  • In this video Dr. Gillard presents (with permission) all pertinent clinical and MRI findings of a patient with severe foot drop, without any low back pain. You will certainly be surprised at what is found when Dr. Gillard goes over the MRI images, slice by slice. This is version 2 of the story which was edited because of new information learned.

I came down with "ACUTE" Drop Foot and what the VA here in Dallas id doing is,
    (EMG LE
--Diagnostic studies: MRI Brain and neck wo contrast)
It's all Greek to me, but they seem to think its a nerve someplace around L-4
My chiro and other Docs explained to me basically what you have said in this video,
Right now until the MRI and the Nerve study is done, (2 weeks from now) is PT with a towel
My best hope is this can all be fixed HOPEFULLY in Chiro and without any surgery..
AND, the info you put out in this video, helped ease my mind some as you and the Docs at the VA are basically saying the same.. :-P

I am 23 female with an identical foot drop and L4-L5 S1 disc herniation, and spondylitis lumbar spinal stenosis post fall out of bed. it is going on 2 month. Your video was so illuminating, because I feel very confused by all the doctors I have seen. I have had one Steroid epidural and in a wheelchair now. I also experience all my pain in my right leg and minor lower back pain, every doctor I have told looked shocked and said it’s not possible… they also mentioned severe arthritis. I have had pain for years but after the fall the foot drop has made it impossible to live normally (I don’t have minor bladder/ bowel issues where I do not know until I gotta go right then). I have had one MRI done so far, and referred to a neurosurgery place soon.
I saw your scale and I would rate myself an3 to 3- like this gentleman.
I wanted to share, and thank you because this is the only video I have found which has given me actual information I could follow and understand.

I'm sorry you're going through this :-( Remember, if the disc herniation is causing the foot drop, the sooner that herniation is removed, the better. Most surgeons I know like to get the pressure off within three or four months, so try not to let this drag on, in order to prevent permanent damage of the nerve. Good luck!

Hi from Australia, for years after my spinal surgeries I have had 9/10 pain after walking for only 10 to 15 minutes, it’s excruciating. I had L2 L3 L4 L5 S1 , cage, fusion, and planter fasciitis removal, both foot drop, burning, radiating pain. I always thought the foot problem was separate and only researched the foot but not coming from the spine surgeries. The spinal surgeries failed. What is your advice? Who should I go to to discover this drop 🦶 the spinal surgeon, the foot specialist wants me to wear a brace

Foot drop sounds like what happens when my legs are asleep after sitting or sleeping in some position impairing circulation. For a few seconds my feet drag. Had this more when younger. Also why is it assumed when there’s a nerve problem it always would be in the location of the exiting nerve in the spine? Because they have progressive surgeries available all leading to spine fusion, that every doctor says they’d rather not do at any cost?
Peripheral neuropathy is a cause of foot drop.
15:19 that disc on the axial looks not to be herniated, you can see the nucleus being regular. Looks more like hypertrophy of the posterior longitudinal ligament
18:09 now it looks like a subdural hematoma
23:08 on the axial, whatever it is seems to be inside the dura mater, so probably hematoma.

  • @peteschreiber9517
    @peteschreiber9517 2 года назад +1

My MRI is almost identical to this man. My foot drop is left foot. I have severe 0/5 left foot drop. I had the surgery 3 weeks ago after waiting a month. L3/4 L4/5 Laminectomy, facetectomy, foraminotomy, with L3/4 diskectomy with Neurolysis of L3/4 nerve roots, and also have very little to none gastroc muscle push off, just like you, I can't calf raise on left at all. That would be the L5/S1. My surgeon did just as you recommended to this man, a good clean up. No fusion, no disk implant. Do you know if this man ever got movement back in his foot to dorsiflex? I'm hoping I get mine back, but so far nothing. Do you know how long the nerves take to heal? Also do you know if you need a functioning gastroc muscle to allow the muscles in front of leg to lift the foot. From what I read, when you dorsiflex the foot the gastroc muscle has to relax and vise-versa. If gastroc muscle is tight it will actually force foot to be pulled down in the front, further inhibiting dorsiflexion. I was planning on sending you my MRI's for other spine problems I have been having for many years before this happened to me. I had whole spine MRI's a year ago and when my foot dropped I had to get another MRI. All of the new stuff happened without any trauma. Was decorating the tree and got some pain in back, next day foot dropped. I had bad back surgery 28 years ago on L4/5 and was never the same. Sorry for the rant Doctor. I enjoy watching your channel. Thanks.

My situation sounds identical to yours. Neurosurgeon did a remarkable job in repairing the damaged discs, and my back feels great! Unfortunately the nerve didn’t grow all the way back to my big toe, hence foot drop. My leg is numb from my calf to my big toe, left leg. Went thru rehab, no help. It’s been 8 years with no improvement. Now permanent drop foot. I wear a brace from Ossur called toe/foot up. Got it from Amazon but Walmart also carries it.

Cool down geez! When there’s intense pressure thecal sac and stenosis on nerve roots for decades there’s gotta be some adhesions. But how can you be sure whether it’s the stenosis or the AA is giving his symptoms? There’s no freaking way. AA is only suspecting to be causing symptoms when there’s no other pathologies are involved. And for FYI the main and major symptom of AA is unbearable pain in lower back/feet/legs which varies from patient to patient. And he has none of those. So please don’t be a smartass everywhere!
Ps. I have AA and disabled. Got it from a botched fusion and I’m only 27. I may have to take my life someday! There’s no way out of this hell…..

On my left leg, I don't have a knee jerk reflex. This knee is also "a trick knee", it can give away at any time.
Also, I can not do a leg lift on left leg. Getting around is a nightmare. X-ray and the MRI of the spine are normal. Blood work too. All the doctors and specialist are at a loss. I think I have some form of neuropathy. My body is attacking itself. Sad commentary for a country with supposedly the most advanced healthcare in the world.

Hey, Team. I just had an updated Full Spinal MRI completed last week,. It's been a couple years since the last scan of the Cervical Spine which revealed Bilateral Neural Foraminal Stenosis; previous years ago I been diagnosed with Scheuermann's Disease, which is a curved spine wedged vertebrae; Osteophytes; Disc Bulging; Disc Degeneration. Basically, life is endless hell with 24/7 severe back and neck pain; headaches; shoulder pain; leg pain; numb fingers and toes and twitching in feet. The doctors and surgeons here are complete morons. Do you know a place where I can send a copy of my MRI Images, and get a proper diagnosis and a recommended treatment. I am beyond fed up with the lack of treatment here and the major breaches of the Canadian Health Act that is constantly violated. Any advice would be great. Thank you.
