    If you aren't making a ton of money as a voice artist you have missed your calling. God gave you a gift there. After you tighten the springs, before you tighten the set screws, you are supposed to give the winding rod a little whack outboard to just separate the coils from each other a touch. Then tighten the set screws. Then oil the heck out of the springs.

    FYI you always start reassemble on the left. Because the left drum will move backwards when you tighten the set screws. Causing slack in your cable The right side will move forwards, tightening the cable. You can either take the strut off, or cut your bars shorter. Like your humor but drove me nuts watching you do it the way you did. Spot on in your explanation of the springs.

    The following is JMO, YMMV:
    1:40 That's actually a bearing(or bushing, if you like, as you commented later). The plastic one works fine. I tend to get the metal ball bearing one, because, why not?
    2:50 I put tape on the bars to measure depth. Then you have visual indicator that the bar is fully seated.
    3:30 For a modest upcharge, they make hex bars that won't roll. 😁
    4:10 He's talking about staying to one side to be out of the line of fire of the winding bar, or the cone if it explodes. I pick the spring side because the only way anything can fly out of the spring is if it breaks simultaneously at two points in the same coil, and I never heard of that happening.
    4:50 There is always the "cowboy" approach of just yanking the bar out, but it is not recommended. 🤠😮
    It's mostly done by young males with 10 fingers, 2 eyes and most of their teeth yet. They stop doing it after they lose one or more of those items. 😉
    6:10 That's what happens if you over tighten those screws.
    8:55 Always replace springs in sets.
    15:20 After you have the winds done, you should stretch the spring by one coil width. This will stop rubbing during operation.

    like most home projects, replacing a torsion spring could be dangerous, if u get sloppy or aren't able to exert a bit of force while on a ladder. that said, i'm nearly 60 years old and just did mine w/o any problems. the bigger issue was opening the garage door w/o the help of the spring so i could get my car out while waiting on the new spring to arrive. those garage doors, the good ones, are quite heavy. it really makes u respect just how much these springs help.

    Great video and love the voice and humor! Only thing I would add is DO NOT over tighten the screws on the torsion spring. BEWARE, if you over tighten and the screws go too deep into the pole, the spring will not keep the tension. If you made this mistake, you can get a second chance by unwinding the spring, wind it up again but screw into the opposite side of the pole and not over tighten.

    • @tomhernandez1308
      @tomhernandez1308 9 месяцев назад

      I'm sorry, this didn't take sense. Can you restate? Are you saying that if screws dig too deeply into the pole then they will let the winding slip?? Is it because the pole area distorts too?

    @3:30 (round things sitting on flat surfaces roll away) Put a 2" long piece of electrical tape around the middle of the rod (making a little tab on the side where the two ends of tape meet) will stop them from misbehaving.

    Great video! SAFETY CANNOT BE IGNORED! 50years ago a major appliance student friend was doing odd jobs to make a little extra money, he released the set screws on a good spring and tore his knuckles up like he had just done battle with Jaws! Fortunately no facial injuries. BE SURE WINDING RODS ARE FULLY SEATED --- you can mark the end of each rod with a felt pen or electrical tape showing the depth the rod has to go in to be fully seated. PAY ATTENTION ON EACH 1/4 turn. FOCUS, DON'T BE DISTRACTED and good luck

    • @MervsServiceSecrets
      @MervsServiceSecrets  9 месяцев назад +1

      Yes, the danger of this should not be underestimated! Thank you for that true life story. Your friend's injuries could have been far worse. He was lucky! In fact, what inspired me to make the video was that I had seen tutorials where they made it seem easy. Tra - la - la, they wound up the spring at top speed like they were in a race. You notice I moved VERY slowly and deliberately like I was dealing with a ticking timebomb, because with every additional turn, the tension increases to the point where you basically are! And with that in mind, you are so right about the importance of focusing and paying attention.

    After attempting to tighten mine, I encountered the same clearance problem with the roof vs. top of door, making it hairy to swap winding rods, with the next one Almost not being seated completely....putting one into loosing a hand territory. Yikes!
    But I recall the axle wants to rise toward the ceiling when tightening, so maybe a weight attached at the slack part of the axle would counter the rising tendency and help with clearance...? Will see next attempt, as I need to just swap out both springs. Hmmmm....
    Thanks much for the useful tips!

      Yikes is right! Be careful with such an operation. People don't realize how dangerous this can be.

      Agreed, thanks.
      My update is the un-tensioning is completed safely, via being slow and systematic.
      Hanging a 5 gallon bucket of weight from the axle via rope did actually help counteract the axle's flex that was contributing to the clearance problem at the ceiling.
      Noteworthy also is: my winding rods (from Amazon) are too loose fitting; I think a layer or two of tape would keep the winding rods tighter and closer to the workable 90 degrees.
      When in doubt, people, pay a professional and be safe.
