    I tried taking Great Lakes collagen and started feeling depressed. I stopped taking it and immediately felt like myself again. I was vegetarian at the time. I think tryptophan should be added to the collagen powders and that could possibly sort it out and stop the negative effects that some people experience, like I did.

      @@adrianexo21 Hi. I didn’t add tryptophan myself, rather I stopped taking the collagen completely. So, now I have been vegan for a year and take a liquid silica instead. There is no actual vegan or vegetarian source of collagen so I would not be taking it even if it hadn’t caused me to feel depressed.

    Have schizoaffective disorder and are very stable by using my medication, but after 4 ot 5 days of using a collagen supplement I was feeling abnormally and continuously depressed. Eating plenty proteins and still had a very prominent and unfortunate affect. This collagen-induced depression is almost surely because of the presence of glycine and/or glutamic acid in collagen rather than the absence of tryptophan in it.

      @@metaorange302 You're not starving your "happiness" neurotransmitter site if you eat a normal diet with enough protein and just add collagen on top of it. That "starving" only occurs if your protein intake consists primarily of collagen.

    I am glad you made this video to clear this up about collagen. The only thing I would say also is theat too many carbs with your protein may spike insulin which may actually inhibit tryptophan from crossing the blood brain barrier. Such as quickly overeating turkey (which is high tryptophan) along with high amounts of carbs.

    • @LtdMusic
      @LtdMusic 3 года назад +4

      Isn't it the other way around? Spiking insulin helps tryptophan into the brain by eliminating competition from other aminoacids. So spiking insulin with carbs and no protein in the evening after eating more protein in hte morning for example will increase tryptophaneabsorption. So it's more the combining of protein with the carbs that is the problem, not the carbs. Carbs by themself promotes tryptophaneabsorption from the bloodstream to te brain. This is what i have read. Thoughts? :)

    When you mentioned that about glycine slowing respiration and producing an anxiety effect...wow I once had a panic attack around age 12 because I when I was trying to fall asleep it felt like I would stop breathing (not sleep apnea) and this sensation continued even when I was awake. And I hyperventilated as a response to that and ended up going to the ER where they said nothing was wrong with me and I'm a fat kid who should run around the block more haha.

    I started adding a tablespoon of collagen to my morning berry smoothie and after a week I noticed I was edgy but didn’t make the association. I then started adding gelatine to my afternoon green smoothie and within a week had extreme anxiety. Still didn’t make the connection until I accidentally came across a Trudy Scott post and couldn’t believe it..... Collagen will mess up your mind by making you dull and sleepy, but only if you take the recommended dose, which is too high.
    One of the most prominent side effects is causing your blood to become more viscus(probably due to hydroxyproline).
    When I take too much collagen, I start to experience circulation problems, like arms going numb during the sleep.
    Collagen is important to take, and the correct dose (for me) is 1 heaped TEASPOON once daily in my night protein shake. In my day protein shake I take 1 gram of l-proline, which is also very good for collagen and does not cause circulation issues.

      From Ray Peat's article on Gelatin:
      Both tryptophan and cysteine inhibit thyroid function and mitochondrial energy production, and have other effects that decrease the ability to withstand stress. Tryptophan is the precursor to serotonin, which causes inflammation, immunodepression, and generally the same changes seen in aging. Histidine is another amino acid precursor to a mediator of inflammation, histamine; would the restriction of histidine in the diet have a longevity promoting effect, too?

    Interesting view about serotonin, I would love to read a blog post/podcast about your view about serotonin, as it seems very different and more enlightened than most of what is written about this. I'm quite sure that keeping serotonin low has given my mental and physical health an enormous boost. Are you aware of serotonin's role in hybernation? In that sense, it seems to be a coping mechanism for stress indeed, in this case the stress of too little calories available. But in the end, the coping of serotonin always involves lowering the metabolic rate, and in the long term, this can never be a viable approach to any health problem. It is a really the hormone of the "avoidance" personality, which may help in the short term, but in the long term, with high serotonin, no real progress can be made. If you want to resolve any of your trauma's, and step into reality, low serotonin will probably help you more than anything else.

      Nope. Glycine INCREASES serotonin, that's why it makes people feel more depressed and suicidal. High serotonin can actually cause suicidal thoughts, and low serotonin is better for your brain

    • @MrKingjoe28
      @MrKingjoe28 4 года назад +3

      I mostly agree for reasons i believe are obvious. Heres a few...
      Most people are low dopamine.
      Aka low drive. Low testosterone and low dopamine tend to go hand in hand and the symptoms of low T in males sounds a lot like low dopamine not low serotonin.
      Also note the horrible side effects of serotonin drugs.
      Many people i know say the same things. Makes them want to sit around eating sweets and watch tv or like me takes all emotions away.
      Ray talks about setotonin being elevated in hypothyroidism and cancer. So how does raising it help anyone?
