Iluv your vids
I didnt even know you are from Virginia! that's awesome.
Yup
This. I love horsepower, but it's legitimately impossible to use it anywhere here.
Gotta agree I live in Virginia Beach and there’s not a lot of car events
I've lived in Virginia for 44 years. I was ticketed for 10 miles over the limit after they LOWERED the speed limit from 45 to 35, temporarily, on a ¼ mile section of road. There was not any construction, nothing. It was simply lowered. The limit was then raised back to 45 before my scheduled court date even arrived. I was still prosecuted to the full fine! From the ages of 17 - 19, I would be pulled over “randomly” and my car would be searched for drugs and weapons. This would happen about once every two months. One time the cops, being frustrated not finding anything illegal, seized my stereo, amps, and speakers claiming they were stolen. I had to go to court with the receipts and a lawyer to get them returned. Finally, I wound up keeping a list of dates I’d be pulled over and would hand it to the officers along with the registration. The officers would ask what the list of dates was and when I told them they stopped asking to search the car and started saying, “drive safely and have a nice day”. I’ve never had a Virginia Police Officer help me. I’ve only encountered negative interactions with them. Topping it all off, “to serve and protect” is no longer on the graphics of police cars in my little slice of Virginia.
Va suck ass to drive in. I' have only had one """"decent"""" interaction with a cop. this place sucks.

I remember reading about a city in Texas that had a dead person signing the “verified” red light camera tickets, the system was automated with a rubber stamped signature. It was only discovered when another policeman, that knew the deceased, received a ticket signed by his dead friend. They were also caught having shorter timings on red lights with cameras than ones without, resulting in more tickets, but they weren’t the only ones caught doing it. This is why people have trust issues.
Damn that's crooked.
My city set up red light cameras a few years ago. Turns out nobody paid them, so the city lost millions and wound up just taking them down. The private company that rented the cameras was gonna make most of the profit anyways. Fuckin crooks
I heard some would also randomly alter the yellow light time, so perhaps 1 in 10 times it would be abnormally short, so you would drive through expecting it to stay yellow, but it would change red.
What’s even more disturbing is the red light camera companies can’t enforce suspending a license and also can’t issue warrants for unpaid tickets. So many people pay the fines thinking they have to.
One of my buddies received 8 tickets from cameras and refused to pay them after he learned from the ticket givers themselves that they couldn’t enforce him to pay them.
Actually, the constant nagging and stealing by police in the US is a major reason why I moved to Mexico.

Time for you to post this on reddit!
They didn't mention the 81+ MPH reckless law. If you're going 81 even in a 70 in Virginia, you automatically get a reckless. Personal experience.
This state is an absolute driving hell hole.
That's why to just tell the cop to fuck off if you're from out of state and just dont pay the ticket, nothing they can do if you never show back up in Virginia
In PA, any speeding of 20 or more over gets your car impounded and you get a ride to jail plus a hefty fine and suspension. Which is hilarious because if you do anything less then 20 over on the Turnpike, you’re getting run over.
And if you get a reckless driving ticket you can’t get a CDL, and if you have a CDL it’s gone.
Its actually if you're doing 80 MPH on the dot. Not 81+
As soon as we saw the video title, all of us driving enthusiasts said, "Virginia".

That's one you usually DON'T have to worry about. If you take it to court, they have to have both the officer in the aircraft and the officer on the ground testify in court. It's am empty threat.
They have those signs in every state. Don’t act like its just Virginia
We got em in Maryland too. Always made me laugh.
You forgot the second part of that Reckless Driving law: 80 is automatically reckless driving. So, if the speed limit on a section of highway is 70 and you are doing 10 over and get pulled over, you get that reckless driving also.
bbmikej agreed. I travel on 66 and 81 to go between DC and college and being limited to 80 is t h e w o r s t. Not to mention the speed limit drops to 65 or even 60 around some towns.
Exactly! On the longer 2-lane highways what happens is you end up with people being unable to pass tractor trailers and then traffic bunches up, visibility is reduced and it all goes to shit.
At least Maryland has 85 for reckless driving
I'll pray for you ok.
Makes me feel luckier being in NY. We have low speed limits compared to the rest of the country, but at the same time traffic doesn't care and routinely does 75-80 anyways lol

