I liked how ace stuck around for a while longer in the anime Alabasta arc. In the manga he just disappears after taking down the Billions ships while in the anime he travels with them through the desert. Especially important since we barely see Ace for the rest of the series and when we do it’s usually in a serious setting, not him goofing off with Luffy’s crew.
Do you want to start an apocalypse!? My pick is their defeat at sabaody though, it was a televised masterpiece as far as the anime is concerned. The way the voice actors convey the shock and sadness of the characters (even in the dub) and how there's a bubble that pops everytime they disappear just did a lot for me
I watched each of those moments. they are all awfull with the exception of the HCI scene. Everything just moves way to slow and the sound effects remind me of loony toones. Octa talks for an eternity with a hole in his chest. And luffy vs the admirals happened within 2-3 seconds in the manga, here its over 2 minutes.
At least it better then the toyko Ghoul anime I got the first book of the toyko ghoul series it it was 1000 times better then the anime it had to say and looked so much better
I cant really say much since I have always watched the anime. But to me one extremely memorable moment I feel did better was Robin saying I Want To Live. Besides the animation, in my opinion to be amazing during Water 7 and Enies Lobby, the voice acting done for this moment really excels at its job.
it may be my nostalgia goggles on, but the scene in the anime of Nami stabbing her arm until Luffy stops her leading into the walk to Arlong park. has always been one of my favourite anime moments. Toei did a great job there, i can't comment on the special though as i haven't seen it yet haha
Zoro defeating Pica. While there were some unnecessary reaction shots, the end of that battle was stunning to watch and provided a rapid ending to a drawn out fight.
For me personally, it was Luffy's Jet Gattling on Rob Lucci. I liked that the animation switched the scene of the pure attack to when Luffy yelled it out. In the manga, the flashback of Robin saying 'I wan't to live' was put to after Luffy yelled the attack. This detail let us experience the full uninterrupted glorious 20 seconds of Luffy launching all those punches in his final spurt of power.
For me, a recent example would be Sanji’s expression while listening to Pudding make fun of him. In the manga, his reaction was in the middle of the chapter, but choosing to end the episode right there, made the impact hit harder for me. It forced me to sit with that moment, instead of cutting to a comedic scene. Also the raindrops falling down his face and his slow blink elevated the animation for me.
Here’s some you missed: 1. Luffy vs Sanji 2. Brook’s flashback (Binks Sake) 3. Pedro’s sacrifice 4. Gear 4 power up scene 5. Going merry funeral 6. Straw hats getting split up 7. Chopper’s flashback 8. Luffy climbing drum rock 9. Sabo reintroduction 10. Straw hats coming back after 2 year timeskip
One moment that always stood out to me as being better in the anime was Luffy climbing the mountain during the Drum arc with Nami on his back and Sanji in his teeth. The anime did a fantastic job showing how painful and difficult this was for Luffy - his fingers bled and he slipped but he eventually made it to the summit - in the manga it is just a couple of brief panels.
5:55 The original Episode #126 is fantastic in every way. The climax during the battle in Alurbana and in the fight between Luffy vs Crocodile, plus the soundtrack of Dvorak's Symphony no.9 instead of some generic fighting soundtrack made by Toei like in every other fight... Seriously, as much as I prefer other arcs and scenes, this particular episode may be the best adaptation made by Toei so far. Even the end is somehow fenomenal. For me, the best scene in Alabasta saga.
I wasn't expecting you to ever make this video but I'm happy you did. That said, I know it's not amazingly impressive animation but one of the things I really loved in the anime was those damn walking scenes. Walk to Arlong Park, Walk to Enies Lobby, Walk to Franky House. They're so memorable to me as a person who went through the anime first.
Funeral of merry for me was the best. Though this is a fine list. I've watched that episode a hundred times and cried a hundred times... Everything about it was perfect the music, voice actor, the flashback, the background... Shit I got emotional already...
When crocodile starts falling down and Viví remembers Luffy saying “all we have to do it beat that crocodile guy up”, the music starts slow and slowly build up And goddamn that is the best part of crocodiles defeat, it’s the anime finally saying this long saga is over they’ve won
I was hoping to see Usopp appearing as the Sniper King to be on the list. The fact that the anime gave him an amazing musical number was always been one of my favorite moments!
