As someone who rides distance when the temps are in the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s, I think heated gloves and heated grips are both important (and not just for the “soft”). In brief if you’re hands freeze up you can’t use the bike’s controls properly if at all, and it can sneak up on you before you realize how useless you’re hands have become. The combo is what works best, as most heated gloves only heat the top of your hands, while the grips will obviously only heat your palms. Of the 2 I’d take the heated gloves, since your palms aren’t in the wind and so stay warmer naturally. For what it’s worth from a riding Canuck.

It’s true, it’s vids like this that make me realise how lucky I am to be able to commute all year. Yep in winter I have to use layers, heated grips, etc, but it’s rarely much below freezing in the mornings (a rainy -1 or -2 is probably my absolute limit though lol). I only have to worry about snow if I ride out to the alps lol
Really loving this mild summer so far in Melbourne - it’s Jan and I’ve not had to ride over 40C yet!

I was 15 and bought my first vehicle... a Honda Rebel 450. With no car, I rode that thing to school every day. One late fall day, an ice storm came through during school...enough that they canceled class part way through the day. I went out to my bike, had to use my key to chip off the ice just to get it into the ignition switch, and fired it up. I rode it the 1.5 miles home with my feet out like ski riggers. It was sketchy, and the only problem I had was the 25 foot hill I had to navigate on the way. On my first attempt, I went too slow and lost any grip with the back tire and came to a stop, then started sliding back down. Good thing it was a small town with little traffic! On the second attempt, I picked up as much speed as possible and barely made it over the crest. Then it all went to hell going down the hill in an uncontrolled slide. Never dropped the bike, but I didn't manage to stop before the stop sign at the bottom of the hill. That was a scary and stupid ride home, but has been a great memory I enjoy thinking about!

I have to agree with Zack that the pinlock visor is probably the most important item for winter riding. My previous helmet didn't have a pinlock option and I tried every trick imaginable to keep it from fogging. I ended up just replacing the helmet to get one with a pinlock ready visor. Best thing I've done.

I live and ride daily in Phoenix, year-round. When it gets above about 105-110F during the day (and up to over 120F++ on the tarmac), you actually *want* to be fully covered. Squids riding with shorts, t-shirts, backwards caps and sunglasses are actually way thermally *hotter* than the ATGATT crowd at those moments... I know because I've experimented many times, on fared and naked bikes at all speeds. The air at 110+ becomes a convection oven. If you can avoid that blast of super-heated air... and that wicked, evil sunlight... from hitting your skin directly, you stay *significantly* cooler. Also, lighter colors completely, totally matter. Albedo is real!

Once spent 2 hours riding in freezing fog: almost no visibility, visor frosted up, road was icy, hands stopped working, bike never got to working temp. At the end the fluid in my knees had frozen and I couldn't straighten my knees for some time after I got off. Ouchy it hurt when the sensation came back. Anyway, heated grips, heated suit, even muffs is now my go-to kit- don't knock the heated seat until you've tried it.

The other part of cold is the cold wind. It wasnt THAT cold here, and I went out in the afternoon with some light gear some 50 km away, i was wearinf fingerless gloves, a tshirt and light jacket in the middle of winter, but was warm in the afternoon. But I miscalculated my return time and I left almost at night and it starting to get cold. However, if you were just standing still it wasnt cold, but in motion it was like freezing. So, when arrived home, I wasnt able to extend my fingers from the grip, only the fingers on the clutch and break lever when extended and those also could full extend, neither my knees. After a bit i managed to move, store the bike, get off and walk to my place half crouched cause I couldnt fully get up. I entered my home and collapsed in the ground half froozen and crawled to the bathtub, started the hot water and stayed there for a while getting warm again.
Got very sick after that and started to carry 2 pairs of gloves in winter and extra layers to wear if needed.
    Really, beware of the cold.

Great topic. For me some basic rules. Below 50 and 3 hours or more on the road, I go heated jacket and gloves ( and grips) yes I'm a wimp. if it's below 30 I just throw on a Spurg mentioned rain layer. The weak point from then on is feet getting cold . Thinking of getting heated socks. Upper NW so the cold here really gets through.

For Very hot days: Wet T-shirt under the jacket works very well, up to at least 35 degrees Celsius. I ride with full lathers all year (i wear extra gear on the outside during late fall/early spring) and this never fails. Every 30 min, you'll be bone dry, so i bring a thermos of cold water as well as a drinking bottle, in case there is no gass station nearby. For cold days. Take frequent breaks and use warm gear.

Also, extreme weather combined with overnight 1000+ mile ride combined with animal dangers. Long overnight run from Louisiana to Colorado thru Texas to beat an early season snow coming into Colorado. Deer strike around 6am north of Amarillo, bent forks but bike was marginally rideable and no broken bones (on me). Delayed, so got caught caught in the snow front anyway, 50 miles over 5" of fresh snow on the highway. Epic ride, not something I'd ever want to repeat.