As a Virginian, and a young driver, no only does it help the politicians, but getting a suspended license also is a gold mine for insurance companies. Getting a suspended license makes you "a liability" and as we all know, being a liability makes your insurance rates go through the roof 🙏
I wouldn’t have even thought of that.
Who would have known that driving very fast? Failing to signal and running stop signs would increase your risk of damageing your vehicle? And would statistically increase the likelihood of a insurance company having to pay claim? Wierd....
Come on man. I'm not judging you. I myself am not a law biding driver all the time. But if I get my license suspended from a traffic violation. I can't reasonably blame the insurance company. I would be mad about yeah. But it wasn't their fault.
@@mikefranklin70 @Mike Franklin Who would have known that a comment riddled with spelling and punctuation errors and pretends not to be condescending would be just that and miss the point entirely. Do you suggest that laws written by politicians would make you a bad driver and should justly increase your cost of insurance? Come on man. I'm not judging you. But think about it using the information presented to you.

Son, these penalties and laws in most cases are based on studies, evidence and court histories. I understand you may not like them. You simply don't have a basic understanding of economics. Insurance is a risk management business. Kinda akin to gambling. And just like Vegas, these odds are gone over with a fine tooth comb. To make sure at the end of the day. The company makes money and pays it's employees. While remaining competitive, to get new business.
Don't like it? You are free to move or change companies. Start your own insurance company. Or petition the government for change. But no you want to just whine about how unfair everything is. And how it isn't your fault.
How was that? Was the condescension apparent enough for you? It was intentional, because you aren't as smart as you think you are.
My work is done here. Enjoy!
@@mikefranklin70 Frankly that is the plain old cold equations shit. Let's face it insurance companies don't give a shit about you they do care what you will cost them on average and will charge you a premium on top of that. I live in VA and this is pretty accurate. The one thing you didn't mention, though, is the insane amount of state troopers we have just for "traffic enforcement". I like to call them road pirates.
Depending on the county/city the local cops can be pretty bad too. I once had a county cop pull me over because he said I wasn't wearing my seat belt, when there was no way he could have seen whether I was wearing it or not. And I was actually wearing my seat belt while I was driving, but when I stopped my car I had to unbuckle to get my registration out of the glove compartment because my seatbelt would lock up even when I wasn't breaking hard. So I know for a fact he pulled me for no reason, and I called him out on his bullshit. Then he gave me a ticket for having an air freshener hanging from my mirror instead, which is apparently illegal in VA.

My wife once got a speeding ticket while visiting family in VA for doing 70 in a 50. We are from NJ so she needed to return to VA several months later to appear in court. A few things we found out about ticketing in VA. #1. Do not go more than 19 MPH above the speed limit, because anything 20 MPH or more, and your moving violation turns into a MISDEMEANOR. You read that right. A misdemeanor. So it becomes a criminal offense, punishable up to 12 months in jail, with fines. #2. The police TARGET out of state plates, especially ones from NY and NJ. #3. Even if you're polite to the police officer, unless you are bleeding and/or currently in cardiac arrest, you WILL receive a ticket if you are stopped. Not worth a conversation or argument. Just hand over your documentation and wait for your summons. Moral of the story? Avoid VA.

My story: active duty stationed in Virginia most of my career (other than deployments overseas). One time, I received a wreckless driving by speeding ticket on a highway exit ramp. The cop wrote the ticket as though the speed limit was the ramp suggested speed - not the actual speed limit. By the actual speed limit, I was doing 2 mph over. Yeah, two - and written a wreckless driving. I was so infuriated that I did hire an attorney (and shelled out almost 3k for it) to fight it even citing Virginia's own driving code as well as the DMV manuals. The cop didn't have a leg to stand on and it was quickly apparent that he wrote a ticket for something that wasn't even illegal. So, what did the judge do about it? He dropped it from a wreckless to an improper driving. Yeah. lol. You can't make this shit up. The judge, literally, saw that I was barely speeding according to state law - and still pushed the issue as far as he could (cause he knew that he let the wreckless go, I'd have make a big scene out of it to whoever would pay me enough attention. That includes the media if they would have.) I had my entire military chain-of-command in the back of the courtroom, by the way. The ticket was finally dismissed, however, after the judge asked for my driving record. I had already pulled my own out-of-state record and had it certified and mailed to me, previously, so I handed it over. It was impressive. Clean as a whistle - though, I had been driving since I was 15. Not withstanding this, the officer shows the judge "my" driving record that he had pulled - which contrasted, drastically, to my own certified copy. What gives? Well, the cop pulled the wrong record. He pulled the record of someone with my same last name but a different first name (I actually knew the guy from high school, ironically) and his record had TONS of infractions. So, was the officer just incredibly inept as his job or was he intentionally trying to manipulate the system to receive a harsher punishment for me? Who knows. Honestly, who cares. Either way, he deserves to be fired, in my opinion. Certainly, you can't trust him to do what he's paid to do, regardless. He still works there to my knowledge, though, and so does the corrupt judge. Newport News, Virginia, you are garbage. Yep...
As a former VA police officer I can confirm all of this lol. There’s a reason I’m no longer working in that state.