The classical song used for Crocodile's defeat was already one of my favourite classical songs long before I even started watching. I seriously can't find the words to express how hyped I was when it started playing to Crocodile's ass kicking. All I can say is that I struggled to hold back tears as I did my best project my voice along to the melody, suddenly understanding why the comment section to the song had so many One Piece references.
Big Mom introduction has been one of those scenes that stood out to me recently. I rewatched it so many times. It is not that every single musical scene is automatically better than manga due to simple presence of music - this scene was just executed very well. Beautiful, colorful animation makes it fell lively. The musical score nails this 'childish yet creepy underneath' vibe perfectly.
What about Luffy’a awakening after marineford? This dark scene when he emerges from his room at Law’s boat... Anime gave it a little more time than manga but didnt overdo it and it only added to the darker tone of the moment. I have chills every time
I don't like how they extended the Davy back fight but in the end when luffy won and took all of the other guy's crewmates and fired them almost immediately, that was hilarious
can anyone tell me if there are any volumes of the manga in color? i just got into OP in the last 18 months and have just recently gotten caught up on the anime. i love the anime and have no issues with it at all. but hearing how others who have been with the franchise for years favor the manga so much more actually makes me happy. i can't wait to relive all my favorite moments on the page. this list doesn't mean much to me now but i'm really fuckin excited to start reading. Thank you!!! also, i'm frustrated finding how behind i am on some of the proper terminology from only watching the anime and my opinions and theories seem flawed without knowing the source material
What I think of is when Brook first talks about Laboon to Franky and Robin in Thriller bark. It's mostly just Brook talking, but the emotion in his voice is sublime at that moment.
I am really, really surprised you didn't include how different Dr. Hiluluk's introduction and the story was from the manga and the release on Crunchyroll/Funimation. Reading the manga I thought of Hiluluk as a crazed and bad person and there just really wasn't a connection. However, in the adaptation I was blown away at how attached I could become to a character in such a short time, and as a result my connection to chopper grew even bigger.
Merry's funeral needs to be on this list. I'm a manga purist myself but that's the scene i watch when i want to cry. The pacing between the snow falling and the serene voice of "gomen ne", and the transition of usopp acting tough to finally breaking to tears, it's just perfect
Big emotional moments hit me so much harder in anime. End of alabasta X, Merry, Binks Sake (speaking of sound enhancing scenes) chopper backstory, luffy losing at sabaody and just bashing his head on the ground in despair. Etc
It wasn't exactly in the manga but something i think the anime did amazingly was the walk to Arlong park. Seeing the 4 straw hats simply walking with the most serious expression while Overtaken was playing the background into Luffy bursting down the front door to Arlong Park was so badass. All for the sake of their nakama.
Mine is when Luffy was so down after Ace's death, and then he remembers his nakama. The anime recap the moments with each members one by one, but in manga, it covers like only double pages.
I also watched the Luffy defeating Crocodile about 5000000 times after I first saw it, and even now today. The music is obviously incredible, but the follow-up scene where the music builds while Vivi watches, and it cuts to her memory of Luffy's simple, "So I just need to kick his ass, right?"
I don’t know if you’ve done this, but you should make reviews on specific devil fruits. If you have, I would love if you did one of the Flower Flower fruit which I think is called the Hani hani no mi and how Ms. All Sunday/Nico Robin as she uses it VERY well (Edit) May you please reply your thoughts on this? I think it would work very well
It was probably noted in earlier commentary, but the music playing upon Crocodile's defeat is Dvorak "New World Symphony" which is an incredible choice of music. Episode 126 is a masterpiece.
Imo, I like anime combat scenes better than manga scenes in general. I find it so much easier to follow the flow of a battle when it's visibly animated. That and...animation imperfections rarely bother me. I also like the anime better in general because of characters getting canonical voices. I find that I really appreciate the voice acting in a lot of these big, emotional moments. Robin in particular. "I want to live!" as the best example was such an amazing moment that was only made better by her excellent voice acting. Other examples include Robin saying somber and sometimes downright macabre things in such a deadpan tone makes that joke land so well.
