The white in the trailer harness is the ground wire. The ball is never to be used as a ground. I worked as a tech at a RV dealer for 17yrs, and as a master certified tech the ground is a direct wire connection from the truck wiring to the trailer wiring harness. Check the plugs on the truck and trailer for a bad rotted wire at the connection inside the plugs.
That's what I came to say. You have a painted receiver, painted hitch and you're trying to achieve a ground through a sliding painted connection? It will somewhat work. But it's not reliable and a very weak connection. I just dealt with this on a friends travel trailer.
Two things Nathan. 1) The white wire is your ground for the trailer. Chase that down and find out why it's not connected. 2) Put a little 'dielectric grease' on that ball. It allows electrical ground and won't let the ball rust. But seriously the ball should NOT be the ground link between the truck and the trailer.

Many years ago my Dad added a ground strap to our travel trailer to ensure there wasn't an intermittent ground and it ensured the lights and brakes always worked, it was a simple thing, braided wire to a spring clamp.
Having been in and around heavy trailers pretty much all my life I strongly suggest that you grease your hitch ball. I've worn out a few tongues running them dry. Plus it just makes them turn easier.
Your trailer lights should have a ground wire in the plugin. That way, when you plug things in, they are grounded to your truck through the plugin. This will fix your rusty ball problem.

It could if it were intentionally wired up to be. But that would be a very bad thing to do. Most balls, hitches, linkages, etc. will be connected directly to the frame, so it should be grounded. But you definitely shouldn't depend on that to complete your electrical circuit.
The contact area required to complete a 12vdc circuit is minimal. Even with the (minor to minimal) surface rust present, there is something else wrong in the wiring harness. Granted we have 60% of the needed info.
Ground wire is in the connector. Looking at the truck female, it is the wire bottom left [7 o'clock] . White wire. Most likely there is dirt on the male side [trailer plug] . Clean up with light sandpaper and a dab of dielectric grease.

A good way to avoid the “Rusty Ball” problem is to have a plug ground going to the trailer from the truck. This avoids the problem. I did a lot of boat trailer towing in my day. FYI
I have some english walnut logs I would love to have cut down. Too bad I am in Utah and the tree service my sister used cut the logs to three foot lengths.

I lived in Illinois for ten years, down state. We had black walnut everywhere. I am crazy about the nuts too, but they are dern hard to crack! A friend twelve miles south of me had an old barn that he sold to a woodworker, the whole barn was made from walnut!! He sold it for $25k and that was fifty years ago!!
keep that rain,,we had rain for 3 weeks strait..and never rely on a ball ground....theres a Ground that runs in the harness and make dam sure its grounded to the trailer good,,not over paint..you no your brakes work with that ground,,,for that size trailer its a must..nice size logs there,,,Gold id say..dont stand in the rain,,,,its fun right..haaa be careful man..
Looks like your friend Butch has a system of keeping track of his logs (some kind of numbering system). You might want to adopt that kind of idea, as you'd be able to utilize your inventory wiser.

Cato to pick up log, back away from trailer a little bit, park log about chest height, then apply the white stuff(forgot name). you wouldn't even have to pick ur hands above shoulders?! just saying
you need to ground your plug to your frame of the truck before it goes thru your plug. if you only use the ground on the ball, driving down the road as the trailer bounces, your lights will flicker as it come in contact with the ball. honestly grounding every light to the frame of the trailer is the best option.
The power for the lights comes from the truck which means the ground for the lights also has to come from the truck. Grounding the trailer lights to the trailer frame does nothing if there is no ground from the lights to the truck. Wire the lights into the ground in the wire harness so there’s not an issue getting a good ground between the truck and trailer.

May want to check the 7 way trailer junction box, check the white wire grounding lug it can get corroded to not provide good grounding it may be grounding at the moment thru the trailer but it isn't the proper ground. Electric should feed through the cable not on a rusty ball that will constantly do that. Might check if you have a spare hole not used. Or a ground on one side and not the other. Good luck -
You should not rely on the tow ball connection for the earth. Where I am, the standard for all the trailers have a good earth through the trailer connector.

We have something similar here. I have been cutting timber in a number of woodlots in Greene County Ohio for years. Walnut, oaks, hickory, you name it, but not a single poplar. Not one to be found. And yet if you plant one it will flourish. Go figure. Can't understand why they are not established in the local woods.
40+ years ago, I set out to establish an inheritance fund for my grandchildren when I planted around 3 dozen black walnut trees on my property. Unfortunately, I had to sell the property a few years back, as the property taxes became outrageous. Sone of those trees had 20+ feet of clear lumber to the first branches. I sure hope the new owners appreciate the effort I put into those trees. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that the local village decided that they wanted to establish itself as a tree friendly village and passed an ordinance that residents could not cut down or remove trees from their property without a permit and forestry inspection. Local government overreach!
I'm almost finished with the kitchen table I made from a black walnut log. Just need to put the epoxy on the table top to be done but it's going to be beautiful. I think walnut is the prettiest wood the US has to offer
The new trailers with the 7 wire connector have a ground wire as part of the harness. If your trailer is depending on the ball for a ground there is another ground problem . Either the ground wire to the body of the truck or the trailer is compromised. Look further, do not ever depend on the ground through the ball.
After reading the comment below about the chicken house I have one. Chickens need a place in their coop consisting of dirt so they can take dirt baths, not just wood flakes covering all of the dirt. It keeps them free of mites.

My guess is that it will be closer to your timber frame, and might be constructed in a way that you could stage and/or store, your cuts in ample covered space behind the operator side of the sawmill.
Nathan, whoever told you that your trailer ground through the ball hitch.......is not your friend. As everyone else has commented, there is supposed to be a dedicated ground wire in your trailer cord connector. Using the ball as a ground will cause damage to the ball and the hitch due to the arcing that occurs. The ball should be lubed so it can pivot like it is designed to.
My dad suggested it. He is my best friend. And if you watch the video he was right. Thanks for watching Also a ground will only ark when there is an abnormal current flowing through it. Doesn’t happen often and the 30amp fuse going to the trailer plug would pop first.
Nathan, my remark about the person "not being your friend" was not a bitter remark, but none the less I apologize that it ended up being unintentionally aimed at your dad. But I guarantee you that the ball hitch is only accidentally providing a ground path because there is a problem somewhere in the wiring of your trailer cord or the wiring of your truck that is preventing the dedicated ground path from working as it is intended. Some arcing will occur every time you hit a bump if there are any active circuits at the time, even if it is only tail lights. A normal load will cause arcing but will never pop a fuse. I and many other commenters are just trying to set you right about this because it is a defective condition if the only ground your trailer has is through the ball hitch. I started working as a mechanic in 1968 and have done more than 50 years as a heavy truck/trailer mechanic and I speak from experience on the subject. Run a separate ground wire from both the trailer & truck, which you plug together when using so as not to worry about your rusty balls.
I actually wired a ground wire from my pickup to my trailer in the wiring so that I avoid that and I can run with grease on my ball.
Thought I was going to choke on my drink. Rusty balls. LOL

A additional step use axle grease on the ball it lubes the hitch plus adds a rust prevention layer

Walnut is one of my favorite woods to work with. It works good on all all my saws and shapes good too. Beautiful wood.

You can buy a rubber cap to put on the ball to prevent the problem or a light coat of lube grease
