According to the book "Riding Rockets" written by Astronaut Mike Mullane, neither he nor his crew mates on STS-36 (note that the mission was a classified Department of Defense mission) were impressed with the film. The reason why is that it not only reminded them of their fallen comrades, but they were getting ready for their flight (note that they endured one launch scrub after another including the commander of the crew getting sick, weather and problems with the range safety destruct system).
High Flight - The Aviator's Poem Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings; Sun ward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung High in the sunlit silence. Hovering there, I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung My eager craft through footless halls of air... Up, up the long delirious, burning blue, I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace Where never lark, or even eagle flew - And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod The high untrespassed sanctity of space, Put out my hand and touched the face of God.
The Seven Astronauts in 86 R I P & live on forever in our hearts..
Couldn’t have said it better!

Well it's a TV movie.
High Flight - The Aviator's Poem
Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sun ward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hovering there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air...
Up, up the long delirious, burning blue,
I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew -
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand and touched the face of God.
The who wrote it was just 19 when he wrote it and died not long after in a collision.
Karen looks more to Barbara Morgan, the backup of Christa. Bonnie Bedelia could have performed as Christa.
I think Amy Manson has the perfect look to play Christa
I remember both the actual tragedy (having seen it on T. V. when it occurred) and this movie the night it premiered.
