    Congratulations on the 90 site campground exclusive rights! You got it by doing things the right way and nobody else can really touch that!! Just last year I began doing bundles to get the monthly income to cover my rent and insurance payments. Bulk sales for me was pretty limited from Sept. to Dec. I haven't really run comparison numbers, but for now I'm happy with having a mix between the two. Great video Phil and Karen!!

We like to show the good the bad and the ugly because it’s real life thing for us and there’s no point in sugar coating the truth . I truly enjoy working in the Woodyard and that’s why I don’t mind being there 7 days a week but I have been known to take off for a bit with a fish pole in hand lol. Totally upfront about it. I do it for exercise and I enjoy it. Finding getting wood being tuff this year. I don’t have things ready for my stand but in few weeks hope to be selling bundles. Being versatile really attracts differents customers which sets you apart from the competition. Then you add your lumber sales, your pretty much a one stop shop for anything wood. In my experience, people like dealing with one person for their firewood or lumber needs because of honesty and the product description. You guys put out a great product, you have a great personality, and your honest. If someone pays for a half cord or a cord, you give them what they pay for. About 5 years ago I had a guy ask me if I had many repeat customers when selling firewood. I told him most of my customers were repeat customers and referrals from repeat customers. He said he asked the same question to another firewood dealer in my area and the dealer said he didn't have hardly any repeat customers. Needless to say this guy has been a repeat customer for the last 5 years now. So I guess the moral of the story is keep doing what your doing with bundles and bulk because every customer is your number one customer and that can lead to repeat customers and referrals. Great video as always guys!

    Hello Phil and Karen. I’m getting tired just watching all the work you’ve done and all the work you still have ahead of you. Hopefully all this works out to full pockets. I think on the bundled wood where you pay out a percentage of the money to the person that lets you put the stand on their property you shouldn’t do a 3 for pricing. You should sell it all by the single bundle price to help cover the extra cost. In business a deal for the customer can be a big loss for the owner. Just the convenience of being able to grab a bundle of wood while driving someplace is a plus for the customer. You guys do the extra work, so you should be able to reap the benefits. Thanks for another good video.

    • @AllenFamilyFirewood
      @AllenFamilyFirewood  7 месяцев назад

      There’s a bundle stand on every corner around here and some for as low as $ 4 ea so it’s competitive. It works out to about $4 ea for us times 128 equals $512 pr cord and that’s just over double our cord price . Maybe as we go forward we can up the price so we will be able to keep up with the demand . This time of yr it’s 7 days a week and 10-12 hr days . 20 yrs ago id put in 16 hr days but I’m to old for that crazy stuff now .

    Love watching your videos. We are starting to cut back on the bundle production, bulk wood seems to be the way to go. We sell one of our road side stand. Half hard wood and half Softwood ( aspen,Pine,Basswood) We sell more bulk than bundles by far. It seems that bundles are labor intensive. The area we are in is a good spot right on the highway, lost is minimal for us in bulk. Wondering if we will have enough inventory for the summer. Hope to get to meet you at Bunyan 2024.

      Our bundle sales are the best for us, although this year bulk has really ramped up. We live in a high tourist area because of the lakes, and campers buy the bundles like crazy. We’re trying to stay ahead of the game and have both, but it can change and we don’t want to be stuck with me or the other, although we know we can always sell it next year if not this year. The season is just getting underway and our bundle sales are doing really well. Would love to meet you at the Bunyan show! Thanks Jason!

    What do you do with the slabs from the sawmill? You should cut it into firewood and bundle it for campgrounds. It would give you more other wood for bulk. You should also bundle the shorts and uglys fill a couple of bundle bags full of them. I have a feeling you would sell those as well at campgrounds. Give the people options. But it also gives you an opportunity to make money on your buy product and by selling your buy products you have more good wood to sell. It is a win-win. Just an idea. All you can do is try. I know if i was personally at a campground that offered beautiful pin bundles or off cut shorts hardwood. I would choose the hardwood every time. I would probably get a bundle of pine to get the fire going, but then hardwood offcuts for the rest of the night. Pine burns too quickly, and i like coals, but everyone is different. Great video, as always you to keep up the great work.

    • @AllenFamilyFirewood
      @AllenFamilyFirewood  7 месяцев назад

      We found that people don’t like slabs for some reason especially in the bundles we tested that last yr and every time the bought the split wood . I did try and bag some of the shorts but they don’t stack very well on a pallet for delivery so we are trying to sell them as bulk . I think next yr we will gear up and do hardwood bundles as people seem to like the hardwood just as much . For now we have been using a few slabs mixed in with the bulk orders or setting it aside for making kindling but some eventually gets hauled off to the mulch plant .