Yeah, I can definitely give you that. The anime' pacing has become horrendous. I understand that they do it this way to avoid having to make filler arcs anymore, but stuffing that filler into the main arcs was...not worth the exchange. xD
Exactly finally someone gets it. For me, the Luffy bs Blueno Gear 2 fight was the best fight in the entire anime to date. Best animation for a fight scene and really good sound effect.
I personally liked the moment where Luffy uses jet galting to finish off Lucci. The face that Luffy makes to stand up for his friends, and the flashbacks that play through his mind all envoke his pure emotions and concentrates that into one final attack against the monster of an opponent that is rob lucci. The manga just sort of ends it in a two panel, and like you said the sound effects don’t do it justice in the manga. In the anime version, you can feel the punches and Luffys determination all going towards saving his friends. For me, I think That’s when the anime was better than the manga. What do you think?
I have always watched anime but still I think episodes like Davy Back Fight must be anime's de forte. You can't feel all that sporty-feeling without seeing it in motion plus, you have added humour and Zoro and Sanji's strength as well (They stole the show from Luffy).
The intro of the underworld emperors is actually supposed to be a musical as there's small musical notes done throughout the intro. That being said of course the anime did it better.
To give you something nice to go into the new year with. I think you are the best one piece (and hxh) RUclips. You reply to your followers and make them feel part of the channel and for that I thank you very much
my Number One Pick wouldve been the Farewell of Merry however i agree that the Moments you Chose were improvements over the Manga... even tho you missed the obvious top spot
Didnt Zeff eat his own leg in the manga, but in the anime he cut it off underwater to save Sanji? I like the anime's version of that better, because eating one's own limbs does more harm than good and it makes it more questionable.
I haven't read much of the manga, but I know a moment that the anime included like the walk to Arlong Park should definitively be number one. Sogekings theme song should also be on the list
I've only seen the anime, but I'd have to say that the moment I loved was when Nami asked Luffy to help her. That hit home for me! The animation and voice acting for that scene was to me, a masterpiece. Oh and P.S to all who think Nami is a "Sakura clone" or annoying, you're wrong! She's vital to the Straw Hats and has had IMO better character development. No, you perverts! I'm not talking about that!
Side note: the anime marineford needed to be dragged out to be fair, as the manga version often used two page spreads with little happening, frequently.
PLEASE go back and watch any scene with Bink's Sake if you haven't already. It's been years for me and I still think about it. Music really does make a difference. Like when Brook broke down and slams his fingers on the piano. Sends chills down my spine...
I like the manga version of Charlos, since it's better paced, though the Hachi part is emotional if you let it get to you (still dragged out -- thus hard to let it do that). It's also a very nice chapter to read for the purpose of showing it off to someone who's only ever seen up to the end of East Blue, if you explain the premise/power behind it first. Plus the Movie 6 animation/art is kind of funny looking.
Walk to Arlong Park is nearly non existent in the manga. The “Luffy, help me” plea from Nami lands. But that next moment is only remarkable in the anime. The build of those tribal drums, the still shot of the guys waiting, the walk, all dominant and so evocative of emotion. One of those smiles you can’t hide.
The Charlos punch was exactly what everyone needed it to be. It's an entire world's frustration summed up in punching a worthless jackass in the face, reminding him that he really can suffer consequences.
I've never actually watched the anime (just 10 episodes) I've read the manga though. Can anyone tell me why the flashback of Roger getting executed was missing from the manha. I think it's episode 48 in the anime (the loguetown arc).
One Moment that i would absolutely have here is the Final kick of Sanji to make Oars fall the first time in Thriller Bark, in the manga it's just a small kick that takes the leg out, but in the anime that's a massive epic kick after a speed course.
Things I would consider an improvement over the manga: -Chopper's flashback of Dr. Hiriluk. -Rob Lucci's backstory. -The Straw Hats' whereabouts during the two-year timeskip. -Urouge vs. Charlotte Snack.
