Ryan's Hope Final Episode Last Scene

  • Note: In the last scene when Maeve is singing Danny Boy, Helen Gallagher started to break down during the scene and improvised the bit about asking everybody else to sing with her. If you look closely at the crowd many of the actors have trouble singing because they don't know the words to the song! After Ryan's Hope was canceled, the Ryan's pub set was given to ABC's One Life to Live where it was used for another few years.

Really touching. American daytime soaps are like thoroughbred horses, they're built to run far but not to stop - so when they are canceled, their last scenes are rarely natural feeling or satisfying. Ryan's Hope is an exception though. Maeve singing Danny Boy as the camera panned character faces was perfect. Her last line was loving and optimistic.

The greatest soap opera ever. So real and family oriented (at least the first few years before they started adding people outside the family that nobody cared about). Jack and Mary's love story was so powerful it seemed real. The chemistry between them was real. What a WONDERFUL actress Kate Mulgrew was! The character of Mary was NEVER the same after she left. Those other "Marys" were horrible. They should have somehow ended Mary's role when Kate Mulgrew left. It was agony watching those others. I wish SoapNet would come back and start the show from the beginning on July 7, 1975 and show the ENTIRE series this time. I think this scene is the saddest ever in the show's history.

Bernard Barrow was with the show the whole almost 14.5 years and he should have been with Helen Gallagher at the end instead of standing way in the back. But I guess the writers had decided that Helen was the star of the show some years before when they started showing Helen by herself when the Ryan's Hope logo came on the screen in the opening credits. In the early years it was both Helen and Bernard.

I discovered "Ryan's Hope" during the summer of 1988, when I was fifteen. I already knew about the soap before then, but I never bothered to watch it. Just when I really started to get deep into it, ABC announced its cancellation in the fall of 1988. I wanted to skip school to see the final episode, but I couldn't bring myself to do that. I really enjoyed watching the early episodes on SOAPNET, because I really love anything that has to do with the 1970's. It would be nice to see the whole series from beginning to end.

I really loved how Claire Labine & company wrote at least half of the final plot twists with the feeling that life was to go on beyond the series' end. Siobhan is afraid to love again, and sees a professional and personal partnership with Fenno as a risk. Does she find happiness with him on both levels? Will Faith come forward with the paternity of Grace? (We all know that Pat IS the father.) Will Roger and Dee make it the second time around? Does Maggie stay in NY to be a thorn in their side?

All of these questions and more basically prove Labine's prupose, stated above. ABC thankfully let RH go at a time when a visionary of the show was back writing, who could close things up the way it was meant to be.
Poor Louise Shaffer..because RH did not run a cast crawl on the finale, she did not get to be credited as Rae Woodard. Was that Jan 11th episode with the "faux" credits" actually the last cast crawl day?
In addition to the pub, OLTL also claimed Jim Wlcek & Yasmine Bleeth.
