spurg is reading the name off. Even he cant mess that one up.

Had that happen with my bike. I just dropped the clutch to bump start it. Then realized the petcock was off, switched it on while I was coasting, dropped the clutch again, and carried on. Granted this bike had one gear and no kickstart or electric start. (Homebuilt motorized bicycle)
