Thanks Dr Tara, your video always super informative and easy to digest. my brother has brainstem bleed in last July, he admitted ICU for 2 weeks, then moved to normal ward for 2 weeks and have been back home nursery and recovery. we get some therapist come to home. his recovery is miracle for us and also dr mentioned the same. His physical all good but he feels his head, hand n legs numbness and tingly sensation which make his hand and legs not so much energy when he stands. he can started to hold spoon and eat by himself. appreciate if you could suggest what's exercise should he do for expedite his recovery. Many thanks for SG/ID❤
I've done most of the exorcise s and found them really good I've movement in my toes and can bend them when I used to try straight an my foot my toes used to curl the opposite way but impatient work together it a star thank u
I have foot drop following lumbar fusion two years ago and have been pursuing a very strenuous exercise program including pool therapy and blood flow restriction workouts on a daily basis. Progress has been slow but steady. Would external nerve stimulation of peroneal nerve promote recovery in any way? Thank you in advance for any advice.
How do you manage foot drop where the patient has been prescribed a brace that prevents ankle flexion? Exercise without the brace and then wear brace for daily living? Great video and some really useful ideas.
Look up step smart brace. This brace allows you to move your ankle. I have drop foot for 2 years now and had the stiff brace. I discovered the step smart brace and it's amazing. You will not be dosappointed.
Thank you, Dr. Tara, for this informative video! I have foot drop due to CMT and your video is very helpful. I try to get a daily long walk (using a walker) but felt that specific exercises for foot drop would be good to add to the routine. Again, thank you.
I have MS and terrible drop foot. I use a walker everywhere I go. I wear shoes with a one inch heel, mostly booties since my ankle is weak. I’ve had Ms since 1997. I’d like to wear tennis shoes, but they “stick” on the ground. I saw something about using duct tape. Can you tell me more? I love your videos
Thank you Dr. Tara, I don't have a floppy foot, however I found all of the exercises useful...for improving balance and retraining my brain for my leftside hemiparesis....
Thanks for the new exercises. I still have weakness in my ankle muscles and it will come in handy. I think it is quite challenging to put on and take off socks while standing, because pulling on socks adds to the imbalance. Have a nice week.
I loved watching the cute little dog doing little doggie things! Good informative video. Will start these exercises and see if I stop dragging my right foot as much
I can do active dorsi flexion while in sitting completely fine (like the second exercise)..i can't do ANY standing exercises - like my affected foot doesn't even lift off the ground..no ankle dorsi flexion at all in standing..why is that? I'm confused. How do i address this issue? Where is the weakness/tightness in standing coming from, as opposed to sitting?
I have nerve damage in my left foot due to L5 S1. Had the surgery to relieve the pain. My left foot dropped only 2 weeks before surgery. The doctor said it would only be a 50/50 change that the foot drop would recover. In addition to the foot drop, I just had a right hip conversion 3 weeks ago. I'm trying to heal from both at the same time. While doing the exercises, you recommended. Should I ware the AFO? Thanks for reading my post.
Hello, Thank you for video and i wanna ask a question. The first movement you show in the video is wrapping with a bandage and then moving the foot up and down. What exactly does this movement do, for example, exercise muscles that are not working or rehabilitate damaged nerves?
This video definitely helped me better understand the root causes of foot drop, thank you. I’m wondering though, could foot drop be the reason for feeling pain in the bottom of the heel especially when waking up in the morning?
I have nerve damage from a back condition and surgery. I have little feeling in my foot and calf. I went to PT for 3 months after surgery. I have gained a lot of muscle strength, but still struggle. These excersizes are something a little different. I am anxious to try them.
i was born with a hip dysplasia when i had my first hip surgery back in 1996 it damaged my peroneal nerve and now i have muscle atrophy and foot drop on my right leg. i hate those white plastic afo. what is your recommendations? also my first dr who did my hip surgery said i might had polio as a kid but that was his theory.
My foot drop was due too being in a induced comma for 4 moths due to covid and I wasn't moved around. I need advice plus I have a brace I want to walk regular and work again
YES! They do wear out after about 18 mos ?? depending on how often you us it. Bought two, one for outside shoes, one for my town shoes. Discovered I needed a heel lift inside off foot for equal balance. They sell them the right size. Did you know they just have come out with a new model, STRAPLESS! Anyhoo, I was lazy and became too dependant on the brace, so I did not continue to exercise my bad foot, now my bad foot has become worse (over the years) than it was right after my stroke.
Dr. Tara do you have suggestions for scoliosis which causes the hip to lift and makes the legs a different length . I'm using the balance exercises that you offer but I'd like to see those legs more even. Is that possible. ?
Wondering if there are any excercises when the tib ant has completely lost innervation? All these assume " weakness" but what about absence? How can we use muscles ans techniques to compensate?
Thanks for this great video 👍. I initially thought my ankle problem was spasticity and probably still is to some degree. What I've noticed is right after I remove my articulating brace, I can passively move my ankle both up and down, past 90 degrees, so my point is, will these exercises work for my situation. Another fun fact, the condition you are describing by standing with your eyes closed and losing balance, in aviation is called spiatial disorientation, it happens when pilots enter in the clouds and can no longer see the horizon they lose the awareness of what's going on with the plane, unless trained to use the instruments
Hey Doc, I keep checking out your dog, he or she, is stealing your scence. You know what they say about walking with aniamals! Now that is cute, I do feel he is a ham😅
My husband has foot drop in both feet due to diabetes, it’s so severe that it’s thrown his balance off and he can’t stand on his toes cause he has absolutely no feeling in his feet. Is there anything you might be able to recommend?