    Aside from everything else, you have to produce what your customers want, presuming you price it for the profit you need. The second thing, is your sources of wood, take everything they can give you. Third, Keep up. Assuming bundle wood is premium stuff, Phil and Buster are real good at splitting it. If you are well set for processing in the barn on rainy days, if you could store it under cover, well, wood doesn't go bad. I have a suggestion for you to consider. On my pallets, I have two sides and a back. So, I stack across the front which makes a temporary wall, I throw a stack against the back wall, and I fill in the middle any which way. I have no idea if that would work for you at all, but it is a choke point stacking on the pallets. Fix one choke point, you will find another anyhow.

    • @AllenFamilyFirewood
      @AllenFamilyFirewood  7 месяцев назад

      We try to produce what they want but we’re finding the bundle sales are leading to more bulk sales they buy a few bundles then order a load of bulk . I wish we had a huge place to store bagged wood inside . Your set up for stacking on pallets sounds like a good idea . I’d like to figure out a way to stack pallets on top of each other as well . Right now we only get the small loads of wood from the tree guys , there big jobs of 3 or more cord they pay a log truck to come haul it off because we can’t get it off the job fast enuf . I’d eventually like to have a log truck so we could get all there saw logs and firewood logs . They had a job today ware they pd to have $3000 worth of saw logs haled away and they have to pay 300 for every load . they also had another load of just pine firewood . Just gota keep selling woud till I can save up enuf to buy a small log truck .

    The difference between bulk and bundles depends totally on which way you can process faster. Bulk is faster but the bundles has a higher profit margin. I think it’s good to do some of each so that you don’t have all your eggs in one basket.

    • @AllenFamilyFirewood

    I'm curious how anyone would only split and sell bundle wood. Would you just hold out for absolutely perfect bundle grade firewood poles? Anyway, I guess the great thing about splitting for bundle wood is that it can always be sold as bulk firewood if necessary. The beauty of the vertical splitter is that you can sort (grade) your splits into different bins while you are splitting. That's what ultimately sold me on the Axis.

    • @AllenFamilyFirewood
      @AllenFamilyFirewood  7 месяцев назад

      That’s basically what we do. It can’t all be perfect bundle grade wood, you’re always going to get the less desirable splits. We sell those for bulk wood. The vertical splitter is definitely the way to go for bundle wood. That Axis is a great splitter!

    What a question. I helped my nephew get into the game three years ago. The bundles are a full time job all by themselves. I convinced him to but up his contact information at each stand and list the different ways to purchase his product. He has now turned the stands over to his son and is only doing bulk. They are going gang busters and can barely keep up. They both make a great argument for each way of selling. My nephew says there is to much time involved in bundles not to mention the theft and stand maintenance. But readily admits bundles built their business. My great nephew who is 17 by the way, says he only requires 2/3 the amount of wood for the same profit. They work together because neither has time to do both. I sold wood in the late 80’s through middle 90’s bundles were not a thing. But I did deliver to camp grounds. I worked it out for a twenty five percent higher price than full cord orders. Plus delivery. I heard you say you were about out of wood. Did you remember to take the stock out of the kiln project? Have a great day.

    • @AllenFamilyFirewood
      @AllenFamilyFirewood  7 месяцев назад +1

      We actually just ordered signs for each stand that says we deliver 1/4 cord 1/2 cord and full cord with our contact info but I’m not sure I dare put them out lol . We can barely keep up now so they might be for next yr . We are finding that bundles and bulk kinda go hand in hand. They buy a few bundles then decide to just order half a cord so it’s been keeping us more than busy trying to keep up with both .

    They all say because they have a higher price on their bundles. They always say that if you sell a quarter firewood by button, you make more money, but as you guys say you you do, but it's not as big as different from what you guys get in your area proprising, but I think you're always gonna be into a little bit of boat. Because you're gonna want those people that are at the can't run for a week.Set a time remote that I'm gonna buy the bulk.And then you're gonna have people that just show up for the weekends or they're gonna wait for the weekend and those people are gonna stop and buy the bags

    I just got a roadside stand up and running last Thursday. Just bundles as I'm thinking the folks going to the campgrounds past my location are in loaded down SUV's. At first I thought you meant bulk wood ( like in 20 dollar sections) as many do. The state campgrounds here would probably not let be bring in a load for sale as they sell wood at the park store.

    I dont separate "ugly wood" from "bundle grade", i bag it all together and my customers have nevee complained. As long as it burns, they're happy. The bags really shine as far as display goes, I could have a bunch of uglys in one bag and perfect splits in another bag, but next to each other in the stand they look identical, and burn the same. I think you'll find a lot of time savings not worrying about separating bundle grade from ugly

    • @AllenFamilyFirewood
      @AllenFamilyFirewood  7 месяцев назад

      That would definitely make life easier, but we find it's so much easier to make the bundles with wood that is consistent in size. We're making 100's upon 100's of bundles, so if the wood is twisted and crooked, it just doesn't bag well. We find it works best for us to separate the two so we know what we have for bundles and what we have for bulk deliveries. We have it all on pallets, so we also know by counting the pallets how many cord or how many bundles we have available. It definitely all burns the same though! Everyone has their own system, that's why this is such a great community. We can all share and learn from each other!