There was one time I made a troll park that made over $1 million/week. As a former VA driver, I can confirm. There's an other little town on 95 called Emporia ( a main pass through when heading South to FL, GA, and the Carolinas) that it probably the best known by VA drivers for speed traps. 4:39 There's studies that show that more speed traps/too many traffic cops can actually cause MORE accidents, ironically enough, from people getting distracted by seeing speed traps/cops, slamming on their brakes, and disrupting the normal flow of traffic, potentially causing people to rear end each other, or unaware driver's swerving around those slowing down thinking it's just a slow driver, potentially hitting someone else, etc. So yea, it's JUST about money. The "safety" thing is mostly just a hollow excuse.
Ooooo, send me the link to the studies. I'd actually love to read that.
It's always about money dude, money and control. I drive a dump truck in NYC, you gotta see the scams here. NYC contracts out work to pave their streets, so they know exactly how much every truck costs and how many trucks they will have on a particular job, and based on those numbers they know damn well that in order for the contractor to make any money and not lose a fuck ton, they know every single truck will have to be "overloaded". In fact, in NY legally we would only be allowed to carry half of what we typically do. Then they setup truck checkpoints and check our weight and write outrageous fines. Thousands of dollars each. I don't own nor have I ever owned one of the trucks myself so I don't see the actual fine, but I've heard it comes out to about a dollar per pound over the limit. And you can EASILY BE 15000-20000LBS over. So then the contractor has to go to court and the courts maybe cut the fine in half or so to make you feel like you aren't being fucked in the ass dry.
@screaming chivo I know man, I know. I grew up here but I'm sick of this communist bullshit. Took me almost 3 years to get a pistol license, had to get a lawyer and everything and that's with no felonies, no misdemeanor convictions, no violent record whatsoever. I would've left already but me and my wife split and my daughter is here, plus I'm 5 years into my Union, don't want to have to start that all over.
Let's be honest, those studies are highly biased.
In general, IF people were driving the speed limit, roads would most definitely be safer.
But to ensure that people do drive the speed limit you'd need to install average speed cameras instead of cops looking out for speeders at a single point.

Yes!
You're right.
Driving education can increase safety more than having a speed limit, BUT only given the right rules (such as overtaking from the right being illegal, you are *only* allowed to overtake cars on the right of you on the Autobahn).
Also keep in mind a driver's license costs roughly 2000$ or more here in Germany and that money is going into proper education and enough driving training with a professional certified instructor at your side and far from easy theoretical and practical driving tests.
The reason why it's such a safe state to drive and it's because nobody's got a driver's license they don't want to crash into each other 🤣

You joke, but I think that's probably the case. I refuse to believe that slowing drivers from an instant kill speed to a slower instant kill speed improves safety on the highway. That or the differences between states are just too negligible, since I notice none of the raw numbers were given to us. Regardless, I'd like to see fatalities per accident, since speed doesn't actually cause any accidents. It just makes an accident that would've happened worse
And this is why I left Virginia...🥴

I'm 15 I have a few more years until I can leave
I currently live in Norfolk, Virginia, and avoiding speed traps is kind of an artform. I like to go fast and I always know where speed traps usually are. Thankfully, I've never been pulled over. The 55 mph restriction is abysmally slow, especially when my morning commute is already 30+ minutes. Generally, where I am, cops don't really care if you go 5 to 10 mph over. But not a day goes by where I don't see someone on the shoulder with a cop behind them. Truly is a shit state for drivers
I love that someone is finally calling this out. I caught one of these "reckless driving" tickets and landed myself 4 days in jail for it, lost my license for 6 months, and had massive fines since that part of the highway was dedicated as a "highway safety corridor". Gotta love Virginia

