Alright, here we are at last. We starting volume 3. So excited. And interesting facts... The flock of birds that fly in front of the sun after Ruby leaves Summer's grave forms the signature of series creator Monty Oum, who passed away on February 1st, 2015.
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 The reason for "dad" and Zwei just being 2D static figures was because this first scene was an improvised scene that was added at the last min after Monty's death, so they didn't have time to make him into an animated character before the show posted. It wasn't planned, but they wanted to add it because of his death.
This episode always brings a tear to my eye. For those who don't know, this episode was the first to not have the creator of the show (Monty Oum) play Ren due to him tragically passing away between seasons 2 and 3 due to an allergic reaction to medicine while at a hospital. They actually brought his brother (Neith Oum) from Japan and asked him if he would like to carry on his brother's role. The bird's flying at the beginning were actually a tribute to Monty, with their wings against the sun moving in such a way to spell out his name.
Birds with the backdrop of the sun was actually Monty's artistic signature that he did in previous creations, such as Dead Fantasy. So, while yes, it does spell out his name, they just recreated his artistic signature in RWBY.
The shopkeeper is the most based character in the series, Blake is obviously a regular to the point she doesn't even need to speak for him to make what she wants
That was a very accurate comparison connecting this to the Triwizard Tournament. Also the reason Mercury was sniffing that boot was to try to authenticate the quality. Apparently fake leather gives off a unique sent and people would do this all the time to make sure their not being scammed.
For those interested/missed it: Team ABRN(Auburn) 5:14 A(rslan Altan, leader) 5:44 B(olin hori) 4:47 R(eese Chloris) 5:40 N(adir Shiko) 7:04 There’s also the screen with their names.
This is the first season to come out after we lost Monty, the birds that fly into the sun are actually mimicking his signature, showing us that he might be gone but his influence over the show continues. He was a visionary and inspires many in the RWBY community to still create even through hardships. Rooster Teeth made a video titled "Tribute to Monty Oum" after his passing, I highly suggest watching it.
Man the improvements in the animation this volume are noticeable from the very first shots! Look at those colors, look at that environment! The lighting! So, yeah, this volume aired after the loss of Monty, and as I’m sure someone has mentioned, the birds flying into the sun were meant to look like Monty’s signature. On that note, Ren’s voice was taken over by Monty’s brother Neath. He does a really good job, in my opinion. The humor also seems to have gotten an upgrade. I genuinely love this premiere because of it. Blake especially got to be goofy and I love it.
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 The facial animation really got an upgrade. If you notice, their mouths better show natural movement with the words they're speaking. The only issue is that the more the mouth movements match the words spoken, the harder it is for those in Japan to dub it into Japanese. It's like watching a foreign live-action movie with an English dub. The words are a bit off from what is being said. With regular anime that's not CG, the mouth movements aren't so precise, so it's easier to put other words to it. That's one of the biggest differences between drawn anime and CG anime. It's easier for the CG artists to match the visuals to the words, so the VAs can just do their script and the CG artists will take care of making sure things match up. With drawn anime, normally the VAs have to match their words to the visuals, since it takes much longer to draw up the animation. It's much more difficult to get the timing down just right. When the Japanese anime spin-off, RWBY: Ice Queendom, was to be dubbed in English, that's when the RT VAs realized just how difficult it is.
There was an actual reason why Mercury was sniffing those boots, he was checking the quality of the leather in them. Leather has a unique smell and you can easily distinguish it from imitation leather.
At last! Volume 3! Looking forward to this. The story really starts to take shape in this volume. The pairing of Weiss and Yang for the doubles round was a logical choice. Technically they are the two most powerful members of the team.
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 This will be a great volume. It's pretty much regarded as the best volume in the series by the fandom. But opinions can vary. Personally I love this volume.
A funfact and a notsofunfact: Starting with this episode, a couple characters were recasted. Mercury is now voiced by Yuri Lowenthal, best known for his voice roles of Sasuke from Naruto, the teenage Ben 10, and PS4 Spider-Man. Ren is now voiced by Neath Oum, Monty's brother who took over the role after his brother passed between volumes 2 and 3.
Welcome to Volume 3. The Vytal Festival Tournament is under way. Can't have an anime-esque show with fight scenes and not have a tournament arc. A word of caution. If you don't have someone moderating your comments, you might want to consider it. This volume tends to get spoiled for people.