I loved the fight with Lucci. I know it has it's slow moments. But the fight itself was HIGHLY built up. And the sheer emotion between Luffy and Usopp at the end was marvelous. Similarly to Robin's "I want to live", we have the wonderful voice actors to thank for Usopp's speech, and Luffy's blood-boiling war cry before he finally lands the finishing blow. And that's another thing. I feel as if Jet Gatling itself was really well done. Aside from a few unnecessary flashbacks, it really captured the intensity of the scene, and every individual blow from the attack carried a monumental level of speed and impact.
the ringing of the bell at skypea, i may not have read the manga, but i just cant imagine how that could compare to the animated version simply because of the sound, the resonance
Oh my god yes let the men who directed the Gear 2nd and Crocodile episodes direct every episode and redo the anime completely, this will never happen but I wish it will. The scenes are simple, but great, more of this please

Regarding the Underworld Emperors, it reminded me a bit of the movie "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" for some reason.
I have your feeling about the final battle vs Croco-boy with the final Gattling of Luffy vs Lucci.
Didnt Zeff eat his own leg in the manga, but in the anime he cut it off underwater to save Sanji? I like the anime's version of that better, because eating one's own limbs does more harm than good and it makes it more questionable.
The Underworld Emperors musical creeped me out.
Thank you Perospero for showing up and calming down the atmosphere.
The “nothing happened” thing with zoro will always be the best to me tbh
PLEASE go back and watch any scene with Bink's Sake if you haven't already. It's been years for me and I still think about it. Music really does make a difference. Like when Brook broke down and slams his fingers on the piano. Sends chills down my spine...
Liam talking about how crocodiles defeat was epic.
Me remembering a scene from 4Kids: IM WET AND IM ANGRY
I like the manga version of Charlos, since it's better paced, though the Hachi part is emotional if you let it get to you (still dragged out -- thus hard to let it do that).
It's also a very nice chapter to read for the purpose of showing it off to someone who's only ever seen up to the end of East Blue, if you explain the premise/power behind it first.
Plus the Movie 6 animation/art is kind of funny looking.
I was looking for the Arlong Park walk, and I am a little bit disappointed to not see it here.
However, most of the list is very correct!
Every time crocodile is mentioned I think to myself, crocodiles always had the cleanest outfits.
“Now let’s not dwell on this fact for too long less we become toei”
Hilarious
I love it
I've never actually watched the anime (just 10 episodes) I've read the manga though.
Literally any of Brook’s moments. Especially that one “filler” where brook plays the violin acoustic of “binks sake”
Things I would consider an improvement over the manga:
-Chopper's flashback of Dr. Hiriluk.
-Rob Lucci's backstory.
-The Straw Hats' whereabouts during the two-year timeskip.
-Urouge vs. Charlotte Snack.
To be honest, I don't even mind the Marineford long-draws
I couldn't agree more 👏👏
(except for the number 1, there are *many* other moments way better than that, like introduction of gear 4)
I don't like the bounce sound effect
The walk to Arlong Park
Interesting fact about the music in the finale against Crocodile: the piece used is the final movement of "From the New World"...interesting.
How about the cherry blossoms at the end of drum island where we got to see them fall in color?
Probably worth mentioning Brook's last performance with his former crew. Man that hit hard, as each instrument died off and voices as well.
I still watch #1 over and over again as well! This really cemented me as a One Piece fan for life!
the ringing of the bell at skypea, i may not have read the manga, but i just cant imagine how that could compare to the animated version simply because of the sound, the resonance
Oh my god yes let the men who directed the Gear 2nd and Crocodile episodes direct every episode and redo the anime completely, this will never happen but I wish it will.
The scenes are simple, but great, more of this please
When Sabo meats Luffy (the first one not the detailed one) that was epic in the anime.
I thought you really liked the way the anime did the funeral for the Going Merry. Was sure it would be your number 1.
I like lots of things the anime did :D
"The crocodile fight had me hooked" nice pun
Honestly the climb up to the castle in Drum Island is deserving of a spot. I think I heard you say that in a video past actually.
Where can I find good videos like this but with like the actual scenes?