If people would just pay attention to the signs then nobody would hate Virginia just because they are painfully oblivious
Just moved from CA to VA. Speed traps are significantly more prevalent here! And we frequently say to each other "why is this speed limit so low for this road?!" Also, it makes locals drive faster because they feel "they know the roads" AND likely won't be pulled over with VA Plates - so it causes unsafe road conditions.
We have a local road that kills about 2 people each over about 10 miles. They lowered the speed limit to 50 but folks often speed and kill themselves.
Me: Goes 10 over the limit in Virginia.
Police: So you have chosen... death.
psh, yeah cause people are passing you going 20 over.
Well if you go over 80mph it's reckless driving so if the speed limit is 70 mph (which some are) all you have to do is 10 over
Avrage Gamers growing up in Maryland and traveling through Virginia often I have learned to only drive the speed limit. You not about to catch me driving 3 hours to go to court.
Uhh real talk. I got 75 in 55 got reckless. Fought it in court spent almost 900 for everything. And then got ticket week after court was done for 70 in 55. 5 yr clean driving all wiped clean.

weakxkiller va actually has better roads then most (coming from someone who travels the country a lot )
Actually compared to most states Virginia's roads are pretty good. Virginia is ranked #4 for best overall driving conditions and this is despite also being number one in the country for the worst traffic along 95 south from Fairfax county PKWY to Fredericksburg. Virginia also ranks as the second least dependent on federal funding overall to include road and other programs meaning it is second only to North Dakota for being the most self sufficient state in the country. North Dakota only has a population of 760k where VA pop is 8.5m. Sure the laws here suck on just about everything car related but I have been to worse parts of the country when it comes to the roadways.

Georgia has several state statutes that help reduce or prevent "speed traps." Laws like the vehicle being used (police car) to detect speed must be visible from 500 feet (doesn't apply to Georgia State Patrol), and police can't use speed detection within a certain distance of a change in speed limit e.g., you get a short grace distance when the speed limit changes before police can use radar or lidar to detect your speed.
But all Georgia cops parents are brother and sister
And all the police in your area are regularly serviced by you

As someone who’s lived in Virginia all my life, I thought 20 over being reckless was universal. I guess it’s time for a road trip
In my country it depends on where you do the speeding. But 20 mph over, or 30kph as we'd say, can in fact be a reason to suspend your license on the spot for a minimum of 10 days. Though to get to that point, you would have to be within city limits, and it has to be either in a 30kph-zone, a school zone, or a special 'residential area zone'. And even then the only reason why it can happen is that the speed limit in those zones are 30kph or below and doubling the speed limit is an automatic reckless driving charge.
Otherwise within city limits, in a 50kph zone, if you do 30 over the limit, it's not a simple transaction fine. As in pay the fine and it's done, no lasting impact or anything at all. If you do 30 over the limit within city limits, it goes on your record for the next 18 years and for the next 2 years it means that other fines for doing 30 over are automatically doubled.
The exception to this is the motorway, where the speed limit is 100 or over. There you get to do 40 over before you have to show up in court. But with the national speed limit being 130kph, that leaves plenty of leeway. Well it would if it weren't for near omnipresent average speed camera systems.
Then again fuel here costs more than thrice what it costs in the US, and my insurance gives me a significant discount if I drive around with a GPS dongle in the car. So I just pootle around behind lorries, never going faster than 80 kph and as a reward I get full comprehensive insurance with 0 deductible for 17 euro a month.
I got pulled over in ny (I live here) I was doing 29 over. I got a speeding ticket, had to pay $350ish and four points on my license
My brother got a ticket for driving 75 on a 55
They don’t even enforce the speed limit at all in California. Los Angeles is like the Autobahn or Wild West on the Highways, but they will definitely get you on the parking tickets. East Coast is way more strict in my experience
Reckless means different things in different countries. In finland if you do over 20kmh over the speedlimit, you could lose your license for a time and get a fine. Also you could get off with a fine but it depends on the circumstances you were caught in. The amount of the fine and the time you have your license revoked depends on things such as the time of day, weather conditions, your driving style, did you admit to the crime on the spot or not, did you try to run or not, were there other cars on the road with you, did you pass any cars, if there were other people in the car with you etc. But atleast we also have roadsigns telling us which intersections and parts of the road have speeding supervision or not, cameras for example. And they warn us good time before it happens too
I avoid driving through Virginia like the plague. It’s also one of the few states where radar detectors are illegal...

