Hands down THE best ever performance of this song. True the lead guitar is too low in the mix but the vocals are perfect and it’s so much better without the pause mid song and without the backing vocals. This was played in E back in the eighties but now it’s played in D but the instruments are detuned 1/2 step so they’re playing in D Flat. Kevin was playing a 1984 Collector’s Edition Ovation Elite shallow bowl electro acoustic in this show. Great post!

Absolutely...I've heard many live versions and I've never heard another one better..

wait what, they play in E here??? wild! The record is in D major though, but damn thats crazy they change keys for performances of this song

It was mostly to do with how Kevin played the acoustic. When they first recorded it he played the acoustic is Open D tuning and thumbed the G and A chords. From about 1980 onwards he stopped playing it that way and started playing in E so that he could strum the A and B chords using the E major chord shapes up the neck. From 2000 onwards he started playing it on a 12 string in Open D again.

@@leecalvinmusic yessss i noticed!! he fucks around with the open D (which i like way more especially how different the thumbing looks) the guitar has more of a chorus effect even with the 6 string when he does it like that , sounds more open and free to me, but thats friggin awesome the subtle changes

I just wished they had backup singers - its a big part of what makes the studio version so good. without it the song loses a lot of its charm

The way KC hits that last note...they were at their BEST during this tour!! Although, the "Live As We Know It" tour was great, too, because they reinstated "157" and "Golden Country."

Huge thanks to VH1 who had this as the music video version of the tune and therefore introduced me to it as a kid! Shout-out to fellow Friday Rocks/VH1 Rocks watchers.

Nice version, back up vocals were missed much, great to see how he soared higher to try to make up for it. Thanks for sharing

A more matured vocalist in KC here!! Love it!! Earlier in his career he tried to over sing the notes probably full of excitement and adrenaline but not here. Much more control. Backup vocals?? Pffff who needs them with KC!!??

You're absolutely right, just got done watching them do this song on the 70s show Midnight Special and comparing the two, this version is much better I seen this tour back I the day and Reo always rocks and puts on a great show. RIP Gary, Marshall Chirpman

I will say Dave Amato’s current guitar playing is so much better than on this tune and another I heard from 1981.