And not only is it frequently spoiled, it's often spoiled by people who are clueless to the point that they're spoiling since they think they're being clever with "hints" and in-jokes... This volume has plenty of unexpected twists and they are best experienced totally blind.
Wiess and Yang advancing actually makes the most sense honestly, especially considering how we just saw the level of skill and power they both possess in the previous fight. Yang literally punched three opponents out of the ring at once and her semblance allows her to take serious damage and only grow stronger, and Wiess' glyphs and dust manipulation give her massive utility and control of the battlefield. Compare to Ruby who's not exactly great if she gets disarmed and whose weapon is more geared for taking out large targets and Grimm, and Blake who, whilst skilled, doesn't really have any truly standout abilities or any way to really punch above her weight.
Volume 3 is my favorite one. It keeps the charming visuals of the last two while DRASTICALLY improving the lighting and textures. This is peak RWBY in my opinion.
Since this is the Volume after Monty Oum died, there has been a retcon. The post credit scene at the end of Volume 2 where Yang meets the dark haired woman has been retconned by the rest of the team.
*INTRODUCING* - Summer Rose (The Woodsman (Little Red Riding Hood) + The Last Rose of Summer) *SEMBLANCES* - (UPDATE) Neo's Overactive Imagination (can disguise herself to look like other people; sometimes flashes her actual eye colors) *MY COMMENTS* - As said before, Neath Oum picked up on the voice role of Ren in his late brother's place. This also saw a new voice for Mercury (with Yuri Lowenthal). - Oh yeah, there's actually a reason that Nora was turning grayscale.
Hey late to your reactions. Ruby visiting Summer's grave made me miss my mom a lot 😞 . Reliving this journey makes me miss this show so much too lol Emerald and Neo have to be my top two favorites other than Pyrah AND AO MANY CLIFFHANGERS lol
Hella, so close to meeting my favorite character XD Also, I'm not sure if you've read this yet, There was a tribute scene to the Creator, Monty Oum, on this cliffside as Ruby was walking away from her mother's grave. The sunset and 6 birds are a reference to him (now I'm not sure the origin as how that had become Monty's logo, but i really wish i knew)
Remember to watch Penny's movements this season and you'll see how she's acting more organically human, where in the previous seasons she acted more like a puppet. It's just a really nice subtle hint at how much she has grown.
So glad you are on volume 3! The tournament is so cool! Amity colosseum is awesome, and I love how they showcase a bunch of new characters and fighting abilities.
So as you might be fully aware, this is the first volume of RWBY released after Monty Oum's passing. Even the opening scene of this episode was a dedication to him. So as a possible reaction suggestion, im linking you the official tribute video Rooster Teeth made for Monty. its only a few minutes long but it gives you a great insight on who he was. ruclips.net/video/_465XaHoiGs/видео.html
Ah, Volume 3. The most RWBY that RWBY has ever been, if that statement makes sense. There is so much this Volume does splendidly, and it's a spectacle the entire way through. The twists and turns that this iteration of the story has to offer are nothing less than groundbreaking and instrumental to the future of the series going forward. I'm REALLY looking forward to the rest of these reactions!

Guys, I won't add to what has been said about what's to come in volume 3. Just that the ride from here will be a rollercoaster on many levels. Keep on taking in everything as you go. One more thing..... While some in the FNDM (aka the RWBYVERSE!) believe the series went south after Monty's tragic passing, I do disagree. Much of this volume and after it was still made based on Monty's playbook by those helped make the show from it's start. Welcome to Volume 3! As you can see, we’re off to a great start. A touching moment with Ruby. A signature in the sky. And Amity Tournament 101. Awesome stuff! Now, as you might have heard, this is the volume that makes or breaks most viewers. I’ll do my best to avoid spoilers, but I have one piece of advice as time goes on: Brace Yourself.

No spoilers, but after this season you will be truly into the story, out of the intro. Watch for mid credits scene, especially in the last ep of the season.
So you finally started volume 3. Hope you are in for some surprises until you reach the end. And once you do, you shall finally become a true RWBY fan and become one of us. Also.... RIP Monty Oum. That shot of the sun with the birds is a perfect tribute to him.
Man, y’all’s reactions constantly impress me with the comparisons you draw and how much you pick up on. I watch your reactions volume by volume so now that you've put out episode 12, I can watch your v3 reactions. After the travesty of writing that is v8, my love for RWBY has been severely diminished and I haven't even watched any of v9 yet, but it's nice watching back over v3 with you, when the show was still good.
