Moenchengladbach Zoo: The last TARPAN in Odenkirchen | zoos.media

In Moenchengladbach Zoo, we visited the last tarpan living there. Director Dr. Katrin Ernst introduces us to the last representative of the wild horses in Odenkirchen.
Dario is the name of the magnificent gelding we meet in the video. The tarpans living today are a back-breeding of the original tarpan (Equus ferus ferus). In nature, they were eradicated in the 17th and 18th centuries. The species was widespread west of the Urals - especially in the southern Russian steppes.
However, it is unclear whether tarpans were ever real, original wild horses or feral domestic horses, which is why back-breeding comes close to them. It could also have been a mixed race. The appearance of the tarpans reconstructed today is based on genetic, osteological, and historical findings.
Tarpans have been hunted for meat since the Paleolithic Age. In addition, humans spread more and more and farmers also wanted to prevent domestic and wild horses from mixing. In the end, hunting and habitat loss led to the complete extinction of the tarpan. Telling this story in zoos is very important.
In Odenkirchen, the district in which the Moenchengladbach Zoo can be found, however, the keeping expires after no one wants the foals anymore because the keepers continue to decline. Therefore the zoo would have had to set up a herd in Moenchengladbach, but there is not enough space for this. So, Dario was laid and now lives with other horses - including Fanta.

Dario is happy in his new herd and enjoys the company of the other horses in his retirement home. The team at Moenchengladbach Zoo makes sure that they lack nothing. He is an important ambassador for the protection of wild horses in general.