Also, there is this speed trap spot near where I live where police sit at the bottom of a huge incline waiting for drivers to reach the bottom while accidentally going over the speed limit 🙄
I remember in high school almost every week someone would receive a reckless driving ticket. I’ve gotten 2 before I was 18. The most notorious culprit of this is the fact that you can take some classes only offered in one high school or tech school in my county and you’re given the option to travel between schools for those classes. But there’s never enough time unless you speed.
I’m from Virginia. I got pulled over doing 21 over in a 45. Cop gave me a break and only gave me a ticket for speeding. I showed up to court and the judge said I was very polite to both him and the cop, and that I otherwise had a spotless record. He reduced the charge to improper equipment, which is not a moving violation so my insurance didn’t go up.

PRO TIP: If you get caught driving on a suspended, tell the officer you DID NOT KNOW it was suspended. If you start apologizing and tell them you know it's suspended, you get a worse ticket and they will arrest you on the spot without question.
I was told when driving to Florida, go around VA because they’re bs there.
In Colorado I got caught in a speed trap and the officer originally put me down as reckless driving and a ticket that would have been a felony charge in the state. Luckily, through some politeness and honesty with the city attorney, I got it reduced to a simple ticket that just had me pay a fine.
Lived in southwest VA my whole life, nearly every town the speed goes from 55 straight to 35. But not only do they have speed traps everywhere, they're really strict of car mods. Like tinted windows, clearance, etc they will find any excuse to pull over whomever they want to.
Also they give reckless to anyone going 15 over. I got slapped with that when I was 18 doing 53 in the 35.
That’s crazy I did a 53 in a 35 and I got sent to a driving improvement class
yeah i hate those unincorporated towns where cops lurk at the speed change
bro, cop said i was going 20 mph over, said he got me on radar as we was driving opposite side of bridge, then said all the cars that were behind me wernt behind me by the time he caught up. sad part was is that when he hit the sirens till the time i stopped i was going 5 to 10 over. i stopped right infront of a new speed limit sign that dropped down 10 mph, so he wrote 20 over, i should have took it to court, but thought id get in trouble with the navy for having speedticket, but what do they care lol, this was VB Virginia.
I heard of people getting tickets for modified exhaust on rental cars in Virginia?
Back in August 2019, my son, wife and I went to Virginia Beach Virginia to see my nephew get married. Along the way, I must have gotten on to a toll road there that had no boof to pay a toll. Some weeks later, I supposedly got a bill for $1.75 for the toll. I never received the letter because my wife opened it and paid the money. Unfortunately, she didn't pay it on time and they tacked on late fees and it was sent to collection. Fast forward January 30th 2020, I receive a letter saying I owe them $75 for unpaid tolls. I called them and they say it's because this toll has been sent to collections. I asked them how can you charge me for a toll on a road when you don't have a toll booth. They said it was not their problem and that they would withhold my registration on my car if I don't pay the $75. What kind of BS is that???SMDH😬😬😬
So true, the tollway companies here are massive pricks. Bullies backed by the politicians in office.
Yep. Keep selling public roads to private corporations... I'd hate to make this political, but everyone hates toll roads, how can anyone think privatization improves services?
I live in northern virginia and the speed limits are almost always 55 but everybody goes 70 anyways cause they cant catch us all
It's the same like all zebras are peacefully grazing when the lions eat one of them right beside.
@@bowhunter7485 😂
That's why if you speed with others in a pack, don't be the first or last car in that group 😉😉
@@GabrielIgnacio pack attack on the cops if they get one, leave no one behind, im just imagining 100 cars just chasing a cop car
@@aarepelaa1142 lol. we shouldn't be chasing them this time.
Probably the reason it's so safe is that 1 in 6 drivers are paranoid as hell they're gonna get arrested if they get stopped for so much as a missed signal.