I had my hips replaced 4 yrs ago. Foot drop only happened in the last year.I am waiting for nerve conduction tests. I've been given a sleeping brace to help keep my foot upright in bed.
Have you heard of losing strength in legs due to a UTI? I’m a in home CNA and trying to help my patient stand but starting slow with workouts. Thanks Doc
Hi Melissa, thank you for your question. Side note, I have worked in almost every setting and I have worked with a ton of CNAs. I have so much respect for the grueling work that you all do and that you manage to do it with such care. That said, knowing that you are going to these lengths to find ways to help your patients is so so rare (when you have so many other things that you are responsible for). God has truly blessed you and is using you to bless others. Please keep doing what you do. To answer your question, I can't think of mechanism where a UTI directly causes bil leg weakness, but indirectly, I can see this happening (lack of mobility, confusion etc.) I have also seen people who following a UTI (and maybe some increased time in bed), be extremely fearful of standing so they will not push through their legs when you try and assist them up to standing. Here is a video that might help you to help her regain the confidence to trust her legs ruclips.net/video/Igc4Lynvng4/видео.html I hope this helps!
Thank you Dr. Your kind words mean so much to me . I believe God has definitely put me here in this Field to show his compassion. So I try my best to do that. And special Thanks to you doctor for what you do, God bless.
i hope you see this. i realize what you do is hard work. But not all put effort in their jobs. i have a little sister(49 young) suffered with a brain aneursym followed by two strokes. she is in a rehab right now. every time i go in there, all you see is employees standing around. my sister can't feed herself and have had a nurse already tell me she didn't have time to feed her so she will just feed her through a tube. needless to say i was and still am furious. not only that but she is getting stiffer and stiffer. they are just leaving her to lay there. i feed her when i go in and move her too. but i work and so does her kids so its not enough, they let us down. thank you so much for caring, god bless you

I did away with the sciatica pain with yoga...but my guess is that the nerve/muscles that lifet the foot were damaged/atrophied over years. Following some of your exercises, I'm beginning to be able to move dorsiflex the foot just slightly...but noticed a few days ago that I can flex a lot further...and hold the flex for a few seconds...if I sorta cross my weak left leg and put that foot on my right knee. I really like this because I can move the foot "up" further than if the foot is on the floor or a step, but I can also comfortably feel the muscle flex with my left fingers while providing "active assist" with my right hand. Thanks for the help. I was convinced that this wouldn't be fixable after years of atrophy, but I've made some noticeable progress in a week.

Thanks for talking about difference between foot drop and spasticity, difficult for us to differentiate in MS
Absolutely. This is why I always make sure and explain the different whenever I mention both spasticity and foot drop in a video. :)
