For those who need this. I think our man Justin Bohn needs a huge thank you. For those who’ve been at it and been launching their balls, stay with it and stay determined!

I think he explained the rule of 31 so well. He even explained how rev dominant or speed dominant can change your breakpoint compared to others as well. Great video JB

When I used to play, I was a Kevin McCune like player and loved, I mean LOVED short patterns launching it at 17 to 19mph. High game for me was 257 on a 36 footer. Might make a comeback someday and go for 300.

You know what kind of bowling tip videos I would like? Stuff that is less conceptual and more descriptive. For example, what your body should feel like when you follow tips. Yes concepts are handy to know but when not taught well they are very hard apply.

Thanks for the vid, Justin, but a few questions and comments, please:
    1. You mention that, depending upon whether the bowler is low versus high speed or low references high rev, they may have to tweak the rule of 31. However, what is a bowler is both low rev and low speed? For example, I'll throw the ball around 15 miles an hour, but my rev rate is only about 220. in my situation, how then would I tweak the rule of 31?
    2. I've noticed that people tend to play short oil patterns in two different ways: either they stand already close to the gutter, and they pipe the ball parallel to the gutter, so it starts as close to the gutter as it needs to be at the break point, or they do what you seem to do with this video stand a little further left--not a lot--and throw the ball out to the gutter down lane where you want the ball to start hooking. Could you please speak to both methods and why you would recommended one versus the other if you do?
    3. to the point of my second question, you spoke a great deal about how to read the lane graph for short oil that was very helpful. Thank you, you spoke a great deal about ball choice also very helpful however, you didn't speak a lot about how to actually execute a shot that has to come close to the gutter very close to the gutter.
    4. since many people might be afraid of the gutter and also, it's not a shot, you typically play in league even if you are a lefty, do you have any suggestions or drills to practice learning how to throw the ball close to the gutter or even at the gutter?
    5. It's very clear and thank you. That urethane would be the bowl of choice to start with on a short oil pattern. However, we've heard endlessly about how urethane carries oil down the lane and since we are trying to get the ball to the gutter, all the way down the lane urethane could potentially lengthen the break point area. Could you speak to how to combat that? After rule, urethane on fresh oil might be the go to ball, but what do you do once this carry down from that urethane? How do you combat it?
    6. Last, You mentioned that the purple hammer is a solid cover stock it's actually a Pearl although it looks like a solid. In your opinion, does it matter if the bowler uses a pearl urethane on short oil versus a solid urethane on short oil? And later when there's been carry down, does it matter what type of urethane the bowl or uses?
Thank you so much for your time and your advice. Keep doing what you're doing.

Wait, so when bowling on a shorter pattern, using a urethane & a pearl generally works better? And then, when you bowl on a longer pattern, the solid works better? Is that generally correct? 🤔

I don’t understand if it’s short oil how come the solid and throwing at far right would work ? Isn’t it going to hook early from lack of oil ? Someone please explain this to me

    • @Regular-Sized
      @Regular-Sized 5 дней назад

Yes, but that’s actually the goal in this case.
I’m not a ball physics expert, but I’ll try my best to explain:
It’s important to remember that the hook of a bowling shot is a phase, not a single moment. The start and duration of that hook phase will vary greatly depending on the lane conditions, ball, shot speed and release.
The aggressive hook that bowlers struggle with when bowling on short, heavy-oil patterns like this is the result of the balls going from very low friction to very high friction relatively quickly, which gives the ball less opportunity to bleed off its rotational (hook) energy than a longer/lighter oil pattern would.
Imagine you’re driving in a rainstorm with bald/slick tires. If you drive too fast over a big puddle, the car will hydroplane (skid) over it and then jerk violently as soon as the tires touch the road surface again. To counteract the risk/effect of hydroplaning, proper road tires have grooves to force water out of the way so that the tire can maintain contact with the road surface.
In this metaphor, the bald/slick tires are like shiny pearl bowling balls, while the treaded tires are like solid/low-grit balls.
A solid/low-grit ball thrown into the (relatively) high-friction edges of the oil pattern closer to the foul line will start to use up some of its rotational energy sooner than if the ball was thrown over the heavy oil in the middle of the lane. This starts the hook phase of the shot sooner BUT also blends out the overall reaction of the ball over the full length of the lane because, by the time the ball reaches the end of the oil pattern (36 ft, in this case), it has less stored rotational energy to unleash.
Even though we all love the shock of a violently-hooking shot, a hugely important skill to learn in bowling is blending ball reaction over the full length of the lane, as it helps achieve more predictable, repeatable shots.

The ONLY reason I use Urethane is because it wont chip all up around the thumb & finger holes. I have sacked 5 of my polyesters in on a dozen marathon bowling days do to them chipping up so BAD they hit that outside chipped part & dart to the left or to the right when I throw it STRAIGHT down the lane!!! that made me bowl a 143 game on LEAGUE!! last Friday!! I had a 178 avg before that! I bowled just under a 500 series last Friday after I bowled 50 straight games for about 5 hours