When I started riding, in 1975, my winter gear consisted of: Surplus army field jacket which you stuffed newspapers in the front of for added insulation, long underwear under blue jeans, two pair of sox inside GI surplus boots, and cotton gloves inside cowhide leather work gloves. Why none of the leather gear that was available at the time ? Because I had spent all my money on a Shoei S12, one of the first full face helmets on the market....so at least my head was protected , even if the seals around the face shield did like like a sieve in the rain. 😆👍🏍.

I had a great jacket, old pants without the rain liner. I didn't have waterproof boots or gloves or heated grips. It was the biggest mistake I ever made on a motorcycle. I didn't make it to Calgary. I pulled into a hotel in Calgary in pretty serious trouble. The funniest part was the poor girl at the desk trying to get me checked in while I'm in a pretty rough hypothermic state. Any more I don't ride when it is below 40 degrees F. Mainly because of the chance of ice on the roads. It is way more likely if it has been below freezing and warmed up to 40 than if it was warm and cooled down to 40. I changed when I saw several wrecks because of ice when it warmed up and the snow was melting, but it re-froze on the road.

Is there no other place where podcast reviews count other than on iTunes? I like to write reviews but it's not going to happen on iTunes. Seems weird that since Apple is less than half the US and WAY less than half the world-wide market share, that they are the only place to review.

ABSOLUTELY I would not EVER consider buying a helmet without pinlock. Even in summer, you get mornings where it's misty/cold and I've been riding in August and couldn't see squat because of the mist on the visor and headlights hitting it. Pinlock isn't available for my helmet so I got one of those stick-on pinlock type things and it's a Godsend. Honestly I'm almost to the point where I think it's irresponsible to even sell a helmet without pinlock.

My first bike in college 30 years ago was a Honda 350. I was in Michigan's UP and decided to ride it home, 550 miles, for break. I had NO proper gear. A ski jacket and a fleece leather vest, and ski gloves. It was 55 degrees when I set out but it was supposed to get warmer. Forecasts being what they were 30 years ago, it actually got colder and close to freezing before I got home. I stopped at EVERY rest stop and just stood with my jacket wrapped around the hot air hand driers. I bought hot chocolate at every gas station but I was shaking so hard I actually couldn't drink it.
Would not recommend repeating that. But these days thankfully I have money to buy good gear and ride at temps below that very easily.

Done the same thing with rain gear to block the cold wind. You learn from experience, been caught in many bad weather hot, cold, wet experiences and got appropriate gear afterwards. Good gear costs money but worth it. Totally agree about the pinlock visor!
I am riding next Tuesday two hours to my dealership for an oil change, brake fluid flush and new tires ( yes, I live out in the middle of nowhere and literally that far away from my nearest dealership). I have to leave out at 7:00am with the temp to be 33 degrees. I have a truck and trailer but going to ride because that expensive Gerbing gear should keep me warm and I need to ride. I don't ride if it's 95+ temps. It's not worth it. Pull over and cool off before you pass out.

The first 4:35 seconds was basically talking about iTunes! WTF?

Not so much a weather related issue but when I worked for Winter Park resort I would commute to work on the snow covered runs after the resort closed for the year. Ever tried riding a motorcycle on a ski run after it's melted all day and frozen all night?

its Dec 23rd thats the season imo lol. WTH is Spurg flipped over the y-axis again? Anyway Merry Christmas to Spurg, Zack, Lance, and whole crew at Revzilla! I have an over sized leather coat for cold weather, fits over my textile jacket. Also, I recommend keep a small squeegee at hand for cleaning the rain off your helmet visor. Agree with Zack any chance of ice or snow and it a no go. Here in NJ they also salt the everlovin out of the road and that makes it very dangerous to ride, makes it almost like a gravel road. Also, the brine in NJ is the most corrosive in the world and thats a bad for the bike. The Brits steal from India, what? Oh, tea time! BTW to all those who hit the thumbs down SUCK IT especially in this season of joy and good will toward your fellow man!

Bikes being made in 3rd world countries: They're cheaper to make there, by a mile. Almost all manufacturers are making/assembling parts or bikes in 3rd world countries. 1st world labour cost is just that much hgiher.

I swap out windscreens depending on the season. Waterproof gear is much warmer. Layers.
Spurge doesn't watch Star Wars!!!! Every comment forever more...

On the point of ATGATT it’s a matter of weighing a personal level of risk. Is the “safest” thing wearing all gear? Of course, otherwise ATGATT wouldn’t exist. Aside from helmet mandates everything else is a personal choice. An informed rider should be someone aware of what potential risks they’re taking on.
