What picks are you guys using and why? I love 0.73s 🤷♂️ If you guys liked the tones in this video, you can check out the Hynotone Ares Distortion Pedal here: www.amazon.com/dp/B0DHGPKDRP
I also use the standard 0.73mm for most of my playing, though I have started using the Jazz III M (0.88mm) and have quite been enjoying them for certain styles. I also find them easier to play with on heavier gauge strings vs the 0.73.
I think picks are actually a topic where comfort matters more than tone. I've tried tons of different picks, but the only ones I really feel comfortable on are the Dunlop Nylon .73/.78 picks (I don't know why they have two sizes so close). These picks just feel like home to me and I can't play as well with other picks. I started using the Fat Mike .60 nylon picks for bass and I like those too.
I gotta say, I really disagree with your conclusion about what affect the thickness of the pick has. To my ears, the thinner the pick, the more of a compressed sound you get. You get essentially the same note sustain, but the attack is much less. It's much softer and much more consistent.
My ears told me the same thing. It felt like the response and....idfk the right wording but the definition of the beginning of notes was sharper or more defined as the gauge increased, and then at the top end it rounded back out.
I think the 1mm flows are the best picks, they still have a little snap to em as the sharper tip gives you less resistance and that same pointy tip is way more precise than a regular pick's rounded tip for fast runs and shit like sweep/economy picking
First ones i bought, they´re super good, also i love 1.20mm of harley benton, i learned with those and work pretty well for triplet fast runs and playing metal in general
Really love the TORTEX TII 0.73 but recently swapped to the 0.88. For me te sound difference is not so subtle. The low mids are more pronounced with the 0.88. Still not sure which I like te best, I’m a rhythmic player exclusively, I play in Eb/Drop C# with 10 52 string gauge, and for sure the 0.73 gives me the freedom to push harder on the strings without any pitch issue. Really interested in your point of view about. Nice content as always, cheers!
I’ve settled on Tortex Jazz iiis 1.35mm. I originally decided to use jazz 3s because the Periphery guys all use them lol, but also they helped me to learn pinch harmonics much easier because it forces your thumb to be closer to the strings. I’ve found that I don’t like the pick to flex at all, hence why the 1.35mm felt most comfortable for me. However I want to switch to the Max Grip ones soon because tortex wears down way too quickly
You should do a video on picks from Attak Piks. First time in a long time a pick really changes the way I play. I myself prefer thicker picks and thicker strings, and always have. I guess for most people the noticeable difference isn't audible.
i use D'Addario Duralin 1.50mm i cant use anything else. Anything less is too floppy for me and i feel i lack control as a result of that floppy if that makes sense.
I have a bowl on top of my rack with a stash of Dunlop .73mm .88mm and 1.14mm plectrums in it and just grab one. The .73mm does feel better on acoustic though
Haven't watched yet, but my imidiate answer is that it depends on your goals. If you want to shred, then it absolutely matters. But if you're just looking to strum a couple of chords to play along to your favourite songs then no, probably won't matter too much for you. Edit: Also, I'm a crazy person who uses a 6mm pick, so I recognize I'm a bit of an outlier here 😂
For me the biggest difference was when switching from 0.73 mm to 0.88 mm, especially on low tunings like drop G# I swear I could hear a lot more high end with the .73 in djent riffs especially. Also killer track!
Posting before watching. I am actually really curious about this, as i've been a .73 yellow tortex user for like 20 years. Post watch edit: Okay, whoa. That's cool. Interestingly enough at 9:30, my ears almost felt it the other way around. It felt like the response got tighter/sharper as the gauge increased (Im also a fuckin wierdo so grain of salt and all that). This was a really cool video man. Never thought much about the pick. My dad used the 88s religiously and I went 73 because it felt better. Stuck with em ever since.
Amazon Dan's Guitar Store - Precision Pick 0.70mm - 10-pack Grippy Precision Medium to thin High-Visibility Plectrums for Professionals I got these bad boys today . Just trust me on this one , look at the pointy nib and it's got good grip . I'll leave it there
I wasn't using headphones still I could hear that thicker pick had more more weight to the tone, the differences are quite noticeable, now I wonder how much the material impacts the tone
.6 and .88 and purple for me. All for different uses. I’m not a tortex guy tho, I think their material hasn’t impressed me after trying like a big variety of other picks.
Probably stiffness. A stiffer pick is going to waste less energy bending back from impacting the string and then back into place, making it so that more energy is transfered to the string, which should have a similar effect to just picking harder with a less stiff pick.

.73 regular tip?
jazz 3 2mm

Regular and Jazz 0.73s are THE perfect picks imo
No need to watch, the answer is yes !

1.14mm gang where you at?

Here🤚

I use Ernie ball prodigy picks. 1.5mm and love them. Good grip, nice tone.
They feel good, I switch between them and jazz 3s
THATS WHAT SHE SAID 🥳
I use the prodigy picks. I like to sharpen the points. And scratch in cross hatches on the grip to keep from slipping...
I would love to see a similar comparison with the same pick shape, same thickness, different materials.
A good Nolly trick is to use thinner picks for Bass, makes the DIs more even so less compression is needed
Also sounded like what was happening here.
Especially the rhythm examples were very even, mellow and didn't have much attack with the softer picks.

I use basic fender picks when recording, and use 2.0mm prodigy picks when playing freely or recording solos

.60 for crisp attack, light strings, lower tunings is the best!!!
i use D'Addario Duralin 1.50mm i cant use anything else. Anything less is too floppy for me and i feel i lack control as a result of that floppy if that makes sense.
What pups you got in that ET7 lad? Love that guitar
1.5mm and 2mm here. the only pick that I've used that made a difference in tone were Ultex/Ultem but only on clean tones.
I have a bowl on top of my rack with a stash of Dunlop .73mm .88mm and 1.14mm plectrums in it and just grab one. The .73mm does feel better on acoustic though
Depending on what style im playing ive always switched between different picks.

Hey, do you use this shape or the TIII (sharp point) ones?
Personaly, I use .88 TIII pick for rhyhtms.

I'll leave it there
I use Gravity Sunrise Big Mini 2mm. In fact, there are songs I literally cannot play without it.
I wasn't using headphones still I could hear that thicker pick had more more weight to the tone, the differences are quite noticeable, now I wonder how much the material impacts the tone
The thicker the more percussion
I use a Brass Fountain Shiv plectrum. I believe it's a 1.5mm plectrum.
Yes pick thickness matters! Idk about tone but it affects how I play. I use jazz III 1.5mm picks.
.6 and .88 and purple for me. All for different uses. I’m not a tortex guy tho, I think their material hasn’t impressed me after trying like a big variety of other picks.
1.14 is my poison.
Sharpness makes a big difference in thicker pics.
1 and 1.5 triangle tortex is the shit
JAZZ III XL RED the best !
I wonder if it is actually the thickness or maybe the stiffness that changes the tone
Probably stiffness. A stiffer pick is going to waste less energy bending back from impacting the string and then back into place, making it so that more energy is transfered to the string, which should have a similar effect to just picking harder with a less stiff pick.
1.14>>>>>
0.88 for me 😊
I like my picks like I like my women…
Awesome
Weirdly, I prefer really thin or really thick picks. I never liked pics from 0.88 to 1.14. I really like the 2.0 and .60.
🥱 obviously🥱
Then don’t watch?
